      Believe me, in the end the creditcard is the more secure payment option for the consumer. Ever ordered something that didn't arrive? Good luck getting your money back via your bank.
      With a creditcard, you simply perform a carge back and the burden of proof switches to the merchant. Also purchases are automatically insured for 180 days worldwide.. Ideal may be faster than using a creditcard online, but it is not more secure. Because it is not secure, banks are putting a lot of effort into making it very hard to buy something in the first place and that is why they introduced 2FA to make a payment in the first place..
      Ask yourself this: Who suffers when something goes wrong? You, your bank or the merchant? Are you still sure Ideal is safer than a creditcard?

    • @dianespix
      @dianespix 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most of the cars (new ones) come overseas. Whe dont have a warehouse full of cars overhere (never seen one) Some times they have the car you want to buy. So you can get it after a week or 2. Even for a second hand car you have to wait if you buy it. Why I don't know. And about the models of the cars. They are also the new models. Only in the vast Europe the cars are much smaller, and use les gas etc.

    • @MK-tc1on
      @MK-tc1on 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't want you to mess up the car in your legally allowed time to change your mind.
      So you can wait till you no longer have that option before you get to drive the car.

    • @vogel2280
      @vogel2280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1 difference is that Europeans spent about 1 years salary (for those that buy new cars). Because of environmental issues and taxes most of our our cars have a completely different power to weight ratio which is expensive. If you spend that much money, you want it to the right colour with the right options. (you can choose from 20 shades of gray or any other colour) That is why cars in Europe are build to order. Cars that are build to order cannot be returned, hence the waiting until the mandatory cool off period has expired..
      When you buy a second hand car there is no reason why you can't take it right away. However most companies will renew the APK (yearly safety test) which can only happen on weekdays and change oil for twice the price your local garage will charge. (rijklaar kosten) I always take my second hand cars right away.

    With respect to the last thing, the bank authenticator: Nowadays you can usually install an app instead that lets you scan a QR code on the payment page, but that may be different per bank. They're also working on a bank-independent system for this called IDeal QR.

    About the waiting time for cars. I think we have to wait for cars and furniture so that we don't have to put it in an stockroom. Space is expensive in the Netherlands, since there is so little of, so cars would even be more expensive if we put it in stock.

    • @ZukaDon
      @ZukaDon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say the words can be, and are used interchangably. But there is a clear distinction to be made. In both languages. "Irritant" is much more accute to the point of driving you to take immidiate action. Much like things that are getting on your nerves. "Vervelend" is a broader term to describe actions, behaviours and annoying or saddening events.

    I am glad with my bank "typewriter". I refuse to go along with the phone frenzy. I don't like them, I cannot type on them at all, I cannot see what it says without my glasses. The battery drains in 2 days. I hate them. As for the cars, I bought a car with all the options. It was a Japanese car. Waiting time 6 months. So I skipped a few options. The dealer was then able to buy a car to my liking while it was still on the boat from Japan to the Netherlands from a Swedish dealer. Countries get allocated a number of cars per year. If the one you like is not in the lot, they have to produce it first for you. That is the same as in the USA. It is a myth that in the USA you can walk out of the showroom with a car in 1 day. Only if it happens to be in stock at the dealership. That is also possible in the Netherlands. But, they have less stock here. The showrooms are not that big.... expensive ground prices, full small country and all that. With customer service you have a point. It is generally bad. But it helps if you say exactly what you want. That is difficult for people not into Dutch culture. So, don't say my internet does not work. Instead say, my internet does not work, could you check it out right now and if necessary make an appointment for a repair visit? In my experience, that works fine. The biggest problem is to get somebody on the phone in the first place. Horrendous. The same mode of direct communication goes with the car dealer, by the way. I just asked if he could buy my preference from another dealer in the Netherlands. Only then he looked in the computer and the answer was no. Luckily he later found a Swedish dealer with whom he could swap cars. I guess my direct and precise question triggered him even days later. Still, it took 2 months instead of 6.

    The main reason for the constant redirection at customer servicedesks: First line employees are usually completely incapable of answering things that are not on their *very* basic script, so they will transfer you to a second-line employee who would possibly be able to help you. But in doing so, they very often fail to check if what the customer is asking even falls within the work scope of the second line employee. This is a dumb structure but it serves its main purpose: To make each individual person's contact duration as short as possible so the next person in line can be picked up. It serves the most customers a call, it is not done that way to actually *help* customers as efficiently as possible.

