- I dive in some of the coldest water in the world. A few times I have had my watch reading 7 degrees c.
In the tropics though its really just Mask + Snorkel + Fins!

If it will be interesting for someone...
In Russia we are using something like Beuchat Elaskin 7mm with built-in hood, same 7mm sox and 3mm gloves. Weight is about 5-7 kg on belt and in collar. Quit comfortable.
Water temperature in deep fresh lakes and quarries is about 6C in summer and 1-2C in winter. Often with thermoclines, where on surface may be 20-25C, 14C on 10-15m and 6C on 20m and more. No so pleasant, but we have no choice ).

Always wondered what I would be missing out on getting a surf suit instead of one made for freediving. Now I know it was a good buy(it was 80% off).
I use a surf suit too. I like it it is easy to put on and get off.
Not sure if it holds my key or not haven't checked, I usually just put it in my diving shoes. Haven't lost it yet.

Great video bro . personally I would add a thermal bottom and heavier gloves . a speedo is great but only for the warmer months .
back to cold water was using 5 mm gloves, 7mm was warmer, but not comfortable for using speargun...
I also use a surf suit (xcel) for freediving. They are easier to attire and modify, a relevant fact especially when you're an amputee like I am.

great video and very intersting for me as i live in ireland so going to buy a wetsuit that is thicker soon i also use the aqualung sphera but the kelp creeps me out. did you ever fine that? thanks
+Ewan Duerden kelp is great man... get down to the bottom where is starts to grow for better freedom of movement, if your swimming with it on the surface is sucks, cant move.
What kind of watch your wearing in this video?
I found open cell warmest. Problem I found was trying to find good size, stupendius amount of weight I need and making the middle leg uncomfortable.

Do you have any suggestions for keeping your lips warmer? Ive been free diving in 3-15 celsius. The only problem I have is that my lips start to hurt after 5 min. Ive been thinking about making some sort of a heated lip guard. Or maybe trying lanolin oil?
Ah, I never heard somebody complain this. But my face hurts big time when first getting it, so I get the idea. How about just a layer of lip balm. You know, the vaseline based stuff for dry lips - cause that stuff is water repellent. Good luck
Great video! You should try Elios custom made heiwa aws wetsuit! Open cell is something you get used to very quickly. After that you will never come back to surfing wetsuit.

I agree, free dive or scuba suits have reduced warmth and flexibility. I use a 4mm rip curl wetsuit.
Hi Dean, I'm very jealous you can get away with 2mm gloves in those temps! Have you tried a modern open cell suit? worth checking out Elios sub. I'd be lucky to last 1 hour in a surf suit, even half that!
+favernoogon I know Elios sub well. One of my earliest videos "Freediving Green Island" I'm in my boardshots, and everyone else was in there latest elios sub smooth skins... over a few days I watched them rip their Ellios to pieces on very sharp volcanic rock green island is made of. That being said - I understand they are warm suits, and that the performance of smooth skin is good... but if its gonna get torn up in the places that I dive, i wouldn't use it. As for opencells that I have worn.... Neptune opencell was my first suit.
I have a wetsuit that is meant for freediving and it is a one piece like that one and it works great and is durable

DUDE! I should have known about surf-suits years ago, I HATE these freediving suits! I have a 5mm suit and I always anticipate with fear the part when I have to wear it. I feel like a penguin inside a condom with it haha!
This surf suit you showed looks exactly like what I need, and you can even take your car keys with you?!

+Loony Guy This is a discontinued model. After the new range was launched - I got in in clearance before it was taken completely off the market. USD 270...... but you are correct the original retail was either 500USD ... that was what I payed for my falcons back in 2011

Have you ever tried spearfishing?....and i agree with you on the open cell i have one, they aren't the most comfortable but keep me warm.
+Ronnie wilson I considered spearing back when I started in 2012, but started I started 100% plant based diet in 2014, so probably wont be taking it up.

Ive watched a lot of your vids Freediver HD - how come I can't remember seeing you in a cold water dive with this surfsuit on? Would you model it? I like models....especially rogue models who dont wear the recommended gear!!

If you are worried about the fragility of the freediving wetsuit, use a wetsuit for spearfishing!! It is much more durable and it really keeps you warm!!

+Gabriel Ribeiro they are not very hydrodynamic... they drag more, as the mouth peices are bulky with their clearance valve, the mouth peice can be flapping around if they have that hose like bendy straw design. The stopper value at the top of the snorkel to prevent water getting in is also useless. Freediving snorkels are simple, more oval in shape, and outline the shape of your head better - they are also very cheap! so just get one!

Are you supposed to use earplugs when freediving?
No. You must equalize.
My friend wore earplugs spearfishing once and he just put them over his ears but after the day when he pulled the out, they had pushed right against his eardrum from dive repeatedly to 20m.

Sure its ok, it can work for freeding. The D6i ads technical scuba diving functions are on top of what the d4i already has. Only scuba/tech divers really need the D6i.. In term of freediving, d4i and d6i are almost the same....
If you can stand to be in the water wearing 5/4/3, surf suit, you can't be in cold water. In Northern California a 7mm two-piece open cell is needed year-round.
I am diving ranges from 7c to around 12c

Aries in 2011/2012 had considered it - mostly through peer pressure. However since early 2014, I'm on a 100% plant based diet.
