  • In this video, we go over how to swap the lensboard your large format lens is mounted to. All you need is a spanner wrench! Here I am swapping a copal 0 lensboard with a 150mm 4x5 lens (Roodenstock Sironar N), but the process is similar for most large format lenses.
Be extra careful when handling your lens not to touch the glass. Also be careful with the spanner wrench not to scratch your lens or strip off the notches on the nut holding the lens to the board.

Thanks super easy. I don't have a spanner wrench but I can find one. There is a thing called a lens wrench which is usually a flat square piece of metal with "prongs" for the various Copal sized rings. I suppose it works similarly. They are quite cheap on eBay.

Any ideas as to how dismantle a lens from a lens board that was incorrectly assembled? Having not shot 4x5 in a long time I accidently put my adapter ring on the opposite side of the lens board. Right now it looks like: Lens- Shutter- Ring Adapter- Lens Board- and finally the rear element, which makes the entire assembly loose.

Without holding and looking at it it’s hard to say. Can you just remove the rear element to get it off the lensboard?

@@drew_nikonowicz Totally understand without a visual. I tried to remove the rear element but its stuck in place. Rather than risk prying it off I thought I'd ask.

@@thesurge242 Well shoot! Yeah unfortunately my best advice would be to carefully remove elements until you can get at whatever has it all bound together.

Can you recommend a good spanner wrench, please? And where to get it?

I can't remember where I got mine, but this is almost exactly what I have: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1695993-REG/zuma_z_aflrp_spanner_wrench.html
Works great, and straightforward to use! This one even has a better system for tightening down the width of your wrench when using it which would probably help a ton for preventing stripping or breaking anything during use. Hope this helps!

anyone experiencing a too tight of a ring (so much so that feels stuck?) thanks for taking the time :)

I’ve been there! It’s scary and I’ve definitely felt like I was going to break something before. I’d double check you’re unscrewing it and not tightening, and just continue to be careful. There’s no great secret (that I know of) other than carefully apply more force 😅
