Broken Age is a cute point and click adventure game that takes place in what appears to be different worlds that soon collide. The stories of Shay and Vella are actually two different viewpoints of the same problem. They are completely unaware of the other side’s issues until they are forced to live in each other’s worlds.
Shay grows up in what he thinks to be a space ship, with the mission of finding a new planet because his home world is dying. He is manipulated and used his entire life in order to fulfill the goal of the Thrush, the overlords of the land he comes from. His heroic spirit is tricked into kidnapping young girls so that they can be used to genetically enhance the Thrush.
[A boy outside of our culture blah blah quote]
From Shay’s point of view, he is a hero. Because everything he has ever learned has taught him that. The little pixels on the screen are really nothing more than helpless creatures. There is nothing more to them. That is all he knows about them. Why would he ever question that?
In my personal opinion, I feel like this is a metaphor for people who are born into the upper class, or class of people who are in power. Much like in Imperial England, where the English thought they were helping the countries that they brutally took over. They saw the countries they concurred as needing help, when in reality they were being hurt.
This can also be applied to how in stories, the male protagonist is often forced into a role where he must save a damsel in distress. Many times the damsel is not much more than being saved. This metaphor is quote literal, as shay is actually saving damsels in what looks like a video game console. It is very clear what this is a metaphor for.

Awesome analysis! The game definitely explores a lot of feminist and postcolonial themes in some really clever ways. There also seems to be a lot of commentary on organized religion. The religious beliefs held by characters in the game turn out to be the result of misunderstandings in the case of the Dead-Eye God and outright fraud in the case of Harm'ny. The "blind faith" of the Druids ended up being a front they were both putting on in order to gain each other's acceptance. After realizing that they didn't need religion to be happy and that they just needed each other, they became free to pursue their other goals and dreams.
There was also some discussion in the Double Fine forums about whether or not there's a narrative explanation for how Shay and Vella are able to solve problems with information that the player learns from the other character's story. The Thrush claim that they are interested in Shay because of his "instincts" and Vella because of her "spirit," and those may actually be metaphors for the player themselves. If that's the case, then the "missing piece" that the Thrush need to "true the formula" may actually be the player's own agency, which a super weird and meta idea.
Sorry, I'm rambling more that I thought I would... :p

Well here is the general themes I got out of both acts:
Act 1-Breaking new ground, and broadening your horizons
Act 2-Always push for change, no matter how difficult that may be, and try to see things from a different perspective

I don't agree with the heterosexual marriage symbolism, I think the message is more against traditionalism within any institution and how people should be evaluating tradition to see if they still hold merit in today's society. That applies to marriage, of course, I just believe the message goes further.

Stacy's input was great, it was nice to get a view from different perspectives as the message of the game applies to so many different parts of society. As always a really thoughtful and enjoyable analysis, thanks

It's a fair reading, but I think you spent too long talking about the philosophy of subverting gender roles, and probably could've spent longer citing evidence from the game's story itself. Not that I think this philosophy shouldn't be talked about, but the point of the video is to examine the game rather than simply talk about the philosophy.

    • @GeekRemix
      @GeekRemix  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

***** I don't think we could have used more evidence. Considering the entire video is citations to show evidence. Half the video is footage of evidence. I can't think of a way to show even more evidence. Unless of course you simply disagree and then used your bias to dismiss the 5-7 pieces of evidence that was put in the video.

I think your interpretation is right in the way with the colony.
I think you could even go a step further, and say: Shay is a man from e.g. california and Vella is a girl from china.
silicon valley is making chinese girls work at foxconn very hard and some will die. despite that, some people are considering it as a great honor to manufacture apple products. california has technology for everything (internet of things trend, even speaking spoons) and many of it's inhabitants are becoming lazy and do not hustle anymore. in china, you have to hustle hard to survive. those hard working people are the thing that is missing in america. this is the "genetics" that the lazy people are missing. and not only the genetics but also the psyche.

That was a great analysis. :) After watching this video I couldn't help to think that Mog Chatra somehow resembles what Thomas Hobbes describes as the Leviathan. Both in appearance and what the Leviathan represents. I don't say that the writers had that in mind, but it did remind me of it.

Spirit2004 What did the leviathan represent!?

    • @Spirit2004

I am by no means an expert, I haven't read his entire work and most of my knowledge is based on what my professors said about it, but I'll try to explain. Hobbes claimed that people are willing (he lived in the 17th century) to give up their freedom or at least parts of it, if they believe the that their health (I know, that may seem like a contradiction, considering that it harvests the girls, but the people believe that in doing so they keep their towns and the other people safe) and property are protected by a sovereign entity (may that be a king or state). That sovereign he called Leviathan. The leviathan is a biblical sea monster and some of the illustrations I've seen of it looked similar to Mog Chotra.

I see taking a name as a way of continuing a family legacy. Also when you have multiple children what name will they take. Some traditions aren't very useful, but i rather not have my kids be thought of as bastards or being from different relationships. I wouldn't mind taking my wife's name but i'm sure my family would. Sorry if i'm not politically correct in my opinion but some traditions should be respected for more than ones own pride, isn't that what family is?

i feel like this analysis jumps the gun on alot of things. especially the marriage thing. yeah like i see how you could equate that but that whole situation is not so cookie cutter in explaination. you could apply the same comparisons to religion. how people are sacrificing themselves to this all powerful monster being who people are being convinced is saving them when in reality its all a big hoax, along with shays side where he feels like hes doing a good thing by taking these sacrifices and does not even see them as such because hes so heavily blindfolded, much like a holy man feels when burning a heretic or when performing exorcism.
on another note you take too long explaining things out of passion and you close yourself of from user interpretation by displaying alot of your assumptions as fact.
