One thing i like about this demonstration. It isnt focused on the "acrobatic" side of Choy Lee Fut, its the practical moves that you will learn in the first couple months. I think CLF is a great style, I'm interested in learning it someday..
Choy Lee Fut has a tradition deeply rooted within the martial arts of the Shoalin Temple. Chan Heung, our founder, spent 20 years learning his art from his three mentors: Chan Yeun Wu, Lee Yau Shan and monk Choy Fook, before combining his knowledge into one effective and comprehensive system. Chan Heung called it Choy Lee Fut to commemorate his teachers and the Buddhist origin of the art (Fut means Buddha in Cantonese).
"Choy Li Fut is the most effective system that I've seen for fighting more than one person. It is one of the most difficult styles to attack and defend against. Choy Li Fut is the only style [of kung fu] that traveled to Thailand to fight the Thai boxers and hadn't lost." -Bruce Lee
one thing about choy li fut is that it is very adaptable. It also got the short and straight punches of wc that can be as direct. You must take it from a good master to understand.
awesome, i am VERY interested in taking clf but i was wondering if someone could tell me what the main differences between hung sing and buk sing are ?
very greate video. It looks like, that you train your kung fu (like only a very few persons (like my association)) to apply it. But I am always confused when i watch kung fu applications. Why nobody uses the techniques of the basic stances "ma bo" and so on for what they were invented? Joint locks to the knee and so on??
@LordShandor And what style do you practise? Like I said i've done Judo, Karate, and i didn't really feel the need to say it but Boxing as well. Of the four i have experiences of Choy lee fut is the most well rounded, efficient and effective that i have studied.
sorry, for the delay..it's a singaporean mixed martial art of 4 styles: tae kwon do,choy lee fut, sanda & shito ryu karate founded by grand master leong..unfortunately is only been teaching here in greece where we have a greek federation..u can find plenty of videos on youtube but i don't think it will give u a complete picture of this martial art..last time i heard it was taught in canadian police..
yes yes..i think the bigger thing I was seeing was "round" technique vs shorter "curved" technique..but as CLFDevil explained, it's just a demo and the techniques aren't normally so wide. Either way I think it's pretty cool!
The reason these CLF doesnt work in the octagon is because of the rules being set up for MMA. CLF is never used in competition unless its for performance of forms. Choy li fut strikes arent just with the first 2 knuckles but with any edge you can create with your hands. Back of the wrist back of knucles 2nd row of knuckles(ones that bend fingers in half), back of fist even finger tips. BJJ throws a wrench in standup and fight ends up on ground. If you learn CLF I would also learn BJJ to compete
CLF also combines the powerful kicking techniques and long range attacks of Northern Shaolin styles with the stances and hand techniques of the southern styles like Hung Gar. It does have the eight directions of attack from Ba Gua, but I don't know what similarity it has to Wing Chun other than the use of the wooden dummy.
Choy Li Fut has many hand techniques and in-fighting similar to Hung Gar from the five animal systems from Southern Shaolin, but CLF also has footwork, kicking techniques, and long range techniques from the Northern Shaolin systems.
I agree, thinking of physical sciences. The thing you are not thinking about is many of these curved punches are this way so that you can block and hit at the same time. My Sifu teaches Hung Gar and Choy Li Fut and they compliment each other very well.
clf has a few different lineages. as zharpf said, one style is chan family. One style is hong sing. The style i practice is buk sing. I realise it isnt hung gar now (woops lol).
I watched this style of CMA practiced and performed beautifully at the Legends of Kung Fu World Tournament this past weekend and I was so impressed by it. It was a young woman named Candy who was displaying this style so beautifully in "True to Form Sparring" and she did so very well. I was fascinated so I looked it up. It's obviously very effective seeing as she won I believe either 1st or 2nd.
Well, Sifu Thomas....it's been a long time since I've seen your amazing work. How I miss working with you. Are you still teaching? I wish you nothing but wonderful things in your future. Namaste, Toree
just wanted to say thanks. It was great! dont listen to those who dont believe in the traditional methods, they say that because they cant do it themselves. but yeh i wanted to ask how can i practice the spinning backfist, the one you go into a cross stance. because i fiond myself of balance or hip motion not far enough to land the hit.
@TheNorthernWolf117 shao chao (spelling?) is where judo comes from so you see pairing traditional kung fu with anything else is redundant because the techniques of judo are already found in kung fu systems. I understand what I think you are trying to say and you may be referring to modern day wushu, which I agree has no martial application. as for real deal traditional kung fu(san da, wing chun, long fist etc.), that stuff is deadly.
I think this style would make an excellent base system. All the relaxed strikes and full rotations of the bodie make well for complimenting other styles but if you cannot follow your roots you might have a miss match mess of unorganized chaos not good for the practecioner. I definatly think this is a good style there lots of potential in this art
I agree Choy Li Fut is a great style of kung fu and i would like to train more in the style but in my opinion wing chun is the most straight forward and realistic kung fu style i have seen and trained in. But this is a great demo.
Demasiado bueno, de verdad que este es uno de los artes marciales más efectivos que hay. Excelente video, hasta ahora puedo ver una demostración tan buena de este arte.
@TheNorthernWolf117 My suggestion would be just to train really hard. Study the programs used by top-level full-contact fighters and adapt them to your kung fu (or whatever style you're using). And don't neglect shuai jiao and chin na training - it'll teach you grappling. Do lots of training geared towards full-contact sparring. Learn the self-defense non-sport aspects too, but realize most of that can be learned without much training. What style are you learning?
I agree with you 100%. WHy does everyone over look that point except those that actually get out there and do it and train those different arts. they find it's the individual NOT the system..
Now that's Kung-Fu(WuShu Arts) and that man is a highly skilled and gifted practitioner! Amazingly precise and intelligently crafted maneovers. My first time witnessing the art of Choy Li Fut.
@YoungCrs is a boxer willing to fight someone who kicks to the groin and knees, elbows, backhands, forearm strikes, tears the eyes and face, and punches to the neck?
@timoxe In a kwoon or dojo maybe, but back in the day you'll pick up a sword or spear and stick with it. This is the case in China, Africa, ancient Greece or Rome. The reliance on fighting was definitely in weapons.
@TheRockSonico No todos son chantas(aunque sean muchos los que lo son). El Choy Li Fat es un arte marcial respetable. No discuto que te guste o no. Los deportes son respetables. A mi me gusta esto y me ha servido.
Hi, I am interested to see full contact competition videos. Would you be kind enough to share them with me? For private use only. Will never repost without permission.
@qwertyuiop298 If you want more information on it there are plenty of great videos on youtube and some pretty decent websites found if you enter Choy lee fut on google. This style has everything you could want in it: Kicks, punches, sweeps, groundwork, submissions, locks; you name it and its there. I might sound biased but I have just been blown away by the Choy lee fut system! Another point I should add is that I have a friends who practises jiujitsu... he's leaving it to join CLF.

