    I like the fill and empty method during the water change in the other video. I always wanted to try that method myself. Thanks for the shout out man. I sometimes like to use the lava rubble method depending on the scape. Probably is a better method for larger aquariums. Mine are all too small at the moment, so thanks for bringing this method to life and for the shout out.

    I have been watching dirted tank videos for days and I wish I had seen this one a long time ago. It has been most helpful. The only thing I would change is you sift and we the soil before putting it in. It helps keep air bubbles out. I also squeezed out the excess water before placing it in the bottom. It really it’s down any cloudy seepage issues with the dirt. I’m using your lava rock trick. You just got a follower. Awesome job!

    55G 2 inches minimum of ProMix organic potting soil covered with 1/2" of thoroughly rinsed coarse construction sand.
    It made the water a little yellow at first from the tannins but that cleared up after a few 10% water changes.

    I would put the top gravel layer before the parts of the hardscape, just to make sure no soil from around the hardscape isn’t covered up and cloud up the water. I plan on doing a soil setup on my 31 gallon for the first time and I think I’m going to overkill the top substrate, by doing soil, coarse gravel and then smoother but still coarse sand

    This is a warning to any beginners to the hobby watching this video. A dirt tank should not be your first tank. We followed this video pretty much step by step to try and do our first tank and the soil really fucked things up. When we looked into it more most discussion boards on the topic recommended doing a lot more things to the soil before just putting it into your tank. It's a nice video but just maybe don't do this for a first tank.

    • @fredrikmudas
      @fredrikmudas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      agreed. make sure you have your soil clean from any debris, I use a garden soil mix with organic compost. to decrease a bubble which will come up later, try to stir it (after you add water as much as the height of the dirt) when you set up the layer substrate so a lot of bubbles will come out and then you can top it with sand and then supersmall gravel. the sand will keep the dirt mix with the top layer so there will be no soil leach to the water column. Happy Aquascaping~

    • @cole5561

    • @cgirl111
      @cgirl111 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You should keep in mind dirt tanks don't last forever. They will wear out and require a full reboot. If you are in it for the long haul learn a bit about liquid ferts and go with an inert substrate.

      I had my first tank over a week ago. I have to do 7 water changes every single day, because the pH level keep dropping as well as the ammonia keep rising. I hope more people with cover the topic of soil aquarium tank. It is extremely difficult for beginners.
