I was lucky enough to see this band at Wolverhampton Civic in the 80's, they were absolutely stunning the whole place was dancing. Brum has produced some great bands !!!
I saw the Beat play twice when I was at University of Leicester in the early 1980s, at the Student Union and nearby De Montfort Hall if my memory serves me well. The band appeared in the Student Union Bar afterwards chatting openly to anyone who approached them. They were arguably the best live band I saw in my three years in Leicester (and I saw a lot!). Great talents, great songs and a great band to dance to!
I saw the Beat play twice when I was a student at the University of Leicester in the early 1980s - very good live band - Dave Wakeling, Rankin' Roger and old Saxa who could have been the grandfather of the band. I aways remember Dave Wakeling's distinctive white guitar - played left-handed ! The best of all the Two-Tone Ska revival bands - second only to the Selecter, I think !
A catchy little number for sure - it sounds like they're using a glockenspiel as part of the melody. Not often you hear one of those on a pop tune. Enjoyable - thanks for uploading, and R.I.P Roger.
This was the song that got me listening to and really liking The Beat and I still love their sound. The soulfulness of the voices and the songs. I think they deserved more prominence in the UK music scene.
Now we're going steady, Been together several weeks I check out all the other guys Who we see on the streets When I say, hands off she's mine Hands off she's mine Hands off she's mine, It takes up all my time
@@dizmop Tears of a Clown was when they were on Two Tone. I Just Can't Stop It was released when they were on Arista. It took a while to sort that out and have both on compilations.
Probably band now as possessive and subjective to women.Just a great single that stands the test of time sooo well.Love it so much.A great song off a fantastic debut album.
The point of the record is that men DO NOT own women. It's maybe not 100% obvious from the lyrics, but Dave Wakeling has long said it was the intention.
isn't it the tenyue brother on sax not sure if it's buttons use back ub40 back in the day when they played Birmingham city football ground with the pouges. Robert paper.azzad and special beat wicked gig for me I thought special beat was the best group that night
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
Yes. We all like Fawlty Towers. But is this excerpt really relevant to a clip showing the Birmingham Two-Tone Ska group The Beat ? Clearly your logic is - ahem - a bit 'fawlty' here !
I was 14 and my boyfriend Andy bought me this when we were at Moreton School.

I don't agree. For me it's the other way around. But I do love The Beat.
never better than madness....
Love them all but my top 3:
1. The Beat
2. The Specials
3. The Selector
I loved The Beat,Specials and Madness. My 3 most favourite groups back in the day ❤
The English Beat's first album, which has this song isfabulous. Not a bad song on it.
There are probably only three 'filler' songs for me in their whole output.
Yes. Must be one of the highest quality albums ever of any genre or period.
My mum's favourite tune at the time!(God Rest Your Soul) !
I always associate this band with fun, happy times.

Brilliant music
Brilliant song thanks for uploading
The right mix of bluebeat and calypso.
It’s called Ska
That bass is phenomenal. The whole album was amazing wore the cassette out and repurchased on cd only to find they removed Tears of a Clown. Oh well..
I have CD which includes this and Tears of a Clown. Bought it years ago. Great music for driving!
Why the hell would they not have that on the album? Crazy

So over shadowed by the other 2 tone and ska groups of the time, yet they had their own place right at the top of the pile
Look at the fine young cannibals in the background, brilliant 😮
