    Putting my two cents in here:
    1. Put that patreon out there. You don't have to beg and plead, just a blurb at the end of the video and a link in the description. I bet theres a lot of people (including me) that would love to support RCR through patreon but have no idea that it exists.
    2. I agree with your conclusion that you should include some of the cons of the giveaway car. Personally, I see the giveaway car videos as a mix of an ad and a review. I expect to take it with a grain of salt, but it does seem a little disingenuous when all the other car reviews are busting balls and giving credit where its due, but then I hear mostly just the positive aspects of the giveaway car.
    3. As an avid fan, I think having to deal with the ad and giveaway segments is worth seeing the cool shit RCR can do with those funds. I think its important to put it into the viewers perspective that the giveaways are to fund big events for the channel and help keep the channel as your full-time endeavor, and that they aren't just some cash grab scheme.

    hearing your thought process through the video was reassuring, you seem like you really care about whether or not it might have a negative impact on people. I don't mind the giveaway videos. As you said, it opens new doors for RCR and allows you to keep it going regularly (ha). Thank you for the laughs over the years, I hope everything works out.

    When I worked overnights, I was pretty terminally online. I was all over the weird corners of the internet and would brush against the RCR subreddit. Haven't been there in over a year but they would complain about the giveaway cars constantly. They never put up good excuses to not like them, just that the mugs weren't much to get excited about and the giveaways seemed shady. Yes, you have to have advertisers. Yes, you have to be able to keep this thing going. You were clear about that here and it's the right call.
    I've seen some major creators who do nothing but great, wholesome content get barraged in their comments lately for advertisers, but one piece of advice I must give is to avoid BetterHelp if they approach you. I don't keep up with the drama around it, but people are really soured by them.

    I have no problem with the giveaways. I was leery of this one because you were more negative in the older video, but when you explained it later in the video I no longer had any issue. I don't know if it's a good idea, or even possible, but getting a car for the giveaway that people in general like, but you don't, could be fun. The only example I can think of off the top of my head would be a high spec Jetta.

    Been subbed since the Accord (business) video. I'm glad you're getting to do what you love because of the giveaways. If you love doing this, do it and afford it! I'd rather watch you knowing you've got money to live comfortably. I'd be sad to see you leave RCR behind but would rather that than seeing you be a wage slave for the algorithm. All the best!

  • @marvellousm
    @marvellousm 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I'm glad you did this video, I was feeling bad about the negative comments on the video on Monday. I saw someone call you a sellout and that pissed me off because I know you're not doing this to be greedy, it's getting harder and harder to be a content creator in this day and age. I think you made a good case for why you felt differently about this car vs the Stealth though I don't know if these commenters are even watching all of the way through your videos. But they nevertheless judge your intention on inadequate information which sucks.
    With that in mind I like the idea of bringing up the pros and cons of the cars. Personally, I don't want to win say an older German luxury car because I couldn't afford to maintain them. I also recommend putting these pros and cons fairly early on in the video because as noted above, not everybody is going to watch until the end.
    I entered your first couple of giveaways but had to stop. I had a bit of a "problem" with buying stuff for Prime Driven giveaways, spending money I shouldn't have for the chance to win a car. I have ADHD and so have a severe lack of dopamine which makes me impulsive looking for something that's going to give me some. I had always avoided gambling because I know that could have been a big issue for me, and I ended up doing it via buying shirts and stickers I didn't want to try and win cars I didn't need. I am oversharing now, I realize.
    Please do bring up the Patreon though. Even if you don't have time todo anything with it. I would absolutely have signed up sooner if I'd known about it before today because I would very much like to support you. I've been a fan since the Aztek review and I've loved watching the channel and (and you) grow, you and Roman have given me hours and hours of entertainment and education. Thank you for all you do.

    People are so silly. How do they think any other journalists pay their bills? Advertising departments, how do they work? Advertising departments hire themselves, sell ads, and just so happen to pay journalists cash money, and you can't explain it. Much less so when it's a one man (or woman) operation and that person has to work both ends of the equation. It is truly a mystery of the universe. I don't mind you doing what you have to do in order to pay your bills. You're doing good. Keep on keeping on.

