It's so shocking how quickly it all happened. Most people had no time to get to higher ground from where they were located, and they weren't expecting a tsunami that big. So very sad.
The times quoted are NOT Japanese times re the earthquake and the tsunami aftermath. Japan 2.30pm onwards and earthquake MAIN lasts for about 5mins at scale 9 (Richer) with various aftershock earthquake ripple from 7 to 5 scale that lasted for some hours after. The main tsunami hit the coast etc some 20 to 30 minutes later.. The Japanese coastline SANK by 3 metres.. hence the reason why some so called coastal defences etc failed.
Unfortunately I was there in 2011. I experienced the earthquake first hand and it was damn scary. The tsunami was absolutely horrifying; you could drive a car as fast as it goes and the wave was coming 3 times faster; no way to escape.

That was really smart at the beginning. Getting the boats out as far to sea as possible means survival. As soon as the tsunami approaches the shoreline, the elevated geographical features make the wave grow exponentially. At sea you just roll over a tsunami.
Yup. There's a lotta stories how divers were out and it felt like a whirlpool, but they were able to roll over the wave and didn't think much of it. Needless to say, they were devastated as they approached land. Almost 40% of the tsunami victims were kids, so ...

One reported that he picked up a woman with wet hair who wanted to go to Minamihama, which was then completely washed away. The driver asked “ that place is almost empty, are you sure?” And the woman replied back “am I dead?” before disappearing. Another driver reported that he had picked up a woman who gave her an address, which ended up being a flattened house when they arrived. The driver then asked “are you sure this is the place?” but she had already disappeared
I saw a PBS documentary recently called, "Surviving the Tsunami", and they interviewed the 2 men on the bridge--the one in the green jacket & the one in the light blue. It's a miracle the man in the blue jacket survived. He was caught in his car & managed to get on the roof through a broken window when he approached the bridge. The man in green shouted at him to jump & when the one in blue did, he caught his jacket and pulled him up, saving him. If the guy in green had missed, there was nothing but the sea ahead for the one in blue. They looked so casual talking on bridge; must've been shock.

The voice you hear over the p a system in background is a man that stayed behind and warned people of the sunami coming he did not survive, giving his life to warn others to head for higher ground. Always remember him and his female assistant for warning of the danger they gave their lives to save others.

@@Felix-ls4xn We all live on the same planet as Japan. No place on Earth has complete immunity from natural disasters. This was Japan, but the effects were seen or felt all over the Pacific. I live in the UK. The most we have to worry about is floods. Nothing on this kind of scale. But it doesn't mean it can never happen. It could.
And this was just one city out of hundreds devastated in the same way. The Japanese are extraordinary people. They've rebuilt pretty much everything since. They just roll up their sleeves and get to work.
You are wrong about that. A lot of the places that were hit hard, have never recovered. There have been a few videos of the aftermath, and some places are still in a state of devastation.
And apparently some people "prepared" by going and standing on the harbour wall to watch. I just don't have the words to express just what an insane choice that is.
to me 30 minutes is enough time to get to higher ground if you are near it,eve if you drive away for 30 minutes is better then staying close the the harbor
If I start to feel down or depressed I just need to watch any of these videos of what Northeastern Japan experienced on March 11, 2011. All of the videos that document the Earthquake and Tsunami show that the Japanese people are strong and work together to survive. I can only hope that if I ever experience such an event in my lifetime that my neighbors and friends will be able to display the same qualities of many of the people that I witnessed in these videos. A truly sad day with the loss of over 15,000 people. I pay my heartfelt respect to the relatives and friends and colleagues of those who lost there lives or were injured.
That has got to be the scariest most helpless feeling to be standing there, knowing you're trapped and watching everything around you being obliterated.
That doggo knew something terrible was coming long before it hit hard. We’re almost 12 years after this horrible event. Japan has become stronger than ever in terms of coming together and trudging forward - the walls have been built taller, stronger, the people have rebuilt what they can, salvaged what was necessary, and kept this day as one for remembrance going forward. It’s so heartbreaking to hear what was laughter and comfortable chit chat turning to sheer panic and horror, witnessing their homes, businesses, anything and everything that they knew being washed away in an instant.
Heartbreaking to see the human torture of china people during world war , happy that tsunami is punishing japan till it remember never to repeat the evil.

