Mate, I think the concept of a super SUV actually makes a lot of sense!! Let's face it, Huracans, Aventadors or any 2-seater Aston... see racetracks as often as an SUV goes offroad. These super SUVs allow you to do what you actually do with the other supercars (drive around with you mates, do some spirited driving, make some noise, etc.) with the added bonus that you can carry more people, you can easily go on road trips and the fact that your significant other will actually like the shape of it, which makes it easier to justify. Plus remember, it doesn't have to be your ONLY car, these people might as well have a Porsche GT4 for when they want to hit the track, so what's the big deal?
Mate ! I currently have a Cayenne Turbo GT , X5 M and a Bentayga S plus a load of 911.2 & 922 (6 in total) I can buy anything I want. DBX is still UGLY
SUVs are more like to roll over in a crash than hatchbacks, minivans or estates as the center of gravity is higher in an SUV. As the entire body of the car is higher than normal cars, the headlights are often higher as well which leads to SUV drivers blinding most other people on the road. Some people argue that getting in and out of SUVs is easier. Well, as the seating position in a minivan is pretty much identical to SUVs, there is at least an alternative. SUVs are meant to have offroad capabilities. But almost no SUV owners take their SUV offroad or even buy it for that reason. And to be honest, any allroad version of an estate (e.g. Passat alltrack, A6 allroad, E-Class all-terrain etc.) will be as capable offroad as the typical SUV. The handling of an SUV is worse than other cars because of that high enter of gravity. So yeah, SUVs don't seem to make very much sense to me I must admit. But the opinion that "a super SUV makes sense" seems completely wrong to me. You take a "practical type of car" with "offroad capabilities" that doesn't make much sense in the first place. Then you add a lot of power, lower it and give it a firm ride to somehow rescue what's left of the "handling". What you end up with is a heavy, uncomfortable car with lots of power and some practicality in terms of usable interior space. All of that effort to mimic a type of car which has been designed specifically for its job: A sportscar! Let's face it: Super SUVs are the pinnacle of automotive stupidity. If you want a practical and sporty car, go for sporty estates or limousines. Your C or E-Class AMG, RS4 or RS6, BMW M5 or M3, the choice is yours. But calling super SUVs anything close to "sensible" is just... not right in my eyes. But each to their own!
Ah sorry, one last thing: I forgot to include prices for the VWs. If you set the prices into relation with the point-ranking in one of my previous comments, you'd get the following results: - Golf = 1st place & lowest price - Passat = 2nd place and second lowest price - Touran = 3rd place and highest price - Tiguan = 4th place and second highest price Things become very interesting when you set price and loading capacity into relation and compare the Tiguan to the Touran: - Touran: 18,31€ per liter of loading capacity - Tiguan: 20,24€ per liter of loading capacity
Great video as always Sam! As an Aston sales person I am biased but can go on for a while why I think the DBX is better. On the normal car, the sports exhaust is essential. As well, the DBX707 is more of a competitor on performance with the Urus than the normal car
Better comparison would be with a DBX 707. I would take that over that Lambo Touareg any day. If you're talking about "what Aston owners use the car for" (not driving dynamics), then you forget to mention it has class leading interior space and boot space and is far more comfortable than a Urus. So I don't entirely agree when you say the problem is with "the rest of the car", that's an over generalisation. The reason you can figure out the Urus more easily is because it's in the VW group and therefore has basically the same tech in as an average VW. I think the Aston is just as good as the Lambo at being a fast SUV but better at being an every day road car. It has more breadth of ability

I really struggle with the concept of any suv unless you ACTUALLY want to go offroad, in which case buy a Land Cruiser. Everyone else should get estates, audi allroad or XC Volvos are often more capable anyway.
To my eye in true Aston Martin fashion the DBX is the only one of all the silly ridiculously expensive SUV's that actually looks nice, therefore it's the one I would take

People always use this argument on the Urus. Look at the values they retain. Urus Performante will bring in even more over MSRP. Money is in a significantly better place with a urus over RSQ8, even if you believe they are the same car.
I remember a 6 am Red line run from Northbtidge to Freemantle in a full works Lancia Integrale 16v Perth is much more relaxed then Melbourne or Sydney for extreme blasts 😂

The Urus just doesn’t look special enough. I know it’s a really capable car but when you see one on the road it just doesn’t stand out enough. The DBX does stand out and looks great.

You haven’t mentioned any of the prices of these vehicles in Australia. That DBX is a 600000AUD vehicle and the carplay isn’t touch screen - that would just continually piss me off and I love AM as a brand…
The DBX doesn't need to be a Lamborghini beater. Neither does any of the Super SUVs. They are all (Benteyga, DBX, URUS, Cullinan, Purosangue) Unique in their own beautiful way and Sometimes it's not about which is better. We can't all love the same things.

I know next to nothing about car tech, but I'm really shocked at how much these cars struggled in the sand (and it was actually quite gravelly sand). Is that normal?? I thought these things were meant to eat through tricky terrain.
Traction settings, control of accelerator, the massive rims and skinny tires, and the tires themselves, will have affected the performance on the sand. I think the fact they were not keeping an even speed/acceleration didn't help
I like the Aston DBX, but it doesn't quite do it for me. If I was going to have a V8 SUV with another companies old infotainment, I'd have the Maserati Levante GTS/Trofeo. At least then I'd have a Ferrari TT V8 and Uconnect, which is brilliant! LOL
For the uras is in a unique position in our minds, its a lambo🙂 However, if I was dbx shopping, my money would go a full fat range rover, give up the uras performance and relise the ladies comfort and all round abilities.
For me the Aston looks better and I'm not a fan of touch screens in cars, they look awful covered in finger prints. So if i had the money and wanted something like a super suv i would definitely consider the Aston.
If it was $100k cheaper in Canada, the Aston would be excellent. All Aston's are just too pricey, because there are better cheaper competitors in Canada (eg just get an AMG if you love the engine for less money and luxury that is on par).

Buy an RSQ8 and pocket the change! Also a brilliant compromise between the two

707 version of the DBX is the best version to drive. Standard DBX feels like a stop gap.
