As an American, I am disgusted by what my government has done by trying to contain Russia and put missile interceptors and weapon systems on the Russian border in Ukraine and have Ukraine join NATO even at the risk of war. I think that Putin is 100% correct to be concerned and to respond the way he did.

Russia never applied to join NATO. Putin was once asked if he would join NATO and his response was, "Sure, if Russia is placed in charge and we get to bypass the normal required acceptance vote" That is the entire extent of the "Russia asked to join NATO and was rejected" joke.