Man this footage is so devastating. I've never lived where there was hurricanes or tsunami only tornados. To see how a tsunami has such a vast swath of destruction is incredible. With tornadoes the destruction is of equal power but in such a tiny area. Tsunamis just swallow everything in their path in this rapid creep of water that's awful to behold.
I was in the Thailand tsunami and luckily all ma family were safe apart from me and my dad but we stayed together and this old man helped us out 💗 I had cut my leg open so I had to have crutches but luckily my dad hadn't got any serious injuries . we were on Christmas holiday but it turned a lovely holiday into a life changing experience 💞💘💚 RIP those who died I know what its like 😩
Laura Kembery I had an Aunt and family in Tailand. They were planning on going to the beach that day. Since they lived in the center of the country it as a coin toss wether they went to the Northern or Southern beaches that day. That day they went north. That decision probably saved their lives.
This is the scariest video i've ever seen. Just because it is so long, the horror builds up slowly-- the sirens, the barking dog, the background laughter, it foreshadows the devastation to come better than any fictious movie could. Give me chills.
This is horrifying... Even though it may mean nothing, I wish I could express to all the families who lost loved ones how very sorry I am for them... Even 4 years later, my heart goes out to them.
It looks like it comes in so slowly but you only have a few minutes to decide what to do. I can't pretend to imagine what that must have been like. Thank goodness for the alarms. So many more people would've died if not for the warning.
Unfortunately many of us in the West have no real idea about the sheer destructive power that water in great volume has. Back in 1977, as a 16 year old, I witnessed the power of a Typhoon in Hong Kong and saw a 4 storey block of flats side down the side of a hill, whilst bamboo scaffolding poles thicker than a person's thigh were being plucked from the ground and flung about like cocktail sticks. I was living on the 11th floor of a block of flats and we were flooded by the endless deluge! The one curious aspect of that event was seeing all the boat people from the storm shelters heading out to sea like a small armada - they obviously knew how to handle themselves as they returned the day after intact. Ok, so this experience wasn't as traumatic as this dreadful Tsunami and only 2 people lost their lives that year in Hong Kong, but it made a very deep impression on me and taught me a tough lesson about how wild Nature really is. When the alarm sounds - run like hell!
Much respect to the Japanese citizenry for a few reasons. 1. Documenting water's destructive power as it consumed, then razed their town, but refusing to film the death or peril of another person. I have watched many YT video accounts of this disaster and have not witnessd a single occurrance where the death of another person was filmed for spectacle. 2. There were no news accounts of affected survivors rioting or looting in the weeks and months following the disaster. Hat's off to the BOSS man who suddenly appeared on the bridge at 51:20... With dry hair... Wearing dry clothes... Between tsunami wave pulses... He looked around a short while, then calmly swaggered himself up the hill toward the camera.
I've always remembered the "boss man" - as you call him. Calmly inspecting the damage. In my mind I've always imagined he stayed calm of mind no matter what and couldn't wait to get on with the clear up and restoration without fuss.
It is now almost 7 years later as I write this .. it is my hope and prayer that our Japanese brothers and sisters continue to rebuild and put their lives back together, as best they can.
I was in middle school when this happened. And our teacher, who family is from Japan, began crying during one of our lesson while looking at the computer and saying something about having to leave. She didn't show up for about two weeks
I barely remember the feeling of being scared and traumatized by tsunami that hit my country. I feel really bad for people who lost their loved ones. I didn’t even lose anything. I just got scared and that’s it. There were many footage of people just dying on tv when it happened. But now people nearly forget about it when they aren’t reminded. It’s really sad...
I lived in Oregon at the time of this Tsunami. There was large chunks of debris such as wood structures that floated across the Pacific on ocean currents and washed up on the Oregon coast 6 years after the event. Most pieces of the debris washing up on the west coast had what were considered "invasive species" attached to it. Not sure what those were ..maybe some type of live barnacles ?? But seeing this stuff really brought home the reality of what Tsunamis can do. Sobering stuff for sure.
Invasive species are anything from plants to certain animals that aren’t native and could harm native eco systems. For example, if a certain plant showed up in America from another country, it could grow abundant here but in the process take out other plants that were good here. Which would in turn affect what would grow, and eliminate other plants we have here… which would also in turn hurt the animals too because certain animals can’t eat certain plants etc… it can cause a major chain reaction like that. It can be bad enough to where it can affect agriculture. Some plants take in too much water and kill other plants in the process. Those are also considered invasive species. Hopefully that makes sense. If you want an example starlings are a bird that are considered invasive, spotted knapweed is a plant and it’s another example. Also one more thing to note is invasive species can also mean it was native to a state and carried over to another state. So there’s different versions.
Kind of scary to see how the water goes down at first (lowest point at around 13:10), just look at the harbor and the boat, and the at first slowly and then more quickly starts to rise (compare to 17:00)! I really wonder how many of the boats speeding out of the harbor survived. Hard to imagine being in such situation, the danger is impossible to estimated beforehand, it all seems so calm except for the sirenes and the warnings over the speakers - which always gives me goose bumps. Can't believe how calm the people around the camera stay - and how people did not immediatly seek safety when they saw the water rise again...
I just can't understand anyone standing at the dock and watching this thing come in for which they paid with their lives. I guess they completely underestimated the size and power of this tsunami. Rule number 1: expect the worst in tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes and any force of nature. Sad.
The Japanese strength, through a triple disaster, is amazing. Such scary times! I want to give big hugs to all of Japan affected by the 2011 disaster. My heart aches for those who were lost 😭