    Little explanations about identifiers. All banks have an app that you can scan a QR-code with to make payments. You can also choose the amount of money you can spend a day without using an identifier. I think it's great for security. I only use it to pay to accounts i've never paid to before or payments above my chosen limmit. It is to make sure nobody can just instal the bank app on their phone or log into your accounts through the bank website because you need to use the identifier to instal it and for logging in on your bank website. You can also log into your bank website with the app and a QR-code. But to instal the app you need an identifier. That way nodody but you can acces you accounts. I do have to agree that the ABN-AMRO identifier is not the best. I have SNS and they have little identifiers that have their own pincode that you do not need to put you debitcard into. They are much easier, faster and safer. They are also tied to your account. So only the one you have works with your account. Making it impossible to break into you bank account. I think you just haven't installed the bank app from ABN-AMRO and I would definitely advice you to do so.

    The costumer service feedback loop (person A says B is the problem, B points to A) is commonly described with the saying 'van het kastje naar de muur gestuurd worden' literally meaning 'being sent from the cupboard to the wall'. There is also a tv show (Kanniewaarzijn) that helps people with such costumer service problems, featuring SNL-type sketches of their attempts to get help. And yes, it is often about internet issues.

    Most ISP's in the Netherlands actually do not have their own service network.
    It's mostly just a few big ones like KPN and Ziggo who actually own the physical infrastructure, and most ISP's rent capacity on those.
    What I noticed when I moved last year, is that the "primary" ISP's could deliver internet much faster (within a few days), but it did cost a lot more.

    The ABN AMRO device and the waiting period to get your car is a way to control your spending. Makes perfect sense and it's so Dutch. As an American, it's so easy to spend money by whipping out a credit card. Yes, it's still annoying to me but it does make me second guess my spending and ask myself is it worth the hassle of putting in a pin, entering in a code from one device, then another code from another device. This is why the Dutch don't have credit cards. Also, a reason why we don't have Goodwill warehouses and so many storage facilities where we throw money away to store stuff that we never use and forget about them. It's a vicious cycle of consumerism that I left behind in the US.

    It seems that all 5 things are related to waiting. That's unfair. We can be annoying in many other ways too. We tend to switch to speaking English whenever we suspect someone is not that fluent in Dutch. We have a 'gedoogbeield' for marihuana. Not to mention draaiorgels and smartlappen. We can be very annoying in many other ways; why do you only limit yourself to inefficiencies?

    For internet it really depends on the company how long it takes, some will deliver within 2 weeks, others within 6 weeks. Same goes for costumer service, really bad at some, but quite good at other companies. Usually you get what you pay for, so don't pick the cheapest option.

    New internet: depends heavily on cable, phone or fiber. For Phone (ADSL) or fiber: only certain experienced mechanics are allowed to touch the actual wire that comes from the street. They make an access point, and the rest is done by a lesser mechanic. There is always a shortage of the experienced ones, and not helped by the fact that the grunt mechanics again have time pressure, so are sometimes a bit too happy to say that the problem is out of their jurisdiction (same problem as with callcenters). Cable: less clear cut. When I was in the industry they had a constant shortage of engineers also, partially also because of a high turnover, many rookies called it quits after a few years. But that should be less nowadays. Sure if you have difficult problems (very low signal/noise) the grunt can''t handle it, but generally they are fairly capable and unless you are in such a special location (e.g. new neighbourhoods, or buitengebied (houses outside the villages/cities)) they usually can handle most things alone pretty decently. Shortages puts pressure on making the schedule tight, which is why they like to book well in advance.

    The calculator is for security. It's a device separate from your PC so it can't get compromised by viruses that can then steal your money. Just using a username and password is a sadly laughable way of authenticating yourself and authorising a transaction. But for smaller amounts and/or known accounts you can often authorise the transaction by scanning a QR with your phone and your banking app.

    yep, customer service is something the Dutch don't understand. It comes from a place where middle management is caught up in a paralysing state where they all need to cover their butt in a flurry of emails because nobody wants (dares) take responsibility on behalf of the customer. it's just a thing that happens when there is a tunnelvision on the bottomline (money) instead of the bigger picture of actually doing good business and providing service, which will in the end always bring in the money.

    Hi Jovie, I believe you mean the “Apotheek” and not the “Drogisterij” like the Kruidvat or the Etos. When it comes to “Apotheek”, the pharmacy, the staff at the back are making orders which are brought to people’s homes. The orders are either filling up boxes with the right dosage and amount of pills per box. The second is more complex which involves making a roll of medicine with the right dosage and timestamp when the medicine must be taken. The standard boxes are taken by a courier and often are Vrijwilligers (volunteers) which takes them to people’s home that aren’t able to go to the pharmacy. The rolls of medicine are taken by qualified nurses to people’s homes to charge the medicine dispensers from Medimo (google medimo medicine dispenser). The Netherlands is currently experiencing a lot of elderly people at home that aren’t as mobile as a young person such as yourself. Either way a lot of is manual work. I hope this gave you more insight.

