Feel like this movie was too complex for them. They struggle with a lot of details. She's not an FBI agent, she hadn't graduated. She's not even a rookie. Earlier in the movie you see she fails to clear a room properly in training. She's not perfect. Buffalo Bill things he has the edge since she can't see him. So he plays around a bit. He is shown to have ego throughout the whole movie. She hears him cock his gun, that gives him away in the dark. And yeah, Rob is missing the point. It wasn't supposed to be a good exchange. Sh*t happens in life, it's not always clean. Their intent was not to let loose Hannibal in order to capture Buffalo Bill, but that was the result. As it relates to the escape. The police aren't paramedics and it's a live sitaution. They're not going to check his body there. The goal was to get him out of there as quickly as possible to get him medical attention while securing the crime scene. No one is thinking, oh this is going to be a guy wearing a guy's face.
It's not that it's complex it's just not a movie you can watch with your friends especially when your friend group fucks around and makes a lot of jokes.
@@mulanomulayeah, a movie like this requires a lot of paying attention to details and that’s going to be nearly impossible in a group setting, particularly a raucous reaction setting. Single lines of dialogue can be ultra-important and if spoken during quiet moments when people are more likely to be reacting and talking to each other a mountain of information gets missed.
Rob is completely missing the point that Hannibal said the world is more interesting with Clarice in it...that line right there implies that Hannibal won't come after her, but he will stay in contact with her, yet he doesn't want to have to kill her from her coming after him and hindering his life.
Another problem is that they have no idea that Hannibal is basically "courting" Clarice for most of the film, Rob seems to be completely unaware that Hannibal and Clarice throughout the film become emotionally attached to one another. I'm pretty sure that in the books, especially by the end of Hannibal (The book, not the movie), they are seemingly in love with one another. It annoys me when people don't pick up on any of these things, but I can understand why these guys might not see the subtlety especially because they talk WAY too much while watching this film. This is the type of film where it's best to watch alone.
I think the genius of a lot of older films gets lost on younger people with modern sensibilities. It's wild to compare this cinematic masterpiece to an episode of SVU.
I don't think that is true. I watch this movie for the first time 2 or 3 years ago and completely understood it. And I'm in my early 20s. I showed my teenage sister the original Carrie and she understood the themes of the movie and why everything lead to how it ended. It's not that younger people can't understand or appreciate older films. It's really just on the individual and how they consume media in general. A lot of people of all ages take certain movies, shows, or even songs at face value without thinking into their meaning. They came into this film thinking it was a horror when it is a thriller. They came in with surface level expectations.
36:07 Rob if I crack you in the nose with a baseball bat and dent ya face in...When the ambulance arrives they're going to immediately recognize that the injury is blunt force trauma to the head, and whatever fractures you have in your facial structure. There will be no need to check your chest, stomach, and arms. That's a similar situation here. The injury was on the face, there was no reason to look at the cops' body for other injuries in their mind. Its not unrealistic
Shocking...Rob doesn't understand the escape scene. He missed the ambulance crew WAS checking the vitals on someone they thought had massive brain trauma and in the scene read out his blood pressure to the hospital. Hannibal killing the EMT happened pretty quickly after they left. I know Rob is here to be "edgy opinion guy" but in fulfilling that role he's annoying and always misses obvious things.
Yeah. Rob and Pat don't get it. First and foremost, what would checking the body of the victim accomplish? They are aware that Hannibal is a cannibal. So when Hannibal cut the face off the cop and put it on his own, they assumed that Hannibal did damage to the cops' face. The face is what was supposed to be wounded. They were under the assumption that Hannibal most likely bit the cops' face up or whatever. Hence why they covered it with a towel when the ambulance showed up. No need to check the body when the face is the focus. Little did they know, it was Hannibal under there. They couldn't tell because they assumed the cops' face got injured during Hannibal's attack. It makes sense.
which was lucky, because he could have been quicker about things instead of trying to be quiet and suspenseful. Had he just cocked the gun and pulled the trigger, she would have been dead...or he could have cocked the gun before entering the room with her.
Wrong dude, he knew he had all the time in the world because she was basically helpless in the dark so no rush to pull the trigger, she heard the click and reacted.
Her going into that situation at the end alone, absolutely made sense to the story of her character. All of the parts of her "charm"(?) that made her appealing to everyone, especially to Hannibal, is what made the movie sogreat. . She is passionate, super invested, fearless, innocent, intelligent, naive and eager. It's demonstrated so well in that elevator shot. So, her going in alone speaks to all of her qualities at once.
They did not check the cops vital signs because once Lechter started convulsing, all an act of course, then they knew that had to get him out of there and to a hospital asap. You guys are dense and totally don’t pay attention or are clueless. This movie is a classic and won multiple Academy Awards.
She never saw Hannibal as human. Rob just doesn't understand the movie because he doesn't understand subtleties. She's trying to play him the whole time... Jodie Foster literally won an Academy Award for this, but yeah... Rob's right.. /sarcasm
You guys are going off on the advantage Bill had with night vision on, sure, but he was a chump - he hadn't cocked his weapon yet. Clarisse took the safety off, drew and cocked her weapon way upstairs in the living room, she was ready.
The story is based on the time the FBI asked Ted Bundy to create a profile of the green river killer, when they finally arrested him they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The scene where bill kidnaps Catherine is also inspired by Bundy who would fake having a broken arm and act like he was struggling to get something in his car so women would offer to help him and then he would hit them over the head and push them into the car. The character of Bill was inspired by a few killers like Ed Gein who besides killing 3 people he would dig up recently buried bodies and create things with their parts like a pair of gloves and a lampshade made from skin and furniture made from bones and skulls. I read recently that the actors who play Bill and Catherine actually dated during the making of the movie.
Maybe at their age, they have seen some much different things on tv and the movies that weren’t readily available to some of us, which makes them immune to what we might think as shocking, like Silence of the Lambs. How he got the pen: before Dr. Chilton left Hannibal's cell, he told Barney, "clean him up and get him ready to go". That means that Hannibal would've been taken out of his restraints to go to the showers, grab his towel and clothes to change, giving him time to swipe the pen. When he's in the cage in Memphis, he tells the 2 cops (Pembry and Boyle) "just a minute, please" while he's behind the privacy partition where the toilet is. This means he most likely hid the pen up his ass. He only used the end of the pen to release his handcuffs, but he wrote with it when he left the clue on the map for Clarice. ❤
