I learned fishing, hiking and survival skills from him. He gave me this Huntsman when he was diagnosed with a memory disorder. He has experienced many adventures with the Huntsman. I'll take good care of it!
I like Victorinox, a lot. I also had the huntsman for a long time outdoors, but then my wife saw how versatile this blade is (i am a big fan of Felix Immler, the man who can do everything with a Vic), so guess what, now my wife has a huntsman, and i have none, lol. In urban environment i carry the handyman now, and outdoors the rangergrip 79, and this thing is such a beast. I almost never carry fixed blades and long saws since i have it, exept may be i am for more than an overnighter out in the field.
Can't go wrong with SAKs. Your Huntsman's a bit unusual as it has nylon scales. It needs a bit of a clean though. I just put mine in warm (not boiling) water with washing-up liquid, leave it to soak, and scrub tools and the insides with a washing up brush, or you could use an old toothbrush. After that let it dry, and if you want to, put oil or spray like WD40 in it, but honestly you don't need to, in fact that can attract dust and dirt. They don't rust easily. Cheers & greetings from the UK.
Thanks for the comment! I think my Huntsman is pretty old. I was child when my grandfather used it on our fishing trips in the 90s. He gave it to me because he knew I needed it more these days. Actually I have already cleaned it. However after cleaning with warm water and dish soap I had to lubricate the joints with multitool oil. It works like a dream now! I'll take good care of it.
How do you find the rangergrip 79? Is it heavy or hard to carry it in the pocket? My favourite sak is the tinker small the hiker the spartan and fieldmaster. I have been contemplating buying a large one like your rangergrip but would it go with my collection of 91mm and 84mm? Would it look out of place? It looks unreal,, almost like a hunting knife.
It's actually my favorite Victorinox knife at the moment. I think it's not too heavy to carry in the pocket (weight: 167 g). Of course, it depends on the user, but I think it would be certainly a good addition with smaller knives. In Finland, we usually use quite large "puukko" knives. That's why I'm also used to using bigger knives. In my opinion, this is still a moderate size and not too big. One option would also be the 111mm models from Victorinox like the Forester Wood in this video. These two options could also be really good: Victorinox Trailmaster Grip or Locksmith if you want to use the blade with one hand.
Take really good care of the Huntsman you got from your grandfather!
Great SAK, and probably a great man.
Memories, you know...

I’m a big fan of the rambler, nice and small, but with just the right amount of extra functionality with the screwdriver/bottle opener
Rambler is a good choice. I think it's better than Escort because of the extra functionality.