    There is a difference between pharmacies in the NL. You only need to go to a pharmacy (apotheek) if you need a doctor's prescription. For other stuff, without prescription, you can go to a "drogist". Etos, Kruitvat, DA, and others. Those are like a CVS. You are right about the waiting times at apotheken, those always take a long time. And you see 5 or 6 people working in the back, but only 1 or 2 are helping customers.

    Let me explain the new internet connection thing. In The Netherlands there can’t be multiple active subscription on a single address (in residential area’s). So, when the previous occupants of the new house you’re going to rent cancel their internet connection on November 30th, with a month cancellation time (you have to cancel your connection a month ahead of time) it will end in December 30th. Until December 30th no new connection can be activated on that address. So, if the previous occupants leave on December 1st and you move in on December 6 you will have to wait till December 30th to be able to have a new connection. And that is when you stay with your current provider and take your original subscription with you.
    Something that makes it extra difficult is that when you have a fiber connection (and not cable or dsl as is usual in the states) a technician has to physically connect the fiber optic cable to your NT (device that changes the optical signal that comes in to a data signal that can be transmitted over a normal internet lan cable). So a technician who can do this has to be available in your area.
    The banking thing is actually a security thing. In the USA the use of credit cards if widespread. With a credit card all you need is the credit card number, expiration date and ccv number. That’s a BIG security concern. If a criminal listens in on your internet connection or somehow gets hold of that data you are extremely vulnerable to credit card fraud.
    Same problem exists with using only a user name and password. Most people use a single password and username for absolutely everything. So if your password and username are compromised you are again really vulnerable. With this device you’re holding your much much safer. I understand that it can be a drag. But on this issue it’s actually the USA that is backwards and still living in the 70ties. I mean, when the use of a signature is still the number 1 way to authorize a credit card payment in a shop you know something is wrong with that system. A signature that is only sporadically checked by the credit card company, not for every single transaction. Sure, the person processing your payment at the shop has to check your signature to the one on the card, but this person is NOT a handwriting expert with special software to check these signatures.
    So, even though the Dutch way can be a drag, take solace in the fact that it’s done for your security.

    Hi Jovie, about the cars. Dutch dealers don’t hold them in stock because It is too expensive. So they wait until after the cooling period to order it and then the car has to be fabricated. In this way they assure that the car is sold and it can be delivered. I presume in the US the dealers have to invest alot to build up stock and hope to sell all. It is similar with lease cars, but a second hand car should be able to deliver in a day or two. But it is annoying, I agree.

    When I first moved to NL, I asked my boss to help me open an NL bank account, so we went to a local bank and I was able to open an account. I had a check from my US employer along and I asked the bank official if I could cash it into my account as Gulden. He said yes, but he didn't tell me that he was giving me the cash as a loan. So about a month later I saw on the statement that I was being charged interest on this 'loan'. I was annoyed that he didn't tell me that it was a loan up front. In the US I wouldn't have been charged interest for cashing a similar check.

Other than that I usually used a store or cafe's bathroom. But I'm comparing it to my major city that has very little as well and one must buy something in a cafe to use the bathroom. I can go in most grocery stores also. Does AH have public bathrooms? But the nicest thing about NL bathrooms is real doors! The doors in US bathrooms are ridiculous.

    The bank payment can be made much easier with a bank app on your phone, but only up to a certain amount. After that you still need the calculator thing (it's called an e-dentifier) The e-dentifier has been invented to make online payments more secure - fraud is hardly possible with this, because you use your pin to pay. So it definitely has its benefits. It is not going back in time. You pay with your current account. You can pay with a creditcard if you find that easier. But it's not that secure.

    1. Pharmacy... if you mean some like Kruidvat, then go to the one in the Megastores, I had at most like 2 persons in front of me there ever.
    2. Customer support calling. pretty simple: This is the number it says to call, so I must have you.
    3. Internet: KPN is pretty fast in connecting it, often next day the kit, within days your connection. Ziggo is slowpoke, they lose often the early process on houses and only after a while you can get Ziggo in a new house. Problem for Ziggo is they need your modem known (serial number etc) to them for that location to get it active etc.
    4. I've bought cars and drove them the same day. New cars and lease are ... a different thing tho. Dealers have a "set" of cars to sell in their showroom, those aren't for sale till their model runs out. All the new cars are behind Customs at the harbor most often (for outside of EU cars) or are ordered from the factory's parking lot if the manufacturer is in the EU. It will take some time to get those to the location. There is indeed a long wait for the selling contract to be binding. Lease cars have another point there, for those need papers I think with the tax office etc to set up as such. I always bought 2nd hand cars, and if you got a line to your insurance so your car is insured, you can pay for those and drive off the lot with insurance. It becomes a different thing when you go at a higher amount, where a car still costs over a couple thousand euro, for often want to have it send into their bank account, and that must have been cleared b4 you can take the car. Or ... you buy not from a dealer but from a private party. That is as simple as going to the post office and paying the other and registering your car there on your name... still needs your insurance.
    5. Get an ING account. NOW. (you use your phone then, but easier, you just say OK on phone).