They would've been awoken by the earthquake and warning system. Plus a lotta those docks and beaches would've been emptier, so it might've actually been a good thing. I've never been to Japan though so I don't know the geography. For instance, you see what happened to the millions of residential homes in Indonesia and the other countries from the 2004 tsunami. All sea level residential homes without an advanced warning system or strong earthquake, so in those circumstances it would've been devastating. Not to sure that applies to this one though.

What they did not realize is how fast the water was going to come in. It looked as if it was rising slowly and not very high. In some areas, the water was four stories high. Hospital patients had to be transported in their beds using the stairs from the 1 - 4 floors by hospital staff. They had less than 15 minutes to save everyone. For some, their offices or homes were not high enough to escape the wave.

It just amazes me on how it happened just from a quiet simple overflow of water to then seeing an entire city just be erased ....just can’t imagine the lasting trauma of experiencing this has caused 🤭🥺😭
This along with other amateur videos, is an amazing piece of historic footage of this natural catastrophe. Watching the wave crash in to destroy the city at 25:00, then recede and surge back -- a most amazing and horrific hour captured on film. I do credit the individuals who stood bravely and filmed, even perhaps as they wondered about family and friends but helpless to aide them. My prayers for all the survivors.
32.32 one of these men did an interview for tv..he was in his car and got washed onto the bridge where he managed to get to safety...and just in time before the second wave hits.
Imagine living in that area and seeing your house and your neighbor's houses getting destroyed. But what's really sad is, if you are at work or at school that time and you don't even know whatever is happening to your family.
animals always have a sense for things like that. they even have dogs that alert owners they are about to have a seizure or low blood sugar. even cancer sniffing dogs.
There is nothing that scares me more than the sound of your towns alarm (the alarm that alarms you about a danger happening and you have to get inside) that just starts ringing and the panic settles in... Im scared now

0:24:35 you can see two cars pass by on the street right next to the harbor. 20:00 You can also see people standing on boats and near the crash wall at the harbor. I guess they didn't expect it to be that bad... those poor souls did not survive.
The two survivors on the bridge at 33:00 are the same two that are seen lingering on the levee until the last moment in the first 20 min of the video. Thank God they survived, it's a miracle. A small consolation in this tragedy.

