    Wow! this was my 2nd video here on TH-cam. When this was filmed I had NO idea now invested I would become in making preparedness videos. I feel like I've come a long way. This version of the kit is over 8 years old now. Here is a link to my latest version of the Altoids EDC Kit: th-cam.com/video/MyMNiANaJrQ/w-d-xo.html. I hope you enjoy seeing how this kit as evolved over the years. Cheers! ~Cliff

    @donmon425 Yes, you are right. However, I feel that there is not a lot of scenarios in an urban environment that warrants carrying a tin with the more typical survival gear. I try to have a well rounded EDC that gives me a lot of options for my day to day life with supplies that I am more than likely to use. Thanks for the comment!

    I'm going to make a revised version of this within the next month. I will include an itemized PDF that you can download.

    OMG you have altoids mints in your altoids kit!! Of the 15 million videos I've seen on this, that's the first time lol. On a more serious note: I love that you did this video... I've been carrying an every day kit like that for awhile now, and it comes in handy on a daily basis. My favorite item in yours would have to be the picture... you were dead on about the will to live being the #1 consideration! Thanks for sharing this my friend!

    One small consideration might be to throw in one of the smaller variant single moist towelettes. I don't know if they have a Buffalo Wild Wings in your area but they offer complimentary moist towelettes that I take advantage of every time I go by. There are just countless times in the day when I find myself going to the bathroom just to wipe up my hands or face.

    Great Urban perspective. This creates a whole new arena for diverse kits to be developed. One thing I did with my USB drive is put a host of free ware things like Open Office, virus scanners, my bookmarks/favorites, and a file with all logins and passwords- you may even want to add files or books on survival in general. Maybe even take screen shots of maps of your local area and save them. If the Internet is down but you have power and need to find direction or navigate then that works out.

    Good idea- I'd add 2 Benadryl tabs. They could help you sleep, stop runny nose/watery eyes if you have a cold, and stop any allergic skin/bug reaction by crushing one & mixing with water & applying it topically.

    Hey man, great tin, i made one myself and i realized having matches taped to the top of the tin is a great idea with the striker next to it. Matches can be better than lighters in some ways: lighter and less space, fire source, and most importantly it could be used to deodorize the air if you reak up the bathroom

  • @TheUrbanPrepper
    @TheUrbanPrepper  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @richardheadIII Great ideas! I'll move the paper to the top and will add the two quarters. Since making this video, I have added 1 foot of Gorilla Duct Tape. Thanks for the input!

    Very well thought out for an urban environment. i like this very much. the thought you put into your vids is very evident. keep up the great work. i will keep my rural tin in my GHB, and this is a great idea for daily carry. All the good ideas have already been mentioned.

    @WanderingWallaby I like the pen, but I use it as a emergency/backup pen only. I have the pens in my EDC backpack that I use more often. There's not a lot of ink in the True Utility pen, so I don't think it is designed for extended use.

    It’s good to see a REAL urban kit. In my kit, I also have 3 additional things: sewing kit I got in hotel, a compact victorinox nail clipper and a extra small charging cable for my iPhone. Anyway, it is a great and practical video. Thanks!

    Without taking the time to check previous comments, I would say that carrying around six quarters in your kit would allow for three payphone calls if you became separated from your cell phone and needed to make a call for assistance. I keep them in mine, but I admit that I have never needed them. I would also like to point out to those making negative comments, that you're not preparing for an urban survival scenario, but rather appear to be preparing for possible inconveniences, much like every woman who ever carried a purse. I think you are just being smart and prepared, and I try to do the same. I enjoyed your video.

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ross Dickson Thanks for watching and for the suggestion regarding the quarters. I have been trying to carry 5 in my tins lately which has worked well so far. If you truly want an "urban survival kit", you are going to need a lot more than tiny pieces of gear in an Altoids tin. A backpack with gear would be minimal. That's why I like going with more of an EDC approach with just small aspects of survival items.

    Nice little kit. I think the inclusion of water purification tabs would have been wise choice, I don't really see a need for any type of water collection container though as discarded containers are easy to find in an urban setting.