    lol Sorry Jovie, none of these things are a problem. I'm Dutch my self and i don't have these problems, because you just don't do it right. First one apotheek, make your order by phone, ask them when it's ready or have them deliver it. So simpel, i never wait more then 5 min and i life in Utrecht, ohh and the ppl in the back are preparing the orders so they can be picked up by ppl that make sure there order is ready. Second one, Customerservice, i worked in a callcenter so i know how it works and this helps allot. Simple make sure you know were to go, so the richt department, so when you choose a wrong number you will be transfert to the right one. This is not happening to you apparently because you don't know your self were to go, and that happen 's if you ask the wrong questions. So no long story's but short and to the point so the person knows wat you want. Again if you can't get true this mostly it's your own mistake.
    third one: This never ever never for ever happend to me, so again. wat did you do, why did you wait so long, normally and i have moved 4 times in the last 10 years. End your contract and open a new one or notify them a few months before. if you move in March, make sure that before February they know when you move from 1 adres to the other. If you don't it's your own fault again. Can't add anything els here, i worked for KPN helpdesk, just make sure you know there rules and for moving you can always find them on the site.
    fourth one, this is normal, thing you might be a bit spoiled as an American, rules and regulations dear, same with long leas cars. secondhand cars is the same day, no idea wat you did, i only bought used cars, always bought it and not from a dealer so that might be it.
    Oké and now the last one, luv this so much that you hate it, i don't want to name you names but come girl. Pls don't be stupid. in the states bank fraud is one of the biggest problems and cause of ppl losing all there money" ALL THERE MONEY>>>MONEY". IT"S FOR YOUR PROTECTION, so get over it don't whine about it and just do it.
    And thanks for this i needed to vent a bit to. don't take it personally allot of ppl have these problems, my parents also have these problems, it happens but most of them can be avoided.
    Keep it up i do luv your channel.

    Well about that card reader, it's what's called 2 factor identification. So that the bank knows that you are authorizing the purchase.
    And it's actually an improvement on the enormous list of (TAN)-codes we used to have.
    We used to have a physical list of numbered codes, that you'd have to enter. Say that you're transferring money, you'd log into your bank, start the transfer, then enter your login details again and a code that corresponded to the transaction number shown on the screen, that would then approve the transfer.
    Believe me, that card reader is sooooo much better and safer.

    You can get internet immediately, just Buy digitenne. Not very fast but available. As for buying a car, it’s quite possible to buy one like a pack of milk, just not from a car dealership and not new. Also you have to pay cash up front Look on Marktplaats, take your pick, and off you go. If you want warranty go to a Bovag garage and you get three to six months depending on the price. I believe you live in Zoetermeer, there are several places within a 10 to 15 mile radius from there that have a concentration of pretty reliable used car traders. You can absolutely get a car under warranty with a new APK ( reliability check) In 2 days.

I myself accept one transfer after that i request to be forwarded to the complaints department, most of the time that helps and gets me to a person who is not first liner that has to read and adhere strictly to answers from a script on punishment of termination while earning minimum wage on a 0 hour contract.
    3 No clue, getting send a modem could be done with next days shipping.
    4 Buy second hand! My first car took 1 day.
    5 Security, if you could just give your bank account number there would be people using yours for paying. I got an app on my phone with which i can scan a QR code that makes it a lot easier.

    I have bought quite some (second hand) cars, but I think I never had to wait over a week to get it home. Car registration isn't that much of a fuss anymore. I suppose for new and private lease cars this will be different, since they often only offer test cars for you to just test the car and not to buy it. Dealerships in the Netherlands generally aren't that big, so their stock is limited.
    Those codes for internet banking are actually for your OWN safety, if someone for whatever reason should have your card and pincode. There are still some configuration options to make it easier though. Btw, in the US it creeped me that waiters were walking away with my (unprotected) creditcard out of sight.

    Dutch customer service is best described as "kale kak". Kale kak- baloney; bunkum; eyewash; hot air; swank.

    That thing depends on the bank you are with. I have a bank app and can pay just with my inlog code. On their website i login and when i pay they send a code to my phone or you can use a QR code.