I believe the guy walking on the left pier at 42:49 made his way to the right side appearing at 48:36 jumped down to a lower pier (looks like he's swimming...but no way) made his way walking to the bridge and reappears on the bridge at 51:25 making his way toward the building where this being filmed from.
The scary part for me starts at 18:30, when the water starts cascading over the distant sea wall.You can really sense the shock that people must have felt when from 22:00 to 24:00, they discover to their horror that the sea defenses which they had hoped would stay the inundation prove to be totally inadequate and the water just demolisheds and buries the port in seconds.
At the very beginning of the video the water level is quite low. If you drag the "red timeline placement dot" on the timeline through the 12-17 minute mark you can really see the level coming back up without yet a big destructive wave. Pretty interesting physics at play. The camera zooms outward for awhile. Then at the 18 minute mark, you can see the piers that were maybe 10 feet above water level are now completely submerged.
My ❤️ heart & prayers go out to the people of Japan, and I know many of my family and friends here in America feel the same. If there’s one people that can prevail I believe the Japanese can, you are a robust & tough people.

Incredible video, and more terrifying because it is unedited. The speed of the water retreating is always so surprising to see. It also catches the rescue of the man in his car by the man on the bridge. Important tsunami coverage.
Wow, this is nothing like "tidal waves" in movies! It's not a wave the height of a skyscraper. It seems deceptively small, but unexpectedly relentless-- and just as deadly, except it destroys towns and kills people slowly instead of all at once. Tsunami alarms should include someone shouting, "It's not like the movies! It's not like the movies! JUST RUN!"
Because those waves are not high but long, the slip of subduction zone (that also caused earthquake it self) lifted water mass in wide area but not high enough to make waves like in movies.
after watching these videos the water reminds me of layers just stacking onto each other. little by little the water rises and climbs over its obstacle.
Excellent learning video about tsunami's ...water withdrawal and then multiple incoming waves. It shows depth of withdrawal, aftershocks, peoples behavior, survival, and later devastation.
Anyone else notice how the water is slowing receding from the piers where the boat is tied up? Wow...then it rushes back in before the wave at 16:30. Also the vast majority of boats that went out to sea, survived because the tsunami wasn't breaking out there. Those who left in their boats saved them and also likely their own lives.
At one time, we only read about these tragedies. Video and You Tube has changed it all. I can't imagine the fear that people were going through, but seeing through the eyes of normal people that were there is frightening. Similar to 9-11 but even on a bigger scale.
In school, when they told us - run if you see water receding. I always thought receding water would be a fast process, instead it’s receding quite slowly. Slowly enough that people wouldn’t notice easily. How frightening.
This is probably the craziest tsunami video in how the land was dry and not much happening and then suddenly a giant wall of water tore apart buildings and everything. Scary as hell.

uneditedとあったので拝見しました。岩手県釜石港湾事務所からの撮影と概要欄に有りますね。私の叔父と叔母は宮城県石巻市の大川小学校の近くで被災し亡くなりました。この時東京にいる母や姉たちが心配で叔母達が行方不明と判ったのは一週間後でしたので3.11に東北の沿岸の街がどんな状況だったのか津波が去った翌日の状況が今回初めて見ることができて感謝しています。未だに行方不明の方の亡き骸が必ず見つかり、ご遺族の皆様が安らげますように祈っています

Total shock. They first experienced a 5+ minute earthquake which is totally crazy, and then the tsunami, which was even crazier.

You are wrong about that. A lot of the places that were hit hard, have never recovered. There have been a few videos of the aftermath, and some places are still in a state of devastation.
Just look on Google Earth and you see many devastated towns are now fields for growing crops like rice. They rebuilt far from the shores

And apparently some people "prepared" by going and standing on the harbour wall to watch. I just don't have the words to express just what an insane choice that is.
to me 30 minutes is enough time to get to higher ground if you are near it,eve if you drive away for 30 minutes is better then staying close the the harbor
If I start to feel down or depressed I just need to watch any of these videos of what Northeastern Japan experienced on March 11, 2011. All of the videos that document the Earthquake and Tsunami show that the Japanese people are strong and work together to survive. I can only hope that if I ever experience such an event in my lifetime that my neighbors and friends will be able to display the same qualities of many of the people that I witnessed in these videos. A truly sad day with the loss of over 15,000 people. I pay my heartfelt respect to the relatives and friends and colleagues of those who lost there lives or were injured.