    So...
    I entered a giveaway and I felt a little pressured on the upsell and the lack of a "Hey you didn't win." email. The company said they'd work on that, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. You've earned my trust over the years.
    Also I think some of the cars are a bit counter to the brand of RCR... Like an AMG is going to be a maintenance PIG. And I wouldn't touch a twin turbo BMW for the same reason.The last 4 though have had me tempted.I know not every car is going to be to my personal preference though.
    I'm not the biggest fan of the giveaways. But they're kind of needed. TH-cam isn't how it was before. It's shrinking and you need to branch out.
    Maybe write some gay erotica on the side though? I'd buy that.

    The problem with the giveaways has always been the 10X 100X entries. It makes it a scam as this option is not told up front. Then Justin would text and say only 500 people have entered. Have a set number of entries with the merch purchase and do NOT deviate. Vice Grip Garage gives you an entry for every $5 spent. You could get more merch and go that route. Plus you always give the giveaway cars a tongue bath.

    • @mmmlinux
      @mmmlinux 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah but actual merch would cut in to the profit.

    • @_RiseAgainst
      @_RiseAgainst 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mmmlinux then you charge more to cover the cost just like the coffee mugs. It's possible RCR just doesn't have a big enough market to justify more merch options. I really just think Justin's business model hurts RCR in the long run, but it's super low effort for Regular so I get it.

    • @mmmlinux
      @mmmlinux 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@_RiseAgainst honestly. I’d rather see a raid shadow legend ad instead of these cash grabs. If you want a few bucks directly from your viewers in exchange for essentially nothing then do Patreon. Otherwise, get the money from some big company that has plenty to spare. Or sell actual merchandise. Get little rcr stuffed cars or something actually unique not just rcr label slapped on a mug and drop shipped.

    Pros and Cons, try to relate to other cars for the MSRP when new? Maybe discuss a few different classes of vehicles for the money? You do that a little bit already, but I like the idea of having a spread of things from Fleet HD Trucks to fully pimped Toyota Avalon to consider “practical appliances” to fun toys.

    My only criticism about the giveaway videos is that they are a tad longer than I prefer. But that's a "me" problem. Personally, I have enjoyed watching your channel grow over these last ten(!) years. I hope you can keep this going, and if you have to do giveaways, then so be it.
    Regarding the haters: don't worry about them. You won't be able to please them, and if you do that, your content will sour and you'll hate producing it anyway.
    Try to keep your chin up! I'm hearing more than a little imposter syndrome in your voice. Don't listen to it! That voice lies!

  • @Poorgeniu5
    @Poorgeniu5 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I see no problems with finding a alternative source of revenue because there is no such thing as free lunch. The idea of a 'pros and cons' sections or just being a little more critical is a good one and I'll add that you should make an separate FAQ video about the giveaway or ask Justin to add an FAQ section on his site.
    Other than that, I do have critiques about these giveaways with the main one right off the bat is that I can't drive stick and I would feel very bad if I won then later burn the clutch out or worse.... get into an accident. My second one is that entry cost is kinda high and I would like to see other items like a t-shirt, vinyl stickers, and prints (maybe signed?). Then lastly, I would like to see you branch out to more normal cars or if you want the wild card; non-cars giveaways like a motorbike or even a camper trailer.

    I'd def lean into Patreon more. You can monetize things you are already doing (like video early access costs nothing) and build a relationship with your core fans.
    If you ever wanted to make rent money, I am sure you could actually sell the ability for someone to have their car reviewed. Most media reviewers have that as a purchase or patron tier. I'm sure people would pay 500-1k to get their car on RCR. Could be just as interesting as the giveaway cars.

  • @singlecellshark9734
    @singlecellshark9734 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not sure if you bother reading comments on these videos but I've personally never had an issue with the giveaways. I've even entered like 4 or 5 of them (I may or may not have been heartbroken when I didn't win the AE86 or the S2000). It's another car review from my favorite car channel. I'm genuinely happy regardless of whether you guys shit all over a vehicle or praise it.
    You guys have been doing this for a decade now and I hope this doesn't come off as a criticism but it feels like you guys are still struggling where other car channels I see are these big production type things. And that's not really a criticism on them. I enjoy myself some big productions as well. I guess what I'm trying to say is if the giveaways helps you and Nick to continue what you've been doing, then keep doing them. I love RCR and I just want the best for you guys

    I think a bad car can be cool. The 82 vett is a perfect example when its was said "its not fast but it is fun". My little yota pickup is not fast, or safe, or even good on gas, can't haul more that 1 of my kids, annyoing things keep breaking cause its over 30, but it is fun to drive. Ill be honest, i probably wont buy a $5 mug. That said i plan to keep watching everything you make and ill be joining the patreon as it feels like im more directly supporting you.

