Stations are rarely worth salvaging even if you are setup for it, bulk iron mostly, some PD weapons. A dedicated salvager for pirate wrecks is another matter altogether. Ups the number of drops you see significantly. Midgame salvage carriers are pretty epic
You went into the rift as blind as i did, i feel the mission briefing could give a few more details. I did find there are ways to repair your ship inside the rift, also in my experience if you destroy all the hostile xhotan the next wave that spawns is not usually hostile until you fire again or the mission agros them. Also alliances are like creating seperate players, they have their own system and weapon inventory, resources, credits, and most importantly their own seperate faction standings. A player can be on good terms with an NPC faction while his alliance is at war with them, it all depends on who owns the ship you are flying, your personal ship or a ship that had been given to the faction(which is permanent). Your player drone is always your personal ship. You can deposit money and turrets into the alliance vault then they can be used when you are flying an alliance ship.
You said 'it seems pretty straightforward, but maybe it won't be' like a thousand times. Are you just hoping it becomes confusing and not straightforward or what?
If you want to dock an asteroid, you need to claim it, pilot it, then use build to keep reducing it's size
A lot of trouble could be avoided if you put some turrets on auto fire. You can always switch them back to manual without going into the menu.
