- The movie story deals with Preeti a wealthy young medical student living in Mumbai with her widower father, Heerachand. While on a trip to Simla, she meets and falls in love with Prem; they get intimate with each other. Prem asks Heerachand for his daughter's hand in marriage. Preeti's father refuses, on the ground that the hard-up Prem is not worthy of her. Prem leaves Preeti a note, explaining that her father refused the alliance and that he is heading to meet his mother, who is very sick. Heerachand gets hold of the letter before Preeti. He changes the letter with a fake one that says Prem is going away because Heerachand has refused to provide any monetary compensation. Years later, Prem and Preeti are fated to meet again. This time, Prem is accompanied by a handicapped boy, Rahul, while Preeti is about to get engaged to Dr. Amar. It is revealed that Rahul is Prem's and Preeti's son. Prem has come to Dr. Amar for Rahul's treatment. Preeti was pregnant when her father sent Prem away. She gave birth to a baby, but her father told her that it was still-born. Prem took his son and promised Heerachand that he would never tell Preeti about the child. Dr. Amar treats Rahul as Preeti tries to hide her past from Dr. Amar. Preeti learns the truth about Rahul's birth and confronts her father, who confesses and asks her forgiveness while Rahul is united with his parents.

In my country, Algeria, this movie is the most famous among all Indian films, despite the existence of so many great other ones. The story is so beautiful and touching, especially the sequences with the kid. The songs are unique, and I still know the tunes and parts of the lyrics, despite I don't understand a thing(of course at the time when it was shown in the cinemas there were translating captions, touching lyrics). Now as I've grown up and become more "realistic"(hhh)I am not moved by it as much as when I watched it back then, when tears were running down my cheeks, crying silently,so sorry for the kid and his father, and deeply touched by the love story(which then "set me the example" of how love should be). Yes, such a big difference. Women used to cover their whole bodies, and the stories were about real love. Women today almost have nothing on and perform lascivious dances. I am not a prim or backward guy, but certain standards are so sweet and beautiful.

@@gunner4ever924 My friend there is nothing here to suggest rape. In Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1973) there is a scene where they are doing an experiment on body heat. When a man is warm or comfortable enough, he does get an erection. There is nothing to suggest rape. This was a love ❤️ story. Towards the middle & end it was centered around the child. So essentially, this could be defined as a family film 🎥 🎞. In Yash Chopra's Daag (1973), Sharmila Tagore's character gets raped by Prem Chopra. There is nothing disgusting about this film- its all a matter of your perspective.

When I was a child I remember seeing big lines of people waiting to buy the tickets to go to see this film. Most of time was house full. Everyone used to love this film. My childhood friends all of them had such a crush for Shashi Kapoor. Me, well, I was in love with Amitabh Bachchan, still am. When I get to see this film I was a teenager, and all my childhood friends went along, and they had seen it countless. I cried immensely, oh God, all of us and, of course, there were some boys always joking about the girls tears . All my friends have seen so many Bollywood films, but when we talk about Indian movies, still this film is N. 1. I wonder if ever Shashi Kapoor himself cold guess or heard that this particular film was such a huge hit all over Europe also. He was so beautiful and a very talented actor. My mom never liked Bollywood but when she saw Shashi she was mesmerized by his beautiful face . I pray for his peace in eternity.
