  • WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT AND LANGUAGE. In 2008, xenophobic violence swept through South Africa at an alarming rate. In 2015, it happened again. Most recently, in August 2019, South Africans again targeted foreigners, their businesses and lives coming under threat. Borders Episode 2 looks at the lives of migrants and refugees living in South Africa, and the dangers they face trying to find sanctuary from persecution.

This is so weird to me. A few years ago, as an African person I was defending and fighting for the people in South Africa in front of UN panels and the World Bank who wanted to reduce/re-evaluate development funding. Countless calls, interviews, disturbing my supervisors day and night because “there must be another way” as given that I KNOW that Africans in my position are very few, I see myself and an African first, and I have to fight for Africa AS A WHOLE, because when I tell you these people don’t care, believe me, these people could NOT care less about what happens on the African continent. Strange to think that I could enter South Africa and they will still see me as a foreigner and call for my head because of it. Very interesting.

Simple reason is there are MORE PEOPLE than OPPORTUNITIES in South Africa. Why can other countries in Africa not fix themselves, why do people have to go to over-crowded South Africa, it's a lie that SA is rich, it has no more resources than the DRC or other African countries, it simply has a more "Western"-approach (Parliament & Administration based on UK system with Republican elements, education & formal business model is UK based/Capitalist), in its management, and has more different races, that is the only difference, but it has just as much poverty, a bigger middle-class & slightly more elites...the middle-class of all races makes SA better, but the rest of Africa can get fixed or can fix itself.

@@gysgijsbers4202 I mean, most large countries in Africa are overcrowded though. The entirety of Africa is resource rich, it is true that with better management no one in Africa would experience such extreme poverty, I also don't know if I agree that having a "Western" approach is a good thing (you would have to explain that one to me) I live and work in this West, and their approach is waaaay too problematic for African countries to succeed by copying it.

@@gysgijsbers4202 The truth is, I empathise with South Africans and I can understand where they are coming from, but I don't think blaming foreigners is going to solve anything, because that is only a symptom of a much wider issue. Good conversation though.

@@inyeekaribi4913 tx for response, I added Western approach in brackets...remember we were a Dutch colony for +-150 years (Cape Colony), then under British rule for another +-150 years...that is the foundation of our economic & administrative model...never Communist or Socialist, allthough we are leaning towards the latter over the past 30 years under the ANC, with high unemployment & social grant system.

@@gysgijsbers4202 Yes, you are very correct. I know a lot of African governments/ Freedom Fighters tried to adopt more Socialist models (SA included as you have just mentioned), but if they are just copying Socialism as it developed in Europe how would that work? Isn't still a "Western" approach? I haven't seen African countries trying to develop their own economic models (some may argue that it has all already been done)?

The killing of Africans in RSA must be stopped now, I seriously call upon those who participate in such activities to have mercy and reconsider their strategy for whatever mission that they are pursuing.
As South africans we know nothing about war, I'm also worried about the amount of crime which happens almost every single day. However let's not compare that crime statistics to war, I simply mean that by killing innocent Africans is like we are asking for war of which I know that we know nothing about. Unlike most African countries, our struggle heroes avoided to lead us to a war.
Please stop killing innocent Africans because our constitution says a person is innocent until until proven guilty within a court of law.

Makes me think maybe these people in South Africa are not part of BANTU family maybe some other grand tribe
But this is not BANTU BEHAVIOR

Crime in South Africa does not discriminate. *Racism, Sexism, Xenophobia/Afrophobia/Nigeriaphobia* are all deep-seated traits that are difficult to transform, the only measure we have is the law, & unfortunately, the law is failing everyone. If you are running away from violence, you will only find more of it here, I suggest people run to *Europe* or *America,* maybe you will find peace there...

The problem is that so many people think of running away all the times. Some of the migrants are legit, they really wish to integrate and to call home and respect the new country. However, other play the role as refugees of their own problems and only beg and demand from the host country an easy solution for their very complicated problems.
I usually say: America fought their own civil war to change their law, France, England, Russia, China, all had civil wars. The outcome of such brutal civil wars was a committement from all sides to come along and deal with their differences. I think this is going to be next stage in some African nations, maybe South Africa is one of those countries. The frustration is building up, it's a matter of time... Either DNC changes or a new government comes into place, otherwise this will continue its escalation...
