This is such a helpful video. Answered all my questions (and its not the first YT vid i watched... just the best). I live in Zone 5a so I have to be particularly attentive to my more tropical container plants. I had a Sweet Bay cutting years ago, but I messed up and the little lovely didn't make it thru winter. 😢 Trying again with a more stronger and supposedly compact variety. This time I intend to succeed! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

It gives me an idea to replace my akebia, which definitely doesn't like to be in a pot, I think I don't manage watering it well...(either too much or not enough..🤔.). Hi Sophia! I'm really happy that you enjoyed this video! Akebia is very pretty! I have never grown it, so no idea how it performs in pots 🤔. But Laurel is super easy to grow, it's one of those plants that you can leave and go for a two-week vacation and it will still look great when you come back 😅 Wishing you a nice week!
@@17m2garden We have 3 or 4 days in the upper 90s...then back to 101-103 for a few days. My plants are doing great...daily watering for the garden. I have harvest daily...there's a lot we can grow in the heat. Since we regularly see 100-110 in the summer this heatwave hasn't caused me to skip a beat...even at 57.🙂 I enjoy gardening challenges! I'm learning a lot...love to learn. I know the UK is seeing a heatwave this weekend. What about y'all?
thats so true about potting mix being bad, this year i finally got the hang of preparing my own mixes 😁 i buy bagged humus rich compost, mix with worm castings, vermiculite and fine pumice stone. i wonder if i should add clay for iron?? ive never seen this kind of application in a custom soil mix.
These are some great ingredients 👌! Your plants will definitely appreciate it! Generally you don't need to add worm casting, humus and compost all of that at once, because these are all great sources of organic matter on their own. Clay has very small particles so it has awesome nutrient and water retention, which comes handy, but be careful not too add too much cause then the soil can compact easily. I like to buy good quality potting mix such as Lightmix by Plagron which already has perlite and warm castings in it and then to either mix it with soil when planting trees and shrubs (that's what I used here) or to add compost for extra nutrients and water retention ☺️

I'd like to train it into topiary but it seems harsh to cut off all the off shoots, they are thriving, just not into the shape I'd like! In fact my topiary olive tree is also growing a tiny off shoot!!
Hi! Thank you! Oh I understand what you mean, with topiaries and standards you need to keep up with pruning to keep them looking neat and this is only for aesthetics and not for the health of the plant... But cutting off all the side shoots and suckers will promote new healthy growth above 🙂🌿
Hello! Your bbalcony garden looks fantastic. I just bought a bay seeedling and its leaves are turning brown at the edge. I think I overwatered it. I moved it to a sunnier place and put it in a well draining potting mix in a bigger pot,and watering less frequently. Any advice?
Hi, thank you very much! It's good that you repotted it into a well-draining potting mix and into a larger container. Give it some time to acclimate now. They don't like wet soil, so water well, but let the soil dry out before watering again.
Hi this is great thank you ! I have a new tree that I’ve had for 3 months and recently we had a really hot spell and the leaves have gone a bit brown :( I’ve watered it but I’m nervous it will die ! Any tips ?
Hi! I'm glad this video was helpful to you! When weather conditions are extreme, damage is often inevitable, but take care of your plant and it should recover. Place it somewhere where it will be protected from the afternoon sun and water regularly (but allow the soil to dry out between watering). You can also pinch off damaged leaves. Good luck 🤞.
Hey! Yes, some people living in colder climates grow them outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter (they are hardy to zone 8). You can also grow it indoors all year round as long as you place it in front of a south-facing window for optimal light levels or under a growlight ☺️

I use a cake spatula to loosen the soil when I repot,makes repotting a breeze
