  • HISTORIC VIDEO from April 30, 1997 - Friends get together to watch what was a very big event at the time - Ellen's coming out on ABC-TV. Her show was preceded by a rotten interview with idiot Diane Sawyer, but we all had a great time anyway. Thanks, Ellen!
    I was inspired to post these old home videos of mine after seeing the similar TH-cam videos recorded by Nelson Sullivan.

      Is Diane Sawyer anti LGBTQ or do you think she was asking questions that the uneducated world would want to know back in 1997 ? To be honest I was really thrown off by her question about "kids trying it" like being gay is drugs or something . That type of question would probably not be asked now a days thank God . Any how I love these videos . ❤🏳️‍🌈

      As someone who wasnt alive then, if she already announced was the show was about then isn't it less of a surprise? What had happened before the show aired?

      @@cameronharrington6813 Yes, the announcement itself was no surprise but everyone wanted to see how it would happen, what the reaction would be and experience it together as a group. It was a Very Big Deal at the time.

      @@captainknapton A lot of reporters get hassled because they asked "stupid" questions when in reality they are asking for the audience who may not know the answer. A good example of this is Keith Morrison's decades-old interview with Titanic Survivor Eva Hart. Barbara Walters always had a way of avoiding this by saying, "what do you think if some people might say...." and then asked the question. Diane just seems judgemental, though.

      I am wondering if it is because it's Iowa ? Or because it is a University town ? Maybe most are connected to the University ? That many gays and lesbians coming together across different age groups putting differences aside and focusing on what connects them for the greater good seems rare . My area seems to have too many cliques and focuses on division . Everyone in the video seems to get along and is pleasant to each other . None of the division that seems to be prevalent in other areas . Nice to see . Wish I had similar in my late teens ( 18 , 19 ) and early 20's and even now . As soon as I graduated high school I should have moved away to a different area . This group of friends during that time period seems rare . I wonder what ties or organizations brought them together ? Word of mouth ? Organizations on campus ? Nice to see .

It has nothing to do with what time period we’re in and all to do with whether or not a party sucks. If I’m bored at a party, the company is boring, I’m either leaving or distracting myself from the mess, if a party is lively and the company is accepting and fun then why would I be on my phone. Older people seem to have made this idea that all young people do is go on their phones, and yet I look at the older people in my town, around the world and all they can seem to do with their time is complain on Facebook all day.

    Wow. I grew up gay in Iowa in the 80s and 90s and didn’t realize people gathered like this then. Dumb, I know, but I was just a kid-and lonely.
    It’s heartwarming to know you all had each other.

    This whole account is the most incredible time capsule! It's so interesting to see life in a time that I didn't live through (being 18 years old). Seeing the reactions and excitement reminds me how only recently LGBT people were fearful of coming out, I feel so grateful to live in a time and a city that is so accepting.

    • @alan-light
      @alan-light  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Well, there are a lot of people at the party and I only knew about a dozen people there. I can't give an update on the people I didn't know, but I can say that the blonde woman sitting on the couch, in black, wearing glasses, at 7:51 (also seen in the thumbnail photo) later passed away of cancer. Also, at 2:02, my friend Shawn (dressed in the plaid shirt with t-shirt underneath) passed away in 2014 of undisclosed causes.

    I'm not even gay and I cried a little watching this. Seeing how you guys cheered when Elen said was gay, laughed and then cheered again when she was hugged. That was such a symbolical moment, showing mainstream you could "embrace" and accept gay people and there was nothing wrong about it. I know it sparked hope in every little heart.
    And the world progressed a lot since then, but at the same time, it is also stuck and even going backwards in a lot of questions. Unfortunate, but it means that we all just need to keep fighting for progress, to social topics, and vote for those who will seek these things and improve society and not the ones who want to go back to the dark ages so they can spread their prejudice.