  • @PreparedWolf34
    @PreparedWolf34 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think a sewing kit would come in handy. The then cardboard type with four color threads and a needle would be fine. Replace one of the color treads with kevlar string or dental floss and you'll have thread strong enough to use as a untility cord and water proof.

  • @AnimeShinigami13

    I wanted to suggest yesterday 2 items to keep with you and one type of item to not use.
    1. Needles and thread, pre threaded, knotted, ecetera and all ready to go. maybe a patch big enough to cover a hole in a garment
    2. a length of thick cordage sturdy enough to anchor something thats broken but not the hemp, jute, or sisal twine that is often sold for macrame. I found out the hard way from it that I'm allergic to jute, and after 2 hours trying to weave it, my fingers were raw and /so/ sore!

    I'm very new to all this, but I've enjoyed--and learned from your videos. I also live in an urban area with little use for fishing line, etc., so I wanted to build my own urban kit. I' trying out one of those aluminum wallets, however. It is nearly the size of the Altoids tin but built to be in a back pocket. I found the small items easily fit into the wallet's slots designed for credit cards, etc. It has a latch and is advertised as water and crush proof. We'll see how it works out!

    suggestions: place a band around yer lighter, to prevent the lighter switch from accidently being pressed, and wasting the gas. A ranger band around the can is good to have, to keep the can shut good, and the band could be used for multipurposes. (find an old bike tube, and cut into bands) Excellent videos as always UP.

  • @TheUrbanPrepper

    @KingDavidANC Good point on the accessibility. I haven't made my normal EDC video yet, but I do carry a Streamlight Stylus Pro and Leatherman Juice S2 on me at all times, which are much more accessible. The items in this tin are backups. The pen does require the extra step of getting in the tin, but I've read reviews of some people losing them when connected to their key chain. Man, has this little pen come in handy though. I usually have my EDC bag with me, which also has pens.

    Awesome kit.. I took the mirror glass out of an old car at the junk yard, broke it down to a two by two square, and rounded/glazed the edges so they aren't sharp for safety. Doesn't have to be large to be used as a signal mirror, and it could always be broken again if you needed a disposable sharp edge in an emergency without losing your knife.

    @OutdoorChautauqua Locally or via TH-cam? Most of my friends and family have no idea of my prepping. When people do see one of my bags or organization methods, they usually like it. But I don't elaborate much further. :)

    This was posted a couple years ago so my suggestions were probably already mentioned. You could add a quarter or two for meter parking, needle and thread for the possible ripped pants (came in handy, I actually cut off a portion of pocket to use as the patch), toothpicks (if you dont already carry a victorinox), and a wee bit of duct tape. Thanks for posting. You've got a new subscriber

    Thanks for showing me your urban survival tin, great job. I will be making myself one of these real soon so I am doing my research :)
    I didnt read through all your comments but some kind of tape would be helpful, say you write a note to a family member or something you could tape it to something so they could see it and it doesnt get blown away by the wind and end up on the floor.

    If you polish up the inside lid of the tin, you could use that as a simple signalling mirror... I know you said you have no real use for one in an urban setting, but I think it'd be handy none the less, even as a form of communication or something like that.
    Terrific video, very informative and has given me food for thought for my own kit... I'm aiming for a kind of general purpose kit... like a hybrid between rural and urban, while keeping it as light as possible.

    @mrmonkeyman50 I'll see if I can squeeze it in. I do have some alcohol wipes in my EDC bag which is always nearby. I'll try to find a mini duct tape wrapping design (a 1/2" slice of a credit card?).

    It's great to see a video that is more grounded in reality for the vast majority of us. The anti diarrhea pills are key, ditto for the Micra. In an urban or suburban area, scissors are simply more useful than a knife. I'm going to make one of these and toss it in my backpack. Altoids tins are too big for my pocket.

  • @pebble888
    @pebble888 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video and great ideas for an urban, understated, EDC. Few suggestions for what they're worth: get Victorinox Midnite Manager which could replace light, pen and Micra. Add a needle, thread and a couple of shirt buttons. Add a few quarters (for payphone, WC). One lace (it's amazing how handy this can be) & on inside of lid emergency/next of kin phone numbers

    Great Kit! One thing I thought about carrying in my urban kits especially is an activated pre-paid phone card. It's a better idea, I think, than trying to fit some quarters in your kit for emergency phone calls if your cell phone it down.

