  • We're testing our limits to see how many miles we can RV in 24 hours. However, we find ourselves regretting that decision...
As full time RVers, we can usually travel 300-400 miles in a single day, but today we're attempting to go 1,000 miles down the Alcan before our timer runs out!

Wow! I wish I could have the energy to do that. My husband and I are in our 60's and retired so we just putt putt everywhere we go in our motorhome. We have a rule of three's: No more than 300 miles driving in one day, at the campground by 3pm, and staying at least 3 nights in a campground. 😆🤣 Happy and safe travels!

As an older traveler I have all but sworn off driving at night as a general rule. Wildlife, drunk drivers and limited services increase the risk factors, but that's just my thoughts. 😊

Yes, I think it’s important for the co-pilot to stay awake and start a conversation when things get boring to keep the driver alert. You can download an audiobook (from various sources) to listen to but you have to keep your mind on the road.

At 8:30 PM one evening we got a call from a jail far far away. It was our 18-year-old daughter. I got in the car (solo) and started driving. Thought I would stop after four hours to sleep. Instead drove 1400 miles straight. Spent two hours posting her bond. Drove her 340 miles back to college. I did that in 28 hours having missed one nights worth of sleep. Still waiting for a thank you from her but it’s only been 3 1/2 years. Thankfully, she’s learned a lot since then and we’re proud of her post stupid behavior. PS- pick good friends.

@@ATLJonathanH She has a history of befriending kids with really sad stories such as having a parent who abandoned them or is an alcoholic, kids who have been raped in their past (whether while dating or by family), homelessness, suicidal ideation, drug dependency, depression. Because of her own mental health struggles she wants to rescue others. That led her to a one month friendship with someone she knew sold all kinds of drugs on campus. My apologies for the explicit details…there is a lot of hurt out there. Anyway, wrong place, wrong time. Got arrested (in a car) for possession of the other persons boatload of drugs. Prison looked almost certain. Eventually learned she can’t rescue others and frankly she saw so many people (in Colorado) who have no plan except to get high and work a dead end job. It has been a long road. Missed 5 semesters of college but she was resilient and did not choose bitterness. Life humbled an arrogant stubborn young person and she is actually grateful because it made her a better person. Parental tip- If you have kids never burn a bridge. Never say hurtful words that they can’t unhear. When they are at their lowest don’t remind them that they screwed up again. They know it. Tell them what you like about them, that you love them and that you won’t abandon them.

We had a family member injured in a vehicle accident in Rapid City SD. I told them we would be there the next day. We left in our motorhome at 6PM from Seattle WA and arrived the next day at 8:15PM local time. 1242 miles. Took three days to get back but we had a patient on board.

In 1996, my Grandmother passed away in Missouri and we left WA State. We overnighted near Boise and then drove 21 hours through tornadic storms with a 6 week old baby girl. We now live in Missouri. In 2021, we left at 7:30 at night for Pensacola and drove 14 hours overnight plus stoppage. We were a lot older and it was hard as we were hung over the next day. No advantage except no traffic. Great video!

A couple of things, I have 2 vehicles I tow with. One is a F350, it has a 36 gal tank plus a 100 gal tank in the back that I plumbed in to the tank, my f250 short bed has a 26 gal tank with a 62 gal external tank plumbed in. With the 350 I can do about 900 miles, the 250 about 650 ish. I have driven 1500 miles in 23.5 hrs, but I was alone. No wife and no pets. When they are with me I avg stops about every 4 hrs. The advice I was given years ago to make miles is keep the doors shut and keep moving, but I’m not in such a rush to do that anymore. Have full time rv’d for the last 17 yrs with my 40’ 5th wheel and have learned being in a hurry usually brings problems. Really enjoy your vids and enjoy watching you guys discover the world. Have fun, good luck!

We drove over 800 miles back in May when we left West Virginia late due to a trailer tire valve issue, but wife read the news after we left about the major Northern Lights event possible that night. Too cloudy until Chicago, but then too much city lights to see the Aurora. We had to go almost to Iowa on I-80 to get away from city light pollution to see the Aurora, but we did at 3am in the morning. It was worth it.

Some things i learned as a OTR driver. Make yourself uncomfortable. Open the windows, crank up the air whatever it takes to make it uncomfortable so you don't doze off. Crack up the tunes and jam out, that helps alot, Or get into a conversation with someone. A quick stop to jog around the fuel stop is a nice wake up as well. Naps usually do more harm than good for me.

If you were on a motorcycle, 1000 miles in 24 hours is called the "Iron Butt challenge". Good job of setting you own challenge and completing it. Traveling long distances in vehicles is a challenge for most people. I was a truck driver in the military and when I got out. The longest drive I did in the military was roughly a week while in Iraq. We drove as a team, 2 people, and we only stopped to load and unload vehicles and refuel. I don't remember how many miles we drove but it was a lot and we all were exhausted.

We were in our truck, no RV. My Mom was in Vermont with my sister and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Mom was going down faster than expected, so we went to be with her. We play the alphabet word game on long drive days. Start with A - find a word that starts with the letter, has to be at least 3 letters and no abbreviations, can be on billboards, side of trailers, road signs, ect. Once u find a word for the letter, move on to the next letter. Have fun with “X” and “Z”. It’s hard to do at night tho.