Man this footage is so devastating. I've never lived where there was hurricanes or tsunami only tornados. To see how a tsunami has such a vast swath of destruction is incredible. With tornadoes the destruction is of equal power but in such a tiny area. Tsunamis just swallow everything in their path in this rapid creep of water that's awful to behold.
I was in the Thailand tsunami and luckily all ma family were safe apart from me and my dad but we stayed together and this old man helped us out 💗 I had cut my leg open so I had to have crutches but luckily my dad hadn't got any serious injuries . we were on Christmas holiday but it turned a lovely holiday into a life changing experience

They were planning on going to the beach that day.
Since they lived in the center of the country it as a coin toss wether they went to the Northern or Southern beaches that day.
That day they went north.
That decision probably saved their lives.

Unfortunately many of us in the West have no real idea about the sheer destructive power that water in great volume has. Back in 1977, as a 16 year old, I witnessed the power of a Typhoon in Hong Kong and saw a 4 storey block of flats side down the side of a hill, whilst bamboo scaffolding poles thicker than a person's thigh were being plucked from the ground and flung about like cocktail sticks. I was living on the 11th floor of a block of flats and we were flooded by the endless deluge! The one curious aspect of that event was seeing all the boat people from the storm shelters heading out to sea like a small armada - they obviously knew how to handle themselves as they returned the day after intact. Ok, so this experience wasn't as traumatic as this dreadful Tsunami and only 2 people lost their lives that year in Hong Kong, but it made a very deep impression on me and taught me a tough lesson about how wild Nature really is. When the alarm sounds - run like hell!
Much respect to the Japanese citizenry for a few reasons.
1. Documenting water's destructive power as it consumed, then razed their town, but refusing to film the death or peril of another person. I have watched many YT video accounts of this disaster and have not witnessd a single occurrance where the death of another person was filmed for spectacle.
2. There were no news accounts of affected survivors rioting or looting in the weeks and months following the disaster.
Hat's off to the BOSS man who suddenly appeared on the bridge at 51:20... With dry hair... Wearing dry clothes... Between tsunami wave pulses... He looked around a short while, then calmly swaggered himself up the hill toward the camera.

I've always remembered the "boss man" - as you call him. Calmly inspecting the damage. In my mind I've always imagined he stayed calm of mind no matter what and couldn't wait to get on with the clear up and restoration without fuss.

I barely remember the feeling of being scared and traumatized by tsunami that hit my country. I feel really bad for people who lost their loved ones. I didn’t even lose anything. I just got scared and that’s it. There were many footage of people just dying on tv when it happened. But now people nearly forget about it when they aren’t reminded. It’s really sad...

I lived in Oregon at the time of this Tsunami. There was large chunks of debris such as wood structures that floated across the Pacific on ocean currents and washed up on the Oregon coast 6 years after the event. Most pieces of the debris washing up on the west coast had what were considered "invasive species" attached to it. Not sure what those were ..maybe some type of live barnacles ?? But seeing this stuff really brought home the reality of what Tsunamis can do. Sobering stuff for sure.
Invasive species are anything from plants to certain animals that aren’t native and could harm native eco systems. For example, if a certain plant showed up in America from another country, it could grow abundant here but in the process take out other plants that were good here. Which would in turn affect what would grow, and eliminate other plants we have here… which would also in turn hurt the animals too because certain animals can’t eat certain plants etc… it can cause a major chain reaction like that. It can be bad enough to where it can affect agriculture. Some plants take in too much water and kill other plants in the process. Those are also considered invasive species. Hopefully that makes sense. If you want an example starlings are a bird that are considered invasive, spotted knapweed is a plant and it’s another example. Also one more thing to note is invasive species can also mean it was native to a state and carried over to another state. So there’s different versions.

Kind of scary to see how the water goes down at first (lowest point at around 13:10), just look at the harbor and the boat, and the at first slowly and then more quickly starts to rise (compare to 17:00)!
I really wonder how many of the boats speeding out of the harbor survived.
Hard to imagine being in such situation, the danger is impossible to estimated beforehand, it all seems so calm except for the sirenes and the warnings over the speakers - which always gives me goose bumps. Can't believe how calm the people around the camera stay - and how people did not immediatly seek safety when they saw the water rise again...
Those boats that sped out had a very good chance of survival. Once you get out quicker, the boat can ride over the wave much easier.
I just can't understand anyone standing at the dock and watching this thing come in for which they paid with their lives. I guess they completely underestimated the size and power of this tsunami. Rule number 1: expect the worst in tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes and any force of nature. Sad.

