I get emotional every time I hear this song. It's been a part of my life for 45ish give or take years, and even now in my 60s it still makes me get up and dance.
Guitarist Allen Collins, who plays that epic guitar solo at the end of Freebird, wrote the music to this song when he was just 17 or 18 years old, and all these years later it's still considered one of the most iconic songs in rock history. The music written by a teenager and the lyrics by a high school drop out lead singer in Ronnie Van Zant who was a musical genius who never wrote anything down on paper. He always kept the lyrics to Skynyrd's songs in his head, often proclaiming "if a song ain't remembering then it ain't worth playing."
I saw them perform this at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. I believe it was 1977, so I was 16. Approximately 50,000 people in attendance. I was 30 feet from the stage. The lineup that day was Dickey Betts & Great Southern (From the Allman Bros. Band), J. Giles Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Headliner was Peter Frampton.
William Muntzer I had to reply because my older brother Earl " who has since passed" was at the very concert in Philly and reading your comment and listening to this song, I saturated the keyboard with tears and I remember him coming home that day and telling me about the concert " WOW the old JFK stadium and when I was old enough, my brother took me to see The WHO at the JFK stadium in " 82" an era that has gone bye GREAT MEMORIES!!
Believe it or not, the drummer on the studio version is different than the live version you heard before. Bob Burns was the drummer here and Artimus Pyle was on the live version. Also, the live performance featured Steve Gaines on fills whereas the studio version featured Ed King. The rest of the band was the same. Glad you enjoyed the song, it blew everyone away when it was first released. Interestingly, this song did not initially make the airwaves because it was too long. Studio executives insisted the band cut the song down to 4-5 minutes but the band refused to yield. I for one am glad they were so stubborn.
Here in the states, we call it Southern Rock. It has a bit more soul than more of the northern rock bands. The bass is really thumping in this in parts, too, which goes along with the drumming.
I was thinking, since I was young when all the music you react to was first out, and this is your first time like it is new, kind of makes me stay young. Thank you.
All time favorite and the guitars are always awesome. If you want to see a live performance, look for the one in Oakland, CA. I was there, it was awesome!
Larry Junstrom and Gary Rossington were the last two surviving members of the original 5 Larry Junstrom passed away couple of months ago Gary is the sole survivor from the original 5
I was at that live show they have on you tube, it was here in Oakland 1977, great show, but you're right, after the second album they changed drummers, and the drummer Bob Burns we just heard on the record was a much more fitting drummer for the band than his replacement was.
That song will wear your brain out!Does anybody realize how hard that song is to play?Guess that's why no other band tries to cover it!Free bird is a full concert in one song!
You might enjoy a live video of a Lynyrd Skynyrd song you've already reacted to, "You Got That Right." It was recorded on July 13, 1977 at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The song was written by the two lead singers on the song, Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, both of whom died in the plane crash three months later. This video is licensed to TH-cam, so there shouldn't be any problem using it. By the way, the entire concert video is also available on TH-cam.
People really need to appreciate how muscle shoals really put together a long list of great songs and help the careers of a long list including Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The best guitar solo there ever was or will ever be. No if and about it. The live version is even better. The first time I ever heard it I was totally blown away and I still get that feeling today.
One of THE great songs. Gotta say though, the lack of ppl reacting to the BEST VERSION OF ANY LIVE SONG EVER (Fox Theater/Play It Pretty For Atlanta) is making me think that too few people actually know about it OR, it’s a magnet for the TH-cam blocking algorithms...
@@Tuesdays_Gone no, sadly. there are two versions of the Fox Theater live set recorded but neither are video. the 1st is the version that's on Platinum & Gold AND One More From The Road & the 2nd is from the *2nd* night in Atlanta (Ronnie actually says Play It Pretty For Atlanta BOTH nights - #1 is slightly better imvho) which they put on the 25th Anniversary Remaster of One More From The Road. so there are two versions, one of which is slightly superior, but none exist on film.
@@Tuesdays_Gone agree Totally the version they play on the one more from the road album still to this day is my favorite I still play that in my car :)
Arguments from people who say this song and “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin are number 1and 2 of all time.I agree either way. They really worked hard for what they achieved.Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant predicted he would not live to be 30 years old...he died in a plane crash at 29.

greatest of the Southern Rock bands and this song is an Anthem in the SOUTH

ReetaR He was a great drummer indeed
Ed played bass on Free Bird. Gary played rhythm and Allen played the guitar solo.

Yeah my guess is the first 3-4 minutes was him explaining his need to fly as free as a bird and then the solo his him in flight. Sounds good to me.

If I remember right I think like 3 or 4 guitars were playing in this song. Just great
Ranked the number 2 rock and roll song of all time....behind “ Stairway to Heaven”.
FREE BIRD!
Lynyrd Skynyrd had many hits most notably Sweet Home Alabama.

It's surprising that very few people have reacted to this guitar solo...it's as if one day they sat in the studio and decided to become immortal
That guitar has such a whisky sound to it.
should check out the live 1977 performance of this song, one of the best live performances ever.
