I’m a drummer, at 63 years old, still playing, started at age 6, my drum teacher was a famous drummer from an era gone bye .. Mr.Doc Myers .. wish I grew up in the days of all the great drummer’s from the past including this man Mr. Sandy Nelson !
Bless him what a great guy can still play amazingly well , thanks for the drums Sandy I absolutely love listing to you all those years back and still do 👏👏🙏👍
Sandy Nelson was my mentor. When I was learning to play rock drums, I'd pay along with his LP's for hours. Beat that drum was my first Sandy Nelson record. I never reached his level of playing but I mimicked his basic style. I sure do miss playing in a rock band. did it from 1968 - 73 and on and off from 1975-1986 after my Army stint. Still have my Ludwig Mod Orange drum kit.
What I always admired about Sandy Nelson was that he had that GENE KRUPA sound in his drumming. Sandy was always great to listen to. He would combine that Krupa style with l960 sounds. Sandy Nelson like the best of them had his own style. Lots of drummers out there today and most of them all sound the SAME SAME You take super drummers like Buddy Rich Louie Bellson Gene Krupa Max Roach these drummers had their styles. SANDY NELSON has his style that belongs to Sandy and no one plays like Sandy today. Thank You Sandy Nelson for being the Sandy we will always admire and respect.
Good afternoon. My name is Marty. I’m a 70-year-old attorney and I live in Louisville Kentucky. I’m also an amateur drummer. This afternoon I’m listening to Sandy Nelson: “Let There Be Drums.”
Miss him and the trips to see him and eat in Boulder. I got this link from Preston Ritter a very long time ago and play it sometimes. I miss them both.
Glad there’s a video of him actually playing, that way if someone were to try and transcribe it to drums they would see what he plays and if they’re doing it correctly.
Sandy was never just another exercise in rudiments like many drummers that solo. He did know his rudiments though. But he always had dancing shoes on them when using them.
Remember, Sandy only has one foot. He lost one in a road accident in the 60's, after Let There Be Drums was a hit. That's why he doesn't use the hi hat. His left foot is used to play the bass drum, so he has to cross his leg. Amazing guy.
The first great rock drummer! I have most of his LP's groovin' drummer in the syncopated swing era and rock styles! Check out his solo on "Cool Operator" echos of classic swing era drumming!
Plenty of star drummers, well before Sandy... Look at all the great jazz and big band drummers. Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Sonny Payne, Rufus Jones, Louie Bellson.ext.

What Gene Krupa was to jazz drumming Sandy Nelson was to rock drumming. I have almost all of his albums. The man rocks!
sound good, groove good, feeling good - all good!!
That was quite good! Good engineering on this one. The musicians stayed true to the spirit of the original.
Missing Sandy and our great visits at Milo’s. What a conversation!
