- Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
In this episode, the Skye Lifers head out to the local pub for the first time with new puppy Nori. Will he be the pub dog we hoped he would or will he be a wee nuisance..?!
Willie deals with the aftermath of Sarah's recent incident in Yolanda the Landrover Defender and we attempt to tackle the ongoing damp problems in our old stone cottage.
Plus, we reflect back on our first 8 weeks with Nori and see how far he has come.

I can tell right away that your fan in the bathroom isn't strong enough simply because we had the same problem, the fan was not fit for purpose apparently there are different strengths it goes on size of bathroom and on the strength of shower, our new one is fab as it works all the time and goes extra when switched on with the light. More to the the bathroom is no longer freezing because it's totally enclosed
You should get leaf litter guard mesh for your gutters! It’s cheaper than professional jobs but just as good. A long strip of flexible plastic mesh and you just bend it into the gutter so it wedged under the inside edges and sits up like a mound shape. It stops lots of leaves collecting in the gutters. You’ll still have to check and clean the gutters but not anywhere near as much! The mesh is really cheap and comes in a roll.
That pup update was wonderful, I enjoyed it tremendously, especially seeing the photos. 💕🥰💕 People don’t realize getting a puppy is like having a baby, less sleep, short walks, constant diligence. (That is if you are doing it properly which you are.) Well done both of you.💕👏💕👏💕

I used to have a Bassett hound. When she wanted to go swimming, she'd wade in and as soon as her ears floated out to the sides of her head, she'd turn around and go back to shore! Very funny! Have a good week!

The two dogs sitting side by side with their cute look at me look is adorable. Nori sure gives Jack a hard time and Jack just takes it in his stride. Another lovely vlog. That "exhaust" fan in the bathroom needs replacing with a unit that is at least 20x20cm or you are flogging a dead horse! Nori has really gone ahead in leaps and bounds and Jack is a really good influence on him. Hopefully the weather will improve for you very soon so that you can get out a bit more. You need some Thai weather there. 39 and 40 degrees this week.

Nori is so big now! We paint anti condensation paint under paint instead of undercoat where needed and those tubs that catch water on the window sills help a bit too.

Oopsie Daisy Sarah, poor Yolanda. Good that it was a quick fix and minor bump. Nori sure is growing fast, love that he and Jack are.getting on so well, they have lovely parents who care for them.
I use chicken wire ( small holes ) over the drain pipes to stop leaves etc get in them. The netting from oranges, I put over the top of the down pipe and covers of the drains, to stop leaves etc get in them

Was laughing at Nori with the tree he wanted to drag along, just what my Border terrier does!
The 'wall incident' was entirely down to Sarah's artistic eye subconciously noticing that stone in the wall was out of place and needed a slight adjustment.
I'd highly recommend the Werner 12 in 1 ladders - very flexible and stable but hardly take up any space when not in use. I use them regularly to check and clear the gutters on my cottage.
We had exactly the same problem with extractor fans in our bathroom - we’re in a new build and the builder just told us it met building regulations and to open a window, which didn’t do much good because of the wind and humid coastal climate.
We replaced the fans with much higher spec fans with a humidity sensitive activation along with a PIV system in the loft and the humidity in the house dropped to within the recommended levels within a day. With showers you can literally see the steam being extracted.
Ah Nori is going to be a big laddie! Sarah, I concur with so many on here, as well as upgrading your bathroom extractor invest in a good dehumidifier. It will make a huge difference, and your house will feel cosier too. Another great video!
It is good that the land rover was damaged and not Sarah suffering an injury.
Great video as always! A while back I calculated that a load of washing on a fast spin contains two pints of water. If you have to dry it inside when the weather is bad that’s a lot of water that has to go somewhere. A dehumidifier would help as suggested by quite a few people. I love watching Jack and Nori!

A fan running in our basement to keep the air circulating along the floor and lower walls to help prevent mold where it’s the dampest part of the house. We also run a de-humidifier.

Sarah, not too worry, sometimes life has it's bumpy roads, eh?
WE used to live in the Pine Barrens region of New Jersey, so we put sections of an inexpensive shield over our gutters
which solved that problem, I don't know if that's possible there, but I thought I mention it.

I love Nori’s big puppy feet.
Wonderful to see how Nori has grown and grown into more of a dog than a pup. I paid for covers on my gutters....after a squirrel got stuck in one of the drain pipes between roof and ground. My neighbor and I had to wrestle the drain pipe down...and the squirrel eventually was able to get out----bet he had a headache from all our clanking around... home ownership!
I love watching Jack and Nori’s antics. Seeing Nori growing and playing takes me back to when my son’s Cocker Spaniel was a puppy. Just delightful.
Loved the dog walk and Nori with the tree branch! It’s amazing how big he is getting. I love his coloring! It’s great to see how he and Jack are getting on. I don’t want Jack to think Nori gets all the attention, Jack, you are such a beautiful , clever doggie! You know I love you! It’s fun watching the two of you working together on things. I had to laugh when you were talking about Sarah throwing the gutter goo on the ground. I had just put the mulch down in my flower beds and my husband did exactly that! Hmmm…..he is my ex….could there be a correlation? 😂😂 great vid as always! Loved your little diddie you played during the dog walk!

