    Not trying to just criticize but the number of strokes on the teeth doesn’t matter if you use the raker depth gage correctly. The raker guide works based off the tooth height that is directly behind it. So if he is doing it like he is in the video, it’s wrong because there is nothing to tie the height of the tooth to the height of the raker that dictates the depth of cut. Hope this helps love the videos keep up the good work!

      @Doubie. ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’d also like to point out that yes a dry grinder will weaken the teeth you can mitigate that with wet grinding but it leaves a consistent grind but a bad hand file job that’s not consistent can cause a saw to pull to one side because the teeth aren’t even

    • @jolkraeremeark6949
      @jolkraeremeark6949 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Doubie. that's Dylan's point, the teeth don't need to be the same size if the rakers, or depth gauges, are based on the size of the teeth.

    Very informative vid there Stan. I did learn something today. I have a Husqvarna 455 Rancher with a 20" bar and it has worked flawlessly for the last 7 years. I also have a Husqvarna dealer right down the road where I purchased my saw and he does all the sharpening for me. I do have the correct files for sharpening when I need them sharpened in a pinch, but I learned a few tips from this young fella. Thanks for sharing.

    Always good to have knowledge building vids. Couple things, he didn't mention the square angle (most all the chains I've used are a "compound" angle!), the mark on the bottom is the front to back angle. You still have an up & down angle too (most are on the box), lol.
    When I bought my first gas saw (have an antique Craftsman electric 16", all metal. Big log dogs, isn't fast, but doesn't slow down!) I also bought an Oregon clamp on guide, you can set both angles, works great (I can hand file too, now)! But I used to file them like my chisels, saw blades & knifes, so I didn't leave the burr on the cutting face. Since the internet (lol) I've seen most are stroking away from that face, leaving a burr (I guess it's gone with the first few cuts!). Guess I'm still curious about that...
    Worn out a bunch of saws over the last 4 decades, lol. One thing I do is after i've cleaned it, I spray it down with silicone spray (frankly, ALL my tools), after its dry you can brush (or blow) most of the crap off... I think it keeps the tools around longer. Certainly appreciate all the teaching, & variety, of your videos. Thanx !

Great video, someone mentioned giving Tanner a mike to hear better, also, have a light specifically pointing what your going to video. The raker always gives me trouble measuring them.Ive had 6 gages to file them but none that seem to give me a accurate result.Ive resorted to measuring them in a precision vice and a dial gage to measure the distance from cutter to racker.This is done off bar with the chain in the vice and the dial gage on a manget mounted to the vice top surface and pulling the slightly tightened chain through the vice measuring the distance between the two.

    This guy doesn't understand the raker. You should know you don't have to count your strokes on each tooth. If you have a raker gauge that adjusts the raker for each cutter tooth, unlike the one he was using. The raker gauge he's using, uses the teeth before and after the tooth you're trying to adjust. This would make sense why he's trying to count his strokes trying to average the raker height. Make sure you're making the surfaces true and perpendicular to help the saw cutting straight.
