  • Day twenty five of my Heysen Trail Walk saw me walk from the Old East Mount Bryan School, over Mount Bryan and down to Hallet where I stayed in the old railway station. The climb of Mount Bryan today was one of the highlights of the track so far. The Old Hallet Railway Station was yet another of those great places that you can stay for free on the Heysen Trail… sitting in front of a nice fire was a magic way to finish a great day.

Well, that brought back a few memories. I stayed in both those accommodation places, legally, on the Mawson, and similarly spread out. Great facilities, if relatively unused. You probably know you skirted past the now-restored farmhouse where Douglas Mawson grew up, and I did ask myself how he managed to become so famous from such humble beginnings. The guy on the $100 note. He must have done early training up Mt Bryan for his later explorations in Antarctica.

With the wind blowing Mt Bryan felt a little like Antarctica🥶I did know that someone famous in history had lived nearby… I didn’t realise it was Mawson though.

The sheep whisperer - your new name.😂. Views from Mt Bryan look impressive. I wonder if it was cleared or always treeless?

lol… I’d been on my own for so long I didn’t even realise that I filmed that🤣🤷‍♂️… if I had to guess I’d say it originally had a sparse covering of trees before clearing for agriculture… maybe🤔 I’m pretty sure the ones around Burra were cleared for the copper mines back in the day and that may have extended up to Hallet?
