  • The final episode of season 1's "How To" series is "How To Set Up a Trout Spey/Switch rod". With the surge in popularity of light two-handed rods for trout fishing, more and more anglers are looking to purchase one of these light, fun and highly enjoyable fishing outfits, but find many pitfalls on the way to getting the perfect rig. In this episode RIO brand manager, Simon Gawesworth, explains how to choose the right sized Trout Spey rod based on fish size, compares a Trout Spey rod to a regular single handed rod, and goes through the various fly line options for Trout Spey rods that are on the market, and when to use each one.
    This film is an invaluable tool for anyone looking at getting a two-handed Trout Spey or Switch rod, and really helps anglers dial in how to get the most perfectly balanced rig.
    RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.
    If you enjoyed season 1 and want to see more, don't fret as season 2 is already shot and will be available on this outlet soon.

      Glad you like that line, "Path" - it's a favorite of every here too!

    Here’s a question. When you talk about the weight. Don’t you want to choose the rod to what type of fly your tossing? A 4 weight won’t toss a heavier fly as good as a 5 or 6? Or are you just regulating that with the line?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS

      The lines certainly regulates this best. You can take a 4wt and put on a very short Skagit type head and throw practically any fly size and weight you want. You could certainly put a different line on a 6wt and find it harder to throw a big fly than the 4wt with the right line choice on. However, with identical lines designs, the heavier rod will cast bigger and heavier flies, but also be overkill for most trout.

    Hi, I am novice in the sport and that is the reason for my stupid question: I have Fenwick Aetos 11'1'' ft 5/6 wt switch rod. Which line could you recommend for heavy indicator rig/streamer fishing? Would it be OK with regular RIO Gold/RIO Fathom 6 wt line or should I go with more heavy lines? Thanks.

      Hey GG, thanks a lot for your comment and question. The RIO Gold and Fathom lines will most certainly NOT be heavy enough to load a switch rod, so avoid those at all costs. If you can find a "Switch Chucker", in the rod size that you have, you will be laughing at how easy this is! It is perfect (and designed) exactly for using on a switch rod and to throw large indicators.

    Great videos Simon but I'm still confused .
    I have a 10'3wt medium action rod that I want to shoot line, roll cast , nymph and dry fly fish with . Is this possible and if so can you recommend what line for me to buy ? Thank you . Ron

      Simon asks if your 10ft, #3 rod is a single handed rod, or a true Switch rod?

    • @dragally1
      @dragally1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a single handed rod that I put a fighting butt ext on . Thank you .

      @@dragally1 In that case, all the RIO two-handed lines would totally overload that rod. For the single handed rod, the best choice would be the InTouch Single Handed Spey line (www.rioproducts.com/products/floating/intouch-single-handed-spey) - probably in the floating density option, and certainly in the WF3 size.

    Can I go fishing with Simon?

    Nice video...so my take from this is that I could use a standard 9' 4 or 5wt. rod to Switch/Roll cast with, but put a 1 or 2 wt. Switch line on it? But this would only be ideal for up to 4# fish? Thanks in advance!
