  • So, the long promised Meteor 350 luggage mod finally happened !!!
    Sorry it took so long. I've had the panniers for months now, but first of all the constant rain prevented me from attempting to fit them and then, when it did stop raining, I discovered that additional spacers would be needed to complete the job.
    Many thanks to fellow TH-camr LanesExplorer ( check out his channel for more Meteor content ( and sailing bears ! ), there is a link to his channel at the end of this video description ) for making and sending the required spacers to me free of charge. Without you Peter, this mod would have taken even longer and the end result would probably have been a lot worse ! Thank you so much, you went above and beyond !
    This video is part two of the series and presents a step by step tutorial to mounting these panniers.
    The next video will be documenting some final tweaks that I later made and this third video will also contain a full list of all of the items you need in order to replicate this mod with your own Meteor 350, so please be patient, the list of parts and where to buy them will be coming in the final part of this video series !
    Timestamps :
    00:15 Introducing the panniers and mounting kit
    01:45 Fitting the mounting brackets to the Meteor
    04:08 Selecting the desired position for the panniers prior to drilling
    05:16 Preparing the panniers for drilling
    05:55 That went well ! Two successfully drilled panniers !
    06:32 Preparing the drilled pannier for mounting
    07:31 First pannier successfully fitted
    09:00 The birth of the "baby bagger". Both panniers successfully fitted
    11:29 Can you still carry a pillion passenger ?
    12:06 Do they rattle and shake ?
    12:44 But are these panniers actually practical ? Practicality testing.
    14:34 A job well done ( featuring Ruby ) !

      I liked your reply to Stephan-your English Google translation made some amusing choices. Look forward to part three and your tweaks. Both my crankcase shield and gear lever modification went through quite a few iterations before I was satisfied with them.
      We 'looked after' a beagle some years back and she was rather like Ruby - bolted her food as she'd been raised with great Danes who would steal her food unless she golloped it first. Perhaps that's why Ruby makes her sossidge disappear so quickly. 🐕

      @@Lanes-Explorer5733 Hi Peter,
      what do you mean about the translation, are you talking about the auto-generated subtitles ?
      I think Ruby gets so excited by certain treats that she gulps them down. When I give her her dinner in the evening, she is usually quite ambivalent about it, will eat a bit, then leave it for a while and then return later. It's really only with the treats that her greedy side comes through, bless her.
      I do sincerely hope though that she has tastebuds in her stomach, otherwise she's not getting a lot from these sausages 😂

      @@economicalrides Hi Garry. No not subtitles. I scrolled down the comments on your latest video and Stephan made a comment in German. I clicked on 'translate to English' and it did it very well. Then you replied to Stephan in German regarding the overhang on the panniers. I then translated that into English. It made some amusing mistranslations. Perhaps you aren't able to see those as you wrote it? In German probably as you are a German speaker. My German isn't quite up to it unfortunately - 50+ years out of date! X

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lanes-Explorer5733 The only difficult thing for the translator was "bis der Arzt kommt" which translates to "until the doctor comes". But that is actually a correct translation. The expression means "until your dying day" which is "when the doctor comes", so you can carry on tweaking the cases until your dying day, or until the doctor comes. Maybe you are referring to that because the rest of the German used was pretty straightforward 🙂
      Anyway, doesn't matter, I was just wondering if the automatic subtitles needed changing because I do have a viewer who is deaf and watches my videos with subtitles. I usually try to correct them later on myself but at the moment things are too hectic and the last few videos have had the automatic subtitles only, so if they were ropey I needed to know about it 👍🏻

      Thank you Barry,
      yep, I'm happy with the result. Now that the panniers are fitted I can see that there are larger gaps than actually needed, I could probably pull them in up to 2cm on each side but that would mean cutting the spacers down and possibly buying shorter bolts again. Since I bought a ton of ( wrong sized ! ) bolts to get to this point, I'm really not keen on buying any more, just to save 2cm on each side ! The job's a good 'un as far as I'm concerned 😛 As long as the panniers don't split or fall off, they can stay as they are !
      Ruby is awesome, don't know what I'd do without her. She followed me home from the bins one day and camped outside my door for three nights. She made it pretty clear that she had found her new "dad", so I succumbed ! She has also been perfectly behaved from the very first day and was so easy to train. She really is pretty much the perfect pup and a very easy going companion !
      I am lucky to be able to live here, enjoy the good weather ( occasionally ) and the brilliant roads, I realise that.
      I probably don't appreciate it enough though, you know, when something is your normality you tend not to view it as highly as you should. You get used to things over time and stop appreciating them. But reading comments such as yours does remind me to appreciate the life I have, so that's another positive of this TH-cam lark.
      Must appreciate more ! Must appreciate more ! 🤗
      Thanks for watching and commenting Barry. If you ever have any questions about any of the videos, please feel free to ask away and I will get back to you ( well, as long as TH-cam doesn't delete your comment before I get a chance to reply or something ! ).

