Wow, Octavia Spencer really exemplifies the old adage, there are no small parts. Her acting is almost a distraction when compared with the other actors. She doesn’t just say her lines but commits facial and body language along with superb timing. She definitely raises the bar.

Yeah but tbf it was the wrong situation since all she did was open a room with slot machines to make money to support herself and her family so one could argue this was a bad way to do it. Plus she lost her house and most of her money so Connie more or less deserved a break after dealing with that.

    • @galinabrack6057

      @berniethecat8839
Gambling is extremely addictive. People often and up loosing control, which leads to huge financial losses. Which leads to
      1. poverty, not rarely child poverty as the addicted people are part of a family, and elder poverty. This can have lifelong consequences such as mental health, education, physical health, etc. Bad enough on a personal level, but that stretches the countries social system and increases tax waste. Additionally, poverty and its consequences increases the danger of living through traumatic events like rape due to loss of savety features (e.g. loss of a home).
      2. Mental health issues such as depression or stress related illnesses. These can lead to further physical illnesses such as strokes, as well as to a worsening of the addiction. On a country level, this decreases mental health services availability for other types of patients, destabilizing the health system and country infrostructure, and of course increases financial burden on the health system.
      3. Social issues, such as the loss of a social circle like family members. This can lead to mental health problems (see above), further addiction (worsening of the existing one or another addiction such as an opiod addiction).
      4. Other addictions, such as opiod addictions, which can worsen the financial situation and have significant health effects. Pretty much leading to all the problems on the list, as well as increasing the persons chance of living through traumatic events such as being raped.
      5. Criminal behaviour and charges, further exacerbating their financial and social problems. Additionally, this increases the countries costs for criminal systems such as prisons and lawyers, and therefore increases taxes.
      6. poor job performance, frequent absences, or even job loss. The stress and distraction caused by gambling can undermine productivity, leading to demotion, unemployment, or a damaged professional reputation on a personal level, and economic losses on the country level.
      9. Suicidal tendencies. The despair and hopelessness associated with gambling addiction, especially when combined with any of the other points above, greatly increases a persons suicidal tendencies at any level of the tendency, from the pure frequency of death related thoughts, to the actual action and anything in between.
If we add that these individuals are parts of families, there is a lot of childhood trauma caused by this, leading to developmental damages.
To sum it up, Meemaw did something very bad with a lot of consequences for her clients, neighbours, city, and country.

3:58 I love the fact that like Mary (but to a stricter degree) Connie’s probation officer is finally making her face ACTUAL consequences. Connie complains so much about how ‘unfair’ the amount of community service she has to do is but the truth of the matter is she got the BEST possible outcome of being arrested. She COULD have gone to jail but people were willing to give her a shot.
You’d think she’d gain some humility after losing her home but nope, it took getting arrested for that to happen 😆
While I know Connie has never given a damn about rules, it’s gotten to a degree where she’s become unlikeable because she’s stopped thinking about how it affects other people - Georgie didn’t even want her to get a roulette table for the gambling room but she was willing to risk that just for the sake of money alone (& I know she had to raise money to rebuild her house but it was still selfish).
To be honest, Connie has been acting more & more like she’s so untouchable purely for the fact she believes she can get away with murder due to her age & it’s is SO nice to see her being knocked down a few pegs 😌

Fun fact, the first 20 seconds of this video are all of the screen time that Missy gets in this episode. That's the best thing about this episode IMO.
The fact that Missy was excited about paternity testing is unbelievable. It implies that she's been having unprotected sex. Why else would you care about paternity testing?
0:18 LOL! I'm going to miss Sheldon. Only 2 more weeks and after that, no more new Sheldon material ever again.
0:39 No, Mary never agreed to anything.
0:43 Your moon pie isn't the villain here.
0:59 Good for Mary. On the other hand, it was also hypocritical of her to say that. She lies all the time.
1:19 Um, why would you think that YOU decide what counts around here?
1:50 Ummm.... you told her that you that you were working 2 jobs and that was why you were rarely at home for Mary and her siblings. You didn't raise her to be cool, in fact you did very little to raise her at all.
Mee Maw used to be one of my top 3 favorite characters, below only Sheldon and Dr. Sturgis. For the first 4 season, I really liked her because she was so good to Sheldon (except for the spanking, but if Sheldon can forgive her for that than so can I), Missy, and Georgie. In some ways it seemed like she was a better parent than Mandy and Georgie. When she bought the laundromat/casino, that was the beginning of the decline of her character, and her has mostly gone downhill ever since. Okay, she did give Mandy a place to live and they named the baby after her. Nonetheless, I don't like people who believe they shouldn't have to follow the law.

As the show winds down, there are not many more chances to use Paige. Boy, was this a missed opportunity. In "Gifted," Octavia was essentially Paige's mom. Not her real mom, of course, but her real mom was dead and Octavia lived next door, so Octavia pretty much became Paige's mom. They could have worked that into this show. That movie is probably how McKenna got the role on this show to begin with (I have no proof of that claim but the movie came out in 2017 and her first appearance on this show was in 2018 so it's a logical conclusion to come to) and this episode was a chance to show us Octavia's role in Paige's life. Instead, they made Octavia a parole officer and no sign of Paige in this episode. Missed opportunity.

    • @bluebird4086

Instead of the Georgie/Mandy storylines, which they could have transferred into their new series, they should write a conclusion the Paige and final emotional moments between Sheldon and his dad. I hope we get at least the latter in the final episodes. And like in the show Missy seems to be forgotten by the writers. She doesn't seem to have important roles anymore.
