    Tarps and bivi bags work well in the rain esp if the ground is already wet and it's still raining, something that I try and avoid unless it's work. Also in a military sleeping bag you have space to get dressed, and a British army bivi bag can fit 2 in side in a emergency (buddy buddy heat). Civilian kits much smaller and lighter

    A bivy bag and tarp is a excellent combination when stealth camping, you use the tarp when it is raining because you have much less chance of been discovered while it is raining because fewer people are out and you just use the bivy bag in good weather.

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks for watching.
      Its totally ok to carry both. But whats stopping you from just using a bivibag or just a tarp? Because if its nice weather you wouldnt really need a bivibag. The bivi is the absolute ultralight option, as its normaly a very snug one person tent. If it rains you could also use just a tarp if you know your setups.
      But if someone uses these sleeping bag bivi liners, thats another story.
      Just use wathever you like if it works for you my friend!
      Have a nice day

      @@BasedGnome Hallo 🙂,
      I'm guessing that a tarp would be useful if it's raining just to protect the inside of the bivvy bag when getting in and out? And maybe it would be more confortable to sleep in a bivvy under a tarp when in heavy rain storms? I enjoyed the video, vielen dank!!

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@moi7748 Hey, thx for watching. Of course both of those would be excellent in the conditions you mentioned. Thats why it's always important to try to pack for the weather you'll be getting in. But thats not always possible.
      I just think of waterproof bivis as "quick access" shelters that are lightweight and very fast and easy to setup, but not as comfortable or suited for every situation.
      If I knew I would be getting in a heavy storm I would probably pack a tent, which would also be almost the same weight as a bivi+tarp combo, but that are just choices that have proven themselves to me over time :)
      But thats also just from a few days hike/stay perspective. If one would be out for weeks or months, a bivi+tarp (or in this case, poncho, because it also serves as raincoat) would be a nice choice in my mind... at least if you are alone.
      Thats part of the fun in staying outside, just trying different approaches and finding what works for you :)
      Have a great day, friend!

    Is the undetarp really required? I've used mine in the woods and on rocks in heavy rain and even storms, and it never gets wet or whatever and I feel the material is so thick It doesn't need extra protection, but what are your thoughts? I must say I enjoyed this video quite alot.

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! To be honest, I dont really think it's required to use a groundsheet, I just like to use one, for one the undersite does not get wet or dirty or muddy (especially in winter) and I think IF water would come trough then trough the bottom because of the pressure. But the real reason is that i just always use a groundsheet. Now I would use my savotta sleeping mat, because it insulates me while acting as a groundsheet. Have a nice day!

      Awesome! I hope it will work out for you! I have later tried laying in there with Zorro, but it was veery tight and it got almost uncomfortably warm in there, but hey, maybe thats a plus if you plan on using it in very cold weather. Ha. Well then, have fun.

      Well, regarding our weather this summer I think we will have a very snowy and cold winter this year, I hope it wont be too bad.

      Hey Stealth Andy! Thank you for watching my video. Yeah, the bivi is a bit expensive I know. I got lucky with mine on Ebay, although its pretty cheap compared to the "non army" version of carinthia. Have a great Christmas Time!

    I love your NVA strichtarn shovel cover. I have the Russian one with a boring Khaki colour. I really like strichtarn camo. I have a grenade pouch that makes a brilliant little fire pouch for my flint and steel, ferro rod, rocket lighter, torch, knife, cordage and tinder. etc. Also have an NVA AK47 magazine pouch, same camo, makes and excellent bag to keep my knives- hook knife, sloyd knife, bushcraft knife etc. Also have the NVA rucksack, that I use as a shoulder bag, but also makes an excellent set of panniers for my bicycle- all the NVA stuff is really waterproof and “tough as old boots”!😁😂 And very, very cool, in my opinion, anyway!😁

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thx, yeah the cover is a modified old nva magazine pouch. Pretty easy to craft by yourself! Agree, strichtarn is pretty dope.
      Thank you for watching!

      @@BasedGnome That’s very interesting, there’s a UK eBayer selling a folding NVA shovel, it’s got a plastic case but also a strichtarn one that, after reading that you made yours, this does look as though it’s not original, wondering if they’ve done the same!😁. They want £60 for it, definitely not interested at that price!😟

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mat-kr1nf Wow no, definitely not a good price! I wouldn't even recommend the folding nva shovel itself tbh. I just did a quick search and the magazine-pouches here seem to have gotten to a price of around 15 euros. I got mine years ago for 5 at a local armystore... I also didn't really build it out of that pouch for style purposes, it was just the first pouch-like thing I found that the shovel fit in, and I didn't really use it, so it got slashed. Im sure youll find something for a better price.
      But I would recommend to stay away from cold steels own shovelpouch, last time I checked the quality of that thing was horrendous haha.
      Have a great day!

    • @Mat-kr1nf
      @Mat-kr1nf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BasedGnome Nice one, no way would I pay that price!🤣 Some strichtarn seems to have got very expensive. I paid £6 each for my backpacks a year or so ago, I’ve just been trying to locate another today, I have 3, two are the standard type, one has extra waterproofing, like a foldable inner sleeve, the same waterproof material as the lining. I wanted another one to use them as pannier, people are selling them as much as £37! Fortunately I managed to locate one in America at £10, although I had to pay £12 postage (it’s always really expensive to get things from there!🤬). I have the proper Russian/Soviet shovel, with the pouch that comes with it. The shovel is solid, to say the least!😁. I’ve just bought a Russian army hammock/tent that was made to be used in Chechnya by the VDV (paratroopers), it is very interesting, going to have to silicone seal the seams before use, it looks really cool! A bit like a larger Dutch bivi on a hammock, no Gortex, but plenty observation windows and ventilation, plus a lot more room!😁

    (I NEED HELP) I want to get one for myself, but I don’t know where to buy a Genuine one from a legit company... one website is selling a new one for £80, while another website sells a new one for £140...? Could you please recommend me one? Thank you.

    • @BasedGnome
      @BasedGnome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my, I'm sorry, TH-cam didn't notify me about your comment. I havent seen a reproduction of those until now, so I think everyone youll buy will be "legit". I've noticed them getting cheaper in the last few months as well! I'd recommend to buy the cheaper one you can find if its said to be grade A, and watch for the return policy of the store.
      I tested mine right away by putting clothing in it and putting it in the shower, then letting the water "lay" on it for a while. If it soaks through on some parts, you should send it back.
      If it doesn't, it would still be wise to invest in some goretex cleaning/impregnating products to make it fully operational again.
      I hope I could help you.
      Have a great day!

    What was the ground sheet or under tarp that you put down first?

      Hey Michael! The tarp I put down first is a so called "Elefantenhaut" (elephant skin) of the Bundeswehr. If you cant find these for very cheap you are better off just using a piece of those cheap tarps from the hardware store.

      @BasedGnome  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! I'm using a groundsheet of the Bundeswehr. We call it "Elefantenhaut" (elephant skin). I don't know how availlable it is in other countries, but until a while ago you could get them dirt cheap in germany. They've gotten more expensive because I think they stopped using them in the army. Maybe you can get some cheap on ebay. I wouldn't pay more than 6 euros for one. It's just for convenience really. One of those cheap green tarps you can get at wallmart will work just as good and just as heavy.