This is just entertainment for us, this is your entire life and you need to secure that while still putting out good content. Thats a tough balance but i think you're manageing it well.
    I think the Giveaway's let you spend more time with the cars and explore them more then a 20min drive up the road.

    I don't entirely mind the giveaways, but there IS a problem. A few, really.
    1. Every giveaway car review is relentlessly positive compared to other stuff. Even if there's a specific angle you could take while liking it, it feels safe. It feels like an ad for the car giveaway.
    2. There is no indication from outside the review that that's what it's going to be.
    3. I don't live in a country eligible to win, so to the extent there's anything to get excited about, I feel like I'm watching it from outside. You try to create hype, maybe it's real or maybe it's manufactured, I don't know. But I literally can't participate in it.
    4. By no fault of your own, you're operating in a space that has been cheapened by commercial activity otherwise. Doug's fake excitement in what are now basically ads for cars getting sold on Cars and Bids walked so that your potentially real excitement about cars you actually like could fall FLAT ON ITS FACE.
    Sponsors pay the bills, I wouldn't be that bothered by them. As long as the sponsorship material feels as though it's materially separate from the content. The lack of that with the giveaways is part of what irks me. They feel like they're inseparable from the content despite being a commercial undertaking.
    Giveaways might be more well received if there was some space between the review and the giveaway. Do the review, wait a few months, and then put out an announcement video saying you're now giving away [car]. It's not the ACT of giving the car away that I think anyone would have any issue with; it's the direct proximity to content about it.
    Now, with all of that said. I didn't know you had a Patreon. I have now joined it.

    The give aways seems to be a means to and end, are no different from ads, sponsors, and I would agree are better than shilling for mobile games and VPNs.
    Pros and cons would be good and talking about bad things is okay as almost no car is perfect. I also don't see anything wrong with doing a Regular Cars Reviews style review, part of the point of your review style is your humour, and people who don't get that and think you're just craping on the car for no reason must not get your style. Also think of Ed Boleans point on automotive masacism, that some of the bad points of cars is what makes them enduring. Repeating a car can be interesting because you can get a different variant of the car and also gives opportunity for people who really like that model car to win again.

    I don't mind the giveaway videos. But I do wish that there was something in the video title or thumbnail to differentiate them from regular reviews. A year from now, if I'm thinking about buying a 3000GT VR-4, it would help to know if a video is a genuine honest review or an ad.

    Hey Brian, I rarely comment at all but I've been around since basically the beginning, when the title cards used to have music and little clipart animations. I'm sorry that some people have been insulting you over the giveaways. That's never the approach I would take, but if you're asking for genuine input from us then I have to say that I've been feeling down about the giveaways for a while now. I do 100% understand why you do them, and I don't hold it against you because I'd probably do the same thing in your shoes, but it brings me down as a fan to see this thing I like have to bend and cater to a higher power in order to survive. I don't have a solution, but that's just how I've been feeling about the channel overall. It's like being a Gallows fan but then Frank Carter comes out with Pure Love. Maybe that's not a great example but I think it's been obvious to some of us that you've been put into a predicament and have had to change some things, and we all really like you so we hate to see you put in this predicament, and it's sad that this thing we like has lost a little of it's edge. FWIW, some of the videos you've made where you ripped on cars the most, have made me want them that much more. We love things for their flaws. You have a fantastic way of highlighting, explaining, and making fun of things and I think if you treated the giveaway cars the same way you would treat a dodge avenger or a chevy hhr, your specific fanbase would react positively.

    I would classify you a lot closer to comedy/standup/literary stuff (that goes over my head most times) more than a hard hitting journalist. (the Roman docs are clearly a different beast and that is obvious to anyone) Anybody buying the older cars you review should lean more on a pre purchase inspection from a good mechanic than general trends as even Toyotas can be ridden hard and put away wet. You are hilarious and if you had to put on a sponsor hat for a minute or two for whatever product I am sure all the adults in the room will understand and the trolls will troll regardless of how much you bleed. Anybody who has owned any kind of car especially in today's market understands exactly how good any under $50 K let alone $50 purchase will have follow up costs. $50 for yard art that might run more than once is a heck of a deal let alone for something that might be entertaining. Being in Canada I can't play but as others have mentioned emphasizing a patreon or coffee fund option might be a better for those of us on a little tighter budget but who love your stuff.