First- Victoria, you need to learn to drive that rig!
You never want to be stranded or feel helpless if Craig is injured or ill.
I’ve driven every rig we’ve owned from towables to 45’ Class A and long travel days are much easier if you can switch off.
As older folks who are full time, we tend to meander these days.
But a death in the family necessitated a marathon run from Arizona to Wisconsin last year at Christmas in our Class A. 2100 miles in 3 1/2 days.
We are 67 and 81. It wouldn’t have been doable if I didn’t help drive.
Our longest day was by choice a few years ago- 720 miles. The stars aligned with good weather, light traffic (even through Atlanta) and personal energy. We’d intended to stop half way, but we just kept going, lol.

I enjoy your channel a lot. I drove a car from SC to NY several times (900 miles) and liked to do it in one day. That was when I was young (1967) and there were no interstates so it would take about 20 hours. Also drove a Ford Pinto from SC to CA in three days one time, driving 18-20 hours each day. It really seemed easier than spreading it out over 5 days which we did on the way back. But, that said, with our motorhome we like to travel less than 400 miles and the stay at least 3 days exploring the area and then do it again..

Impressive time pulling a 5th wheel! The biggest key for me as a hotshot driver was speed..70 mph plus..and traveling alone. (Dog doesn't count) Also I had dual tanks so I could go 650-700 miles nonstop. My best run was Portland Oregon to Colorado Springs hauling a car trailer. 1300 miles in 24 hours.

LOL I never thought much about what we do without phone/wifi connection but I know we can drive quite a while in silence. If there’s daylight I review our progress in the road atlas and give updates. We talk about random stuff. We’re old retired people who grew up without technology.

Meridian, Mississippi to Twenty-Nine Palms, California took approximately 25.5 hours BUT that was WELL over the speed limit most of the time. Also drove from Birmingham, Alabama to Las Vegas, Nevada (1660 miles) in 26.5 hours non stop [Well over the speed limit most of the time]. It's not fun... I'm not young enough to do that anymore. It's not worth it. Enjoyed the episode. Stay Awesome! < fist pump >

We left Mt Rushmore, drove through Badlands National Park, then straight home to Cincinnati (close to 1100 miles) in 24 hours about 10 years ago. Of course, we weren’t towing anything, but that was with stops ONLY for gas/food, and by Indianapolis, Kyle couldn’t see straight anymore, so Emily took the last hour or so… NEVER AGAIN!!! 😂

When we were in our 20s, before we had kids, we thought it was a good idea to drive to Reno with another couple. We drove 550 miles, gambled and saw a show, slept a little and drove 550 miles back. I cried a little when we had to drive back because I did not want to get back in our sedan. One person did all the driving.

We swapped out our 34 gallon Ford fuel tank for an aftermarket 60 gallon which allows us to go a “normal” day without stopping. We of course stop for bathroom or food breaks, but gives us the freedom for price, ease of access or other reasons to pass stations. It does impact payload capacity of the truck if the tank is full by 170 lbs of additional cargo. I don’t always fill up all the way, but the option is there.

The further and longest we've traveled is about 700 miles in 12 hours. That was years ago when we had to get home to go into work. You are blessed you can work on the road.

We did 662 miles in 12 and a half miles this year, 90% good roads.
It was at the end of our 11 day vacation. We were in New Orleans at the French Quarter RV , great place for location. We left on Saturday morning at 8am and got home to Tulsa at 8:30 pm.
Mainly did it so we could wake up at home Sunday morning and not be getting home Sunday afternoon.
At 61 , I don't do it usually. We like our 6 hour max days.

My tip on driving long boring distances is to place the phone about eye-level, to the left of my line of site (near the A pillar) and put it in landscape mode so that I can watch/listen to TH-cam videos without really taking my eyes off the road. While I admit this isn't really safe, I make sure that I only do it on interstates with not much traffic around and never in heavy traffic or city traffic.

When I was much younger between 20-30 yrs old (I'm 44 now), I lived in Denver and would drive back home to West Virginia twice a year. It was 1,336 miles from doorstep to doorstep and I would complete the trip in exactly 24 hours (give or take 15 minutes). I would only stop for gas and an occasional drive-through for dinner. The rest of the time was spent listening to music, thinking about my future, etc. Looking back, I would not recommend this much of a distance without sleep because I remember experiencing a few minor problems. I never fell asleep while driving, however your reaction time is significantly reduced because you're so tired. Upon arriving in West Virginia, I would sleep for 2-3 hours so I could function, then I would spend the rest of the day with family. If I had to do another 1,336 mile trip at my age now, I would have to plan several days and a few hotel rooms.
Looking back, I remember these trips being the greatest time of my life. Once I realized that I didn't have to complete the drive within 24 hours, I started taking different routes to see new places. I wasn't pulling an RV but I drove a Suburban so I had plenty of room to stretch out in the back and sleep for a few hours. I would also take a small cooler with some snacks and drinks, and I thought I was on top of the world. I loved these trips and I would plan them for weeks. New routes, new towns, new scenery. I really miss those days...