    Excellent result at a very reasonable cost. If it were mine I would probably cut down all the spacers in order to get the boxes as near as possible to the bike (potential passengers can get the bus....).

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi CC,
      yes in part three I do mention that after initial fitting, a lot of optimisation can be done. Only when the panniers are fitted can you see the true picture. I can save 1.5-2cm each side by shortening the spacers without getting a clearance issue.
      It’s impossible to get things optimal first time, it makes sense to add a bit of margin when somebody else is cutting metal for you.
      My advice to people is that my way will get the panniers safely mounted. Once they are on the bike, look at the gaps and optimise as much as you can be bothered. For 2cm each side I WILL NOT be getting the saw out, those 2cm make no difference to me, but others are free to get the gaps as small as they would like, if they enjoy that sort of thing ( which clearly I don’t 😂 ). Also, the tighter you get the panniers into the bike, the less room you have for things like adjusting the chain. Those 2cm extra gap might mean that I’m less likely to be banging my spanners into the panniers every time I am doing maintenance on the bike for example.
      The job‘s done ! I’m not going back to it ! It’s DONE ! It’s done I tell you ! 😂😂😂
      Cheers CC 👍

    Hallo ER, stimmt... die Schrauben sind etwas Lang, allerdings hätte ich die Distanzhülsen oben am Sitz auch etwas gekürzt damit die Halter näher ans Motorrad kommen.
    Da entsteht eine enorme Hebelwirkung auf die Schrauben, plus die feinen Vibrationen ist für die Schrauben am Sitz gar nicht gut.
    Um so länger die Distanzhülsen sind, umso mehr Kraft wirkt dann auf die Schrauben, Platz zum Stoßdämpfer ist ja gegeben wenn du an den Koffern die passenden Schrauben hast.
    Ich hoffe das Bier hat gut getan. ;-)

      Warte Teil 3 ab Stephan 🙂
      Oben ist das Problem dass die Träger oben sonst AN DEN HANDGRIFF kommen, den Handgriff muss man aus dem weg gehen, nur deshalb muss der Abstand so groß sein. Das siehst Du in den Nahaufnahmen in Teil 3. Die Träger haben oben noch ein langes Stück das sonst dort steht wo der Handgriff ist, der ganze Träger muss deshalb weiter raus bis er komplett vor dem Handgriff steht.
      Es gibt keine nennenswerte Hebelwirkung auf die Bolzen, die Koffer tragen max. 5 kilo jeder.
      Also 2,5 kilo pro M8 Bolzen dürfte überhaupt kein Thema sein 🙂
      In Teil drei kommen auch Bolzen mit der optimalen Länge für die Koffer zum Einsatz 👍
      In Teil drei sage ich auch dass man nach der Erstmontage beliebig optimieren kann, man sieht wo Luft ist und kann ihn rausnehmen wenn man wert darauf legt. Ich kann 2cm enger pro Seite gehen, werde es aber nicht tun weil 2cm mir nichts bringen außer vielleicht Nachteile. Dann ist es nur noch wahrscheinlicher dass ich bei Wartungsarbeiten ( Kette spannen z.B. ) laufend mit Werkzeugen gegen die Koffer schlagen werde. 4cm mehr Breite am Motorrad tun mir ja gar nicht weh aber wer Spaß dran hat kann weiter basteln bis der Arzt kommt 😛
      Ja, das Bier hatte ich gekühlt gekauft, kühl nach Hause gebracht und in einem vereisten Glas serviert. Es war also sofort kalt und lecker und war auch nötig !🍺🍺🍺
      Cheers Stephan, bis bald ! ( der besagte Teil 3 kommt am Donnerstag 🙂 )

    I think I would move them up one holes worth if they will clear the passenger; it might lend more stability when there is weight in them. I would also use a fender washer between the spacer & the rubber grommet on the pannier to prevent distortion (apparent in the video). Decent looking & functional!

