I bought a cervelo R3 new back in the early 2000s. $5000US or so in year 2005 money. Crashed it hard and did not try to get the frame repaired. That was by far my favorite bike. I just bought another R3 off ebay for $800 shipped. I've been riding it for months. The thing is great. It's got some scuffed paint probably from a car bike rack, but otherwise looks brand new. I'm not delusional enough anymore to pay $10,000 or $14,000 for a bicycle.
i still can not get over the riders and their disc brake road bikes,,they dont have a clue how the industry pushed that disc brake crap down their throats ,,totally amazing,,paying more for heavier bikes and not seeming to care,,,i am on the lookout for the cervelo rca,,super super light rim brake bike but they are rare as hens teeth
Beast of a bike! Absolute deals out there if you spend a couple hours a day looking, a bike is one of the powerful investments for your health & life quality, Carbs FTW!! 💪💪💪
older Cervelos have very small tire clearance. Mine has a max of 25mm and very little room for any flex. So you're not riding 30 or 32 wide with low pressure on that frame
RS = Paris Roubaix bike. Can fit 30mm in here BUT I don’t run that because I’m going for SPEEED on this bike. I have a gravel bike for gravel. This is a ROAD bike. ✌️
Thanks DurianRider, I recently bought a bike with Fulcrum Racing Zero (FRZ) wheels and, as you, love them. They are great for climbing albeit cant help think that there maybe some aero gains to be had with a deeper profile - what are your thoughts? Is there a wheelset out there that competes with the FRZ`s & offers a better aero profile (my use - Gran Fondo & everyday riding)
I have rim brake, full carbon with old red/f22 groupset, bike, but i anyway looking to get disc brake modern bike, because of tyre clearance, old ones cant be installet 28-32mm tires with wider rims for comfortable riding. That why new bikes are more comfortable for riding at this point.
How on earth do you get that bike down to 6.7kg? I have the exact same frame in 58, ( eBay, £800 gbp) . Full Ultegra and Mavic Ksyriums, with pedals and 2 bottle cages, 8.3kg. Any tips on getting that down to 6.7 will be much appreciated 👍
Which is absolutely insane! I bought a ‘92 Trek 2100 pro with Shimano 105 for $80 3 years ago! I know its tech is outdated in comparison to today’s bikes but for $80 you’ll hear zero complaints from me. I have a blast riding it!
You can get brand new Alloy bike with rim brakes and carbon fork with sora/tiagra which is great, for1500 euros I can get new a new bike with ultegra 11 speed and lightweight aluminium frame
100% agree, durianrider you're a great, 2020s are insane years in road bikes world. Greetings from Fulcrum's state ( I have the Giro tuesday at 5 km from home )
rebuild a chromoly bike, preferably tange 2, columbus, reynolds 531, etc. then rebuild one of these used carbon bikes. then compare for yourself. you'll acquire tools, knowledge, and patience. then you will be able to run your own scientific experiments. publish your findings on youtube for the world to see.
Short answer - no. I did similar a few years ago. It’s a very comfy ride: more like an armchair and no real zip compared to a carbon / alu frame. Good for winter or touring, but not if you want to blast around for an hour.
whatever you ride most will be the best for you if you think 200 grams make the difference in winning the race and not the guys legs, keep spending more money!
Aside from tire clearance and wider gear ranges, i see no meaningful advances in road bike tech for the last 15 years for people who don't race at the pro level. And if I'm on a ride that requires either of those two advances, I'll ride my gravel bike instead. Completely happy with my lightweight 2011 Scott Foil with rim brakes and have no intention of replacing it with something more modern
I love how the chinese brands are thriving, because the middle class cyclists (which make up 75% in the hobby) seem to come out in a rash when the chinese stuff is mentioned.
The problem is finding 10 speed running gear, trying to refurbish my 2012 Roubaix Sram red, can’t get 10 speed 50/34 SR chainrings for love nor money, after market also very scarce everything is 11/12 speed. Cranks in 165 no chance.
Ur into climbing hills so u need ligtweight bike but many want a more versatile bike with wider tyres, rim brake bikes simply arent selling, so they get cheaper
For most people not racing these bikes would be too harsh. A newer bike with more relaxed geometry and wider tire clearance is just a better experience. You can lighten it up if you wish to but don’t have to. The weight won’t make much difference.
There is an alternative for folks like you. Look through the old ads from people posting ridiculous prices, as a result these bikes have sat for many, many months, I've seen them advertised for a year, withdrawn, then re-advertised. They've worn out their market by taking offence to realistic offers. Just talk truth to them nicely, & maybe.

Exactly because they had to compete back then. Now these labels just sell themselves.