this video will become a classic of choy lee fut on you tube, it's so great!

Very cool video. Good Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu drills. Very entertaining.
I train Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut and I thought the video was awesome. Good Job.
one thing about choy li fut is that it is very adaptable. It also got the short and straight punches of wc that can be as direct. You must take it from a good master to understand.

Fuide, free, power and the movement of the human body is elegant and superb
@ucfknight315 He's Sifu Thomas Country Master from the Chan Family CLF branch. He teaches in San Diego
This is one of the best demos I have seen for this style of kung fu very powerful moves.
@LordShandor And what style do you practise? Like I said i've done Judo, Karate, and i didn't really feel the need to say it but Boxing as well. Of the four i have experiences of Choy lee fut is the most well rounded, efficient and effective that i have studied.
I imagine so, I train with Sifu and Simo Willcott, who are students of GM Wong and they often talk about Sifu Wong's ability in the ring.
Very good demo
who is the CLF expert giving this demonstration and where does he teach?
sorry, for the delay..it's a singaporean mixed martial art of 4 styles: tae kwon do,choy lee fut, sanda & shito ryu karate founded by grand master leong..unfortunately is only been teaching here in greece where we have a greek federation..u can find plenty of videos on youtube but i don't think it will give u a complete picture of this martial art..last time i heard it was taught in canadian police..
i belive that this style could work in real life because take a close look its actually not complicated , its all about practice speed and confident.
@TheRockSonico No creo que vaya a usar una guardia tan abierta en una pelea real. Debe hacerlo de esa manera para que pueda apreciarse de dónde proviene la fuerza de cada golpe circular en el video.

thank you. it 's possible to send me this video. thanks
yes yes..i think the bigger thing I was seeing was "round" technique vs shorter "curved" technique..but as CLFDevil explained, it's just a demo and the techniques aren't normally so wide. Either way I think it's pretty cool!
Hmmm... still the best video on the internet... bar none...

@choyleefutsd how long have you been training for? awesome vid by the way :)
@aaron1719 Awesome dude, stick with it, it really pays off! Are you Hung Sing or Buk sing? Either way its all good :)
CLF also combines the powerful kicking techniques and long range attacks of Northern Shaolin styles with the stances and hand techniques of the southern styles like Hung Gar. It does have the eight directions of attack from Ba Gua, but I don't know what similarity it has to Wing Chun other than the use of the wooden dummy.
awesome technique!!
..why such round movements though? I'm just wondering, I don't know much about the style
Choy Li Fut has many hand techniques and in-fighting similar to Hung Gar from the five animal systems from Southern Shaolin, but CLF also has footwork, kicking techniques, and long range techniques from the Northern Shaolin systems.

got it !! we are going to be filming more in about a month to demonstrate such things. appreciate the feedback .
really useful view of moves. good vid. nice repeats of sequence. do more. slo mo.
Hung gar distance (hand/legs) seems to be shorters (but still longer than Wingchun), those they are all Southern Kungfu.
That was awesome, I love How in Fut you can kick someone's butt with such beauty ^.^
clf has a few different lineages. as zharpf said, one style is chan family. One style is hong sing. The style i practice is buk sing.
I realise it isnt hung gar now (woops lol).

@j6cb Yeah man. Ive been taking CLF for 2 weeks now. Our instructor pushes us really hard. Its great stuff
Thank you Sifu Thomas for the Montreal seminar!!

Nice , the most dynamic fighting arts of Shaolin Kung Fu Choy Lee Fat .
very very nice..........
@YoungCrs is a boxer willing to fight someone who kicks to the groin and knees, elbows, backhands, forearm strikes, tears the eyes and face, and punches to the neck?
@elchacal31 Choy Li Fut is a mix of 3 Southern Kung Fu styles, Fut Gar, Li Gar, and Choy Gar.
if you do a search for choy lee fut australia in google the school comes up first, please write personally for more info should you require it. thanks
I can clearly see passionate people here, keep it up guys ;)
You are absolutely right, Turtle.
@timoxe In a kwoon or dojo maybe, but back in the day you'll pick up a sword or spear and stick with it. This is the case in China, Africa, ancient Greece or Rome. The reliance on fighting was definitely in weapons.
passionate with power, precision. beautifully done!
I like this style! great video