They would've been awoken by the earthquake and warning system. Plus a lotta those docks and beaches would've been emptier, so it might've actually been a good thing. I've never been to Japan though so I don't know the geography. For instance, you see what happened to the millions of residential homes in Indonesia and the other countries from the 2004 tsunami. All sea level residential homes without an advanced warning system or strong earthquake, so in those circumstances it would've been devastating. Not to sure that applies to this one though.

What they did not realize is how fast the water was going to come in. It looked as if it was rising slowly and not very high. In some areas, the water was four stories high. Hospital patients had to be transported in their beds using the stairs from the 1 - 4 floors by hospital staff. They had less than 15 minutes to save everyone. For some, their offices or homes were not high enough to escape the wave.

This along with other amateur videos, is an amazing piece of historic footage of this natural catastrophe. Watching the wave crash in to destroy the city at 25:00, then recede and surge back -- a most amazing and horrific hour captured on film. I do credit the individuals who stood bravely and filmed, even perhaps as they wondered about family and friends but helpless to aide them. My prayers for all the survivors.

There is nothing that scares me more than the sound of your towns alarm (the alarm that alarms you about a danger happening and you have to get inside) that just starts ringing and the panic settles in... Im scared now

0:24:35 you can see two cars pass by on the street right next to the harbor. 20:00 You can also see people standing on boats and near the crash wall at the harbor. I guess they didn't expect it to be that bad... those poor souls did not survive.
The two survivors on the bridge at 33:00 are the same two that are seen lingering on the levee until the last moment in the first 20 min of the video. Thank God they survived, it's a miracle. A small consolation in this tragedy.

The scary part for me starts at 18:30, when the water starts cascading over the distant sea wall.You can really sense the shock that people must have felt when from 22:00 to 24:00, they discover to their horror that the sea defenses which they had hoped would stay the inundation prove to be totally inadequate and the water just demolisheds and buries the port in seconds.
At the very beginning of the video the water level is quite low. If you drag the "red timeline placement dot" on the timeline through the 12-17 minute mark you can really see the level coming back up without yet a big destructive wave. Pretty interesting physics at play. The camera zooms outward for awhile. Then at the 18 minute mark, you can see the piers that were maybe 10 feet above water level are now completely submerged.
My ❤️ heart & prayers go out to the people of Japan, and I know many of my family and friends here in America feel the same. If there’s one people that can prevail I believe the Japanese can, you are a robust & tough people.

Because those waves are not high but long, the slip of subduction zone (that also caused earthquake it self) lifted water mass in wide area but not high enough to make waves like in movies.
after watching these videos the water reminds me of layers just stacking onto each other. little by little the water rises and climbs over its obstacle.

Excellent learning video about tsunami's ...water withdrawal and then multiple incoming waves. It shows depth of withdrawal, aftershocks, peoples behavior, survival, and later devastation.
Anyone else notice how the water is slowing receding from the piers where the boat is tied up? Wow...then it rushes back in before the wave at 16:30.
Also the vast majority of boats that went out to sea, survived because the tsunami wasn't breaking out there. Those who left in their boats saved them and also likely their own lives.

Two things I would suggest for the building. A rooftop generator, and a secure, strong deployable ladder to get to the rooftop.
At one time, we only read about these tragedies. Video and You Tube has changed it all. I can't imagine the fear that people were going through, but seeing through the eyes of normal people that were there is frightening. Similar to 9-11 but even on a bigger scale.

In school, when they told us - run if you see water receding. I always thought receding water would be a fast process, instead it’s receding quite slowly. Slowly enough that people wouldn’t notice easily. How frightening.
This is probably the craziest tsunami video in how the land was dry and not much happening and then suddenly a giant wall of water tore apart buildings and everything. Scary as hell.
Thank you for uploading, truly epic disaster footage. The sea level drop before the tsunami is a weird phenomenon to see.