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi reconphil,
      see part three on Thursday. I was lacking 8 penny washers so had to use the small washers I had in stock on the grommets. The first tweak was to replace them with new penny washers to keep the grommets nice and flat 😉
      The panniers are mounted on the second hole, so you can go up one of course.
      Personally I prefer the weight low down ( better handling - I ride mountain roads mainly ) and the cases out of the way of the grab handles, which I use to put the bike on the centre stand. The bike also looks better from behind when the cases are just above exhaust level IMO.
      You can pretty much put these panniers where you like though, if you are prepared to cut metal 🙂
      Now that they are mounted, I see that I COULD bring the panniers in about 2cm each side. The main objective was to find a way to fit them. After that, if you want to, you can tweak as much as you like. I‘ll be leaving everything as it is, since I can’t be bothered shortening spacers and sourcing shorter bolts. It’s not as if I need to do a lot of filtering around here, so 4cm extra width do not really make any difference to me 🤗
      Cheers reconphil 👍

    You can drop the rubber grommets into hot water and they will go in easily, dish soap can help but they are a bugger to hold onto. Duct tape over the internal bolt heads will help stop possible damage to luggage (beer bottles especially)

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi 😛
      Yep, I might cover the bolt heads eventually. I left them naked because I'm still tweaking things and need regular access to them. But once everything is in place and staying there, definitely a worthwhile measure to protect valuable cargo 😜
      I think without fingernails the grommets would have been a real pig to fit, I broke some of mine doing it but got there in the end. I only twigged afterwards but if you fit them with the lid open you can also work with one hand from inside the pannier and pull them through, which helps a lot. If I ever had to repeat this job ( please Lord no !!!! ) then I think I would have it done in about half the time 😛
      Really happy with the result. Now that they are fitted, I can see that I have maybe 2cm too much gap each side but can't be arsed shortening spacers and buying shorter bolts now that everything is fitted. Also, those 2cm will be beneficial when adjusting the chain etc., should make it less likely that the mechanic at the dealers keeps whacking his spanners into my cases when working on the bike. Tight looks nicer but a bit of a gap is sometimes quite useful and 2cmm either side is not going to make much difference to me as the rider, so sod it !

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter,
      I did think about doing exactly that but really there is no need.
      The panniers are only rated for 5kg max load each, above that the bottom would probably fall out 😂😂😂
      5 kg suspended on two M8 bolts and four M6 bolts is not going to be a problem 🙂
      Custom Acces also sell larger, heavier panniers which are also expected to hang from just the two upper bolts, just like here.
      That hole down there by the footpeg was tempting me but honestly, that would be total overkill with the meagre loads involved here.
      For heavier panniers, expected to carry heavier loads, definitely a good belt and braces option though !

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrjoneseastend I don’t think so.
      There are rubber grommets in the holes and they have a steel insert which the bolt passes through. There is no way the holes themselves can split or get any bigger because everything sits on the rubber grommets.
      Besides, the manufacturer also only recommends mounting from two mounting points above, with no requirement for a further stay below. Even with their much larger and higher capacity cases, they only mount to two points above and the four bolts to attach the brackets to the cases.
      If the bolts don’t work loose, the cases are not going anywhere. Since the nuts on the panniers themselves are nyloc they should also be vibration-proof and not work loose but I am currently checking them after every ride, just to be sure. So far everything is staying tight !

      Hi LB,
      nah, nice short bolts make an appearance in part three. No way was I up for removing, cutting and refitting eight bolts 😂
      Yes, a gloss black wrap with some sort of Fireball yellow accents could look really factory. Plus the wrap would cover up some of the cheapness of the plastic and probably offer a more scratch and scuff resistant surface.
      If I can afford to do it, I probably will. There is a wrapping place not far from here, need to find out what they would charge for two panniers.
      Then I’ll have to come up with a design for the yellow bits and they can get started 👍

      Shame you didn't give us a "how to fit these gaiters", that would be of great interest to me, I would get some if I thought that fitting them wasn't beyond me.
      But if the cases don't split or fall off I think I will definitely look at getting them vinyl wrapped, they will just look a little bit better quality then.

      @@lancerbiker5263 Awesome Lance !
      Somehow I imagined it would all be a lot more complicated, I thought you had to work from the top somehow.
      So basically you just remove everything that is somehow attached to the fork lowers ( including the wheel of course ), and then slide the gaiters over the top and down as far as they will go and tie them. Then put everything back on the fork lowers as you rebuild.
      That doesn't sound beyond me at all. Might have to buy a trolley jack though, don't think I have one !
      Lovely to see Leo ! He didn't seem to know who Ruby was or he was thinking that she must be inside your camera somewhere, bless him. Ruby sends lots and lots of fluffy kisses.