    I have a USB that's much smaller, it's called the "Verbatim Tuff 'N' Tiny", it's shorter and thinner than the Nanolight, I have both sitting in front of me and holes lined up the USB goes to the where the knurling starts and thickness is the head of the Nano.
    Also, I'd suggest going to the airport to get knives and stuff, I bought my micra for 3 bucks and a &50 dollar SAK for $5

    I couldn't tell if you had Benadryl in your med bag, but if not Benadryl can be a life safer. Maybe you or someone has an allergic reaction to a food, medication, or even an insect sting. I'd also reconsider the alcohol preps. They can go a long way in preventing infection and can also be used to clean things as well. Just my two cents. Great kit.

    To the people inquiring about the USB - it doesn't have to just be a blank USB. You could have copies of important records on it (birth certificate, maps, contacts, insurance, etc.) as well as some e-books about surviving emergencies and whatnot. Plus, I believe he does IT work so he probably has some useful IT programs on there and/or uses it to move files around between workstations and such.

    Add a small button compass. You could find yourself in an unfamiliar part of town and not be familiar with any of the streets. At night or on an overcast day you wont have the sun to help with direction. Four items I always carry in a very small nylon pouch are a peanut lighter, whistle, flashlight and compass.

    Just watched this again, have been thinking about it for weeks now. Drop the can opener, keep it in your kitchen drawer at home. Drop the whistle and learn how to do it with your lips and teeth. Drop the flash drive; if you use it that much, you will have one when you need it. Replace the pen and Micra with a Victorinox Manager. Add an alcohol wipe, antibiotic ointment, and a single-use tube of super glue. Drop the Altoids and add a stick of gum; as that can help with minor digestive issues too.

    Loved your video. And I agree with you why does everybody in the comment section think that you have to prepare for an apocalypse? I have an altoids tin not dissimilar to yours and it comes in handy all the time in day to day urban life. If you're preparing for apocalypse then you don't use a small tin! Awesome video though!

    Great kit, you have a number of things that many people forget to bring. I would say that you should defiantly find a way to fit the condom in there, they are probably one of the most useful things you can carry. Also you might want to think about having some utility razor blades in there, they are really useful if you need to cut things and don't want to bother with a multi-tool

    Do you have the PDF for THIS kit? I see you edited the description with the link to your newer version, but to be honest I feel like the contents of this specific kit would get more use out of me personally as opposed to your latest version. If not then it shouldn't be too difficult to just look up each item on Amazon. Love all your vids though, I shared your FB page on my own wall just a few minutes ago.
    I have a pretty nice Apocalypse bag in my trunk with all the wilderness stuff (I'm military), but having this little "convenience" tin to carry around for unforseen day-to-day issues seems like a great idea.

    A very clever idea and video. A lot of these EDC-ers have lost the way, concocting paranoid scenarios to justify carrying more stuff that you would even need on a camping trip. Yet they live in Denver, or Manchester, or some other nameless city with street lights and emergency phones.

    in an urban situation you'd find potable water if you had to- plenty of garage fridges stocked with drinks, back of toilet tanks or even yard hoses coiled up contain water. I admit last two won't be tastiest, but neither would purification tabs.

  • @seigeengine
    @seigeengine 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to question anti-diarrhea medicine, if only because, while there are certainly severe problems with having diarrhea in a survival situation (mainly dehydration), people have diarrhea for a reason. It's a defense mechanism, usually against things being in your body that aren't good for being in your body. So there's definitely a balance there that has to be considered. In the short term though, water is almost certainly more important.
    Agree on lighters being great. Also easy to replace.

    @jaredscolton1 LOL! I would be extremely curious to see if there was a news article of someone surviving some kind of emergency situation using an Altoids survival tin. I haven't seen any stories/articles...

    I always seem to use my USB harddrive in an urban environment. Won't do you much good out in the woods though. :)

    Matches are definitely a good competitor, but I imagine a lighter would get you more uses/volume.
    I still don't agree with the USB, only because I wouldn't call that survival. Still useful.
    My only criticism is that it needs some kind of sanitation means, even if it's a single sanitizing wipe, or something of that nature.