What we do is squeegee the walls of the shower then after the last person is showered [we do it consecutively anyway] I manually dry the shower walls and floor with an old hand towel. We have no mould or dampness . Take an extra 5-10 or so after the last shower , but well worth it to avoid the other issues.
As a fellow “shortie” I understand the frequent usefulness of stepstools in the house! (We own two so I don’t have to carry them around as much!)
Our daughter’s flat had such high humidity and we got her a dehumidifier which costs about 10p a day to run and it has made such a massive difference, so much so that she could even turn her central heating off a couple of times this winter. It might be worth your while to look into getting one for your cottage. Great video as ever guys so enjoy your adventures on Skye!!

The 'c' word! I need to use that in our house. We don't have dogs, but cats and they all love their chicken! That's so smart to check the ventilation especially in such an old home where damp can be such an issue, though 17C! Oof! Wonderful video this week. The Oregon coast is also very wet and a dehumidifier really helps keep the humidity in our house below 60. The air quality is nicer and it's healthier too. It runs 24-7 and pulls about 2 gallons of water out of the air daily. Tank gets dumped daily. Model depends on square footage of building. Ours malfunctioned (leak) after 5 years so we now keep it in a plastic bin - just in case.
The boys are a joy to watch and I love your "parenting" skills.
I think dehumidifiers are the way to go with old properties - they just weren't built to be as effective at keeping the damp out.
My dehumidifier is the best purchase I have made since moving to a cottage like theirs.
I used to give my pups carrots to chew on which they loved. I love seeing the dogs on their adventures, so cute.

As an ex surveyor, air changes are best to circulate whats there. Warm air in winter holds more moisture but you need to circulate it as it will condensate on surfaces or internally :)

What a shame about Sarah's bump with the land rover. If it makes you feel any better we once decided to actually put our car in the garage overnight - next day I toook off a wing mirror reversing it out, and the day after took off the other wing mirror as I was carefully watching the side I originally took off! 🤦♀
Fortunately I have a very understanding hubby - but the car never went in the garage again!
With regard to the damp in the cottage - remember that 2 humans and 2 dogs will produce quite a bit of moisture alone. Add in cooking/showering/drying wet clothes and it's not surprising the moisture levels are high. Have you checked if the windows have trickle vents on them? They need to be left open to help with air flow - I think they can be retro-fitted it you don't have any. Maybe a dehumidifier in the hallway too - or one you can move about?

I remember my doggo when he was a puppy, I had just bought a brand new pair of Van Walk hiking boots, I left them outside by the back door. I went outside and went to put them on to discover he had chewed the back out of one of them, he got a stir up after that I can tell you!.
I always give a thumbs-up before i start watching. Because, ya know its gonna be good.
If you are concerned about bowls getting dumped out in public, try the double-bowl system. Have a large bowl and a smaller bowl. Sit the smaller bowl with food/water in the larger bowl and you've got a catchment.

Nori is growing so fast and watching both dogs play is fun. You may want to try using a dehumidifier in your home. It helps a lot down here in Florida, but you will need to remember to empty the water collection bin (which can fill pretty quickly) or attach a drain hose.
We do have one, but its main use is the spare room when we have to dry laundry inside (happens a lot on Skye..!)

Oooh! Think Sarah was definitely in the dog house for a while after accidentally scraping the landy's bumper. Re damp. We live in a stone walled barn too and the best thing we ever did to combat damp and mould was buy a dehumidifier. Ours is a Russell Hobbs which was recommended. Brilliant machine and takes up no space and is lightweight so easily transportable from 1 room to another. Gutters need constant surveillance 😊
Thanks for the advice! We do have a dehumidifier, but it’s been relocated to the spare room since we got Nori, as puppies and electrical appliances don’t seem to mix well 😅

We have stuff called "gutter guard" here. You get it by the roll sits over gutter & allows water in through holes, stops anything bigger than holes. Slides in under eaves & covers drainpipe width.
Try changing the bathroom fan to a centrifugal type which is more effective and that the duct is connected. Great show.

One of the most useful exercises taught where I used to do obedience training was “wait on your rug”. Pups were taught to remain on the area defined by a rug. They can sit, lie down, scratch, etc. as long as they stay on the rug. We started with puppies just a little older than Nori. Was really useful for traveling, especially when getting everything into motel rooms. Didn’t need to worry about doors.
It's lovely to watch Nori grow & mature plus seeing the brotherly bond with Jack grow every episode.

Fabulous episode! So many different things. Nori was so good in the pub. My spaniel, Angus, loves the pub. Under the table, hoping for food to drop. Also have pine needle problems in gutters and hoover blocking as i live in a forest in Gloucestershire. Look fwd to next episode. Nana Karen JK