      Most surprisingly of all I didn't make a total hash of fitting them or scratch the bike in the process. I view them as a glovebox for the bike. They only support 5kg each side but that is enough for my paperwork, my m/c emergency toolkit and a bottle of water. Maybe a lock if I am going to be parking the bike somewhere a bit dodgy. Really good solution, especially for the price. I wonder if those brackets could be useful as a solution for keeping canvas bags off the shocks 🤔

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Spot on Wayne !
      I thought that myself. I thought that if I made a hash of drilling the panniers, I would chuck them in the bin and buy some nice big throw over bags and use the brackets to keep them away from the bike and maybe lash them down through the holes with shoelaces or cable ties.
      If you think you can do stage one of this job ( fitting the mounting brackets with the required spacers ), for 30 EUR you could acquire yourself a sort of soft bag mounting setup for both sides I reckon.
      Not 100% sure if it will work but I definitely had the same idea.
      Check out the closeups in part three and see if you think that would work for throwover bags Wayne.
      It would also be a piece of cake to add a metal bar as a crossmember between the two brackets ( a piece of steel with a hole in each end ). Then you would have even more support behind the bag plus a nice big horizontal lashing down point !
      I’m sure that a 30 EUR set of brackets would give you more options for mounting soft bags, the only question is, will they push the bags too far out ? The middle part which joins the bags tends not to be super long and the bags might begin before the bracket has been cleared.
      If you are thinking individual bags rather than conjoined throwover bags, then I’m sure that the brackets could form at least the basis of a secure and solid mounting solution !
      Cheers Wayne, great input 👍

    I'll tell you what EB, you might describe them as cheap & nasty, but to me, on this side of the screen, they really look 'the business'. Perfect design for the style of bike that the Meteor is.
    Now will you please let Ruby have her garden back! 😎

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Martin,
      yes, I agree and actually they are holding up way better than I thought they would. I thought they would scratch up fairly quickly and start to look tatty but they are holding up really well, still nice and shiny 🤗
      To be honest I had three criteria when looking for panniers for this bike. I wanted them to be lockable, I wanted them to be cheap and I didn't want them dwarfing my relatively small bike.
      I don't need huge capacity from bags, just enough for a small toolkit, some water, a sandwich, some bungees and straps. Wearing a rucksack always gives me neck ache over time, so I really dislike having to wear one. These panniers are perfect for what I needed and as you say, they do suit the bike very nicely. They were very DIY to fit but the effort was definitely worth it. Now I have a small rucksack which is my "day out bag" and I just load that up the night before my ride and can just take it out to the bike and put the whole lot in the RHS pannier in one smooth motion and I'm all set. Job done.
      Even now, after all this time, I still think that Buddy looks so cute with his "Baby Bagger" cases on and they are super practical. I did well to find them really and when this video came out, these cases were impossible to get, out of stock everywhere. I've no idea if they are still available but they definitely suit the scale and the lines of the Meteor really well and I do get a lot of compliments when out on Buddy 🥰
      Ruby loves "helping" her Dad in the garden, she can be seen wandering about in the background in most videos if you keep your eyes peeled 😂
      In my recent 'Meteor Bar End Mirror' video she can even be seen reading the fitting instructions to make sure that I have fitted them correctly 😂
      She seems to think that she is my supervisor !
      Cheers Martin 👍🏻

      D'you know, I'd actually thought of them as 'mini-baggers' cases when I first saw the shots of them on the bike. Now here's an idea...... with them being so reasonably priced, you could buy a second set, to plaster with other TH-camr's stickers! 🤦

      @@martintraffordmoorlandbike7121 And I always thought that "Buddy the Baby Bagger" had a nice ring to it, so I was happy with the outcome 😛
      I recently added my Economical Rides stickers to these panniers but I did take a lot of convincing to do so ! I'm really not a fan of stickers on vehicles but since Buddy was responsible for the birth of the channel, I decided that they were more or less obligatory !
      You are quite right though. If I were to go all in on the sticker collecting thing, I would need an extra pair of cases because I would always want to be able to go back to the nice clean look. But then I thought, actually, I am not intending to sell my fridge anytime soon, I can just put the stickers on there and I don't have to ruin my bike or lose the stickers whenever I decide to swap out bikes.

      Hi LE,
      yes but according to my poll a lot of people still need convincing.
      But that's ok because I will do a follow up once I've done a fair few rides with the panniers on.
      Unfortunately at the moment I am pretty much HAVING TO ride the Classic, because I really need to get it over 2000 km asap for further comparison videos. Two bikes and just one backside is not ideal 😂
      I think the poll is 40% don't want or need them and 60% will get them / still thinking about getting them.
      So yes, the majority of viewers seem to be interested in them and some of them are just waiting to see how they hold up and if they fall off 😂
      I agree. We can but hope that one day there will nothing but good sausages in the world LE ! We should hold onto this hope in the face of all evidence to the contrary !
