    “An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity, a physicist tries to make it simple, for an idiot anything the more complicated it is the more he will admire it, if you make something so clusterfucked he can't understand it he's gonna think you're a god cause you made it so complicated nobody can understand it. That's how they write journals in Academics, they try to make it so complicated people think you're a genius”

      He's partly right. Part of the breakdown in science communication is due to a MASSIVE ego issue in academia. They can't even keep it in check around their colleagues, let alone people they see as outside of the field and effectively below them.
      They're more of a curse than a blessing, because they're poisoning the well for future generations who have ZERO CLUE what's happening inside of their fields, never knowing if they'd have interest, never knowing what advance is being made unless they go through obtrusive amounts of effort just to start. They could be amazing researchers now, *but they won't be forever.* I dread to think how much new blood takes one look at the closeminded idiocy and got turned off of a field they were born for.

    • @jtnachos16
      @jtnachos16 หลายเดือนก่อน +153

      @@LordComradeAnarchoCapitalus Except neither tolkien nor lovecraft are all that complex, as far as storytelling.
      Tolkein's storys boil down to a rather typical 'good vs evil' heroic, and Lovecraft's work lives behind the 'don't tell them, it'll kill the magic' curtain.Quite literally, lLvecraft's works live off the 'fear of the unknown' and the simple fact that people will creep themselves out far more than anything the writer could come up with. This makes them necessarily simple, as they have to be left open to nonconclusive interpretation.
      Even when it comes to worldbuilding stuff, SO MUCH of Tolkein's world is a marriage of stuff lifted from various prior civilizations that lived on/around the british isle.
      Complexity is not bad, what is bad is complexity for it's own sake, and THAT is what people tend to do in academia, is pointlessly overcomplicate things with the SPECIFIC intent of people not being able to understand it. Which is what Terry was referring to, and was entirely correct about.
      Being nuts doesn't make you inherently incorrect, especially when the stuff in question came from before you fell off the wagon.

      @@Pookanet Because his whole idea was that it was given to him by God and that it should be created as if the commodore 64 is the hottest piece of tech.
      Hence zero networking. 16 bit color, etc.
      This is why I'm probably the only IT person who never gave too much of a crap about TEMPLEOS. It's cool one guy wrote an entire OS but the OS he wrote is the equivalent of an OS written in like 1975 (probably coinciding with his mental illness somehow) so it's just less than useless by modern standards.
      His life is a sad story as well and what's even sadder is I know one or two people who were like Terry who never had that successful period in their life that he did. So just a sad life with lots of failure and spiraling mental illness with no peaks at all. Sad stuff.
      But yeah the reason it's so antithetical is because his OS is supposed to be so simple you can run it on like 128mb of ram. That might be useful if it had a network stack. It also has some absolutely insane stuff like a button that generates random "biblical" whatever's. Just a page random words from the Bible in a random string . Not exactly genius programming on that end.

      @@mcnamaraky You're incredibly up your own butt if you think anything limited is less than useless. I'm not gonna pretend anyone or myself is daily driving TempleOS but it's literally easier to use to write text and to code simple 2D graphics in than almost any OS or software suite made since the C64 lol. I dislike that you look down on mental illness and Terry's OS because you look at it like a malformed child product of said illness, and you grasp at reasons to diminish it. It's literally more usable than an old version of Windows 7 on laptops over a decade old that get so slow they're unusable, but sure, if your idea of usability in computing is going on Discord or posting on reddit as opposed to idk, crunching numbers, writing text, doing actual work, then yeah, I guess it's useless lol. As useless as most of your time spent on your modern machine I'm sure.

      In a way I'm sure part of him wanted that too. Beside the declared purpose of the OS he always wanted others to download it to use his compiler + HolyC from a completely technical POV. I believe he's even on record as saying that he wanted to make computers fun again like in the commodore days he grew up in. He wanted to get rid of much of the abstraction that existed in modern operating systems and go back to the basics of much closer interaction with hardware. In that way such an os is a great and these days rare sandbox to experiment with.

    In the documentary (I think it qualifies as one) about TempleOS made by Frederick Knudsen, you can see some footage of Terry recorded by himself in which he's arguing with his father until he suddenly realizes what he's doing and apologizes. Like a sudden moment of clarity.

      There are footages of him battling his delusions. Not necesarry clarity, just logically figuring out that something is not right and that he is not seeing reality for what it is. Obviously he had theories that might not have matched reality perfectly but that's just the proccess of learning and researching.
      It's a shame what happened to him. He is a legend now for achieving so much despite his mental illness. Had he not have it or had he recieved actual help for it, things could have been so much better. Not just for him, but the amount he could have given to the world with his knowledge and intellect is painful to think of.

    What's kind of funny is that TempleOS isn't actually a terrible wrapper to make games in with a certain aesthetic that just boots straight into the game on boot. Think how Windows CE worked on Dreamcast, it acted as a wrapper where the developers used the Windows CE SDK and libraries and was included on the disc to boot into that then ran the game. I messed around with it myself, as a wrapper for a game that would run inside a QEMU VM on boot using a Rock5 SBC. I never went as far as make an engine like the one here, but I did get to a point where an extremely stripped down Linux OS that then booted a TempleOS based wrapper into the game happened in seconds.

His project which he often tested in a vm got me to try making some UEFI bootable code which I successfully tested on a qemu VM with ovmf. Eventually I might try expanding it but doing anything that interfaces with any sort of hardware is a lot of work.

    • @lasskinn474
      @lasskinn474 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      we used linux a lot only in textmodes in mid 90s (locally, not remoting in). for various reasons, like being able to transfer files and do stuff while playing music at the same time and such, you kinda didn't want a gui for something if you didn't need it if you had 12 megs of ram or something. way superior to doing same things in dos and in dos you needed something like desqview for multitasking and it was a super hassle, while in linux you had multiple consoles you could just switch between with a simple key combination.

    • @therealjammit
      @therealjammit หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lasskinn474 Same here. The GUI stuff didn't really happen until much later. Some programs had a text GUI interface, but was only a pretty add on to the command line. Hardware and software limitations breed creativity. That's why, for example, when a group of people in the mid to late 80s working on a game for the NES had to work with very limited hardware and also limited programming hardware. You had to do stuff with what you have. When things break, often then not, they had to find workarounds. Nowadays, the Switch is the closest equivalent: limited CPU/GPU performance paired with limited memory and user available storage. So, you have to make the game work and make it presentable. Companies making very hard to run games on Switch (Doom 2016 as an example) really shows their ingenuity to workaround the limitations of the system. So, having a full 3D engine built in such a barebones OS is just incredible and I 100% agree with Muta on that!
