    I am about a week into the low FODMAP diet. As I’ve aged, I’ve begun to eat less and less meat and fish, and I’m lactose intolerant, so eat typically more on the vegan spectrum. I too have been sick for years,, and am so grateful to have found your videos. They give me the hope and inspiration I’ve been needing. Thank you so much for being willing to put yourself out there! You are making a positive impact on so many peoples lives!

    Just started low FODMAP. As a vegan who ate loads of ripe bananas, soy milk, avocados, onion & garlic, bread & pasta. mangoes I just could not understand why I felt so ill and bloated. Many suggested it was my vegan diet but thankfully, I now know differently and am already feeling better after just one week!

    I've really enjoyed your videos so far, so I thought I would watch the beginning of your journey as well. I have both IBS and LPR (Laryngopharyngeal reflux), and my GI doctor recommended that I try a low FODMAP diet. After 5 days of frantic research, I jumped in trying to start the diet and learn as I go. There is definitely a steep learning curve, but your videos and website have been a huge help. While I'm not vegan, I am an animal lover trying to eat less meat. I also have the challenges of celiac (so gluten free and reading labels is old hat to me) and needing to limit acidic foods (tomato, citrus fruits, chocolate, coffee, tea, etc.). Thank you for putting out such great resources. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

    Hey, I have a tip. Try this for a high protein vegan body
    building meal. (Of course, it low fodmap and vegan).
    Ingredients:
    15g oats
    50g vanillia soy protein isolate
    80g frozen strawberries
    80g frozen banana
    150ml Almond milk
    15g Peanut butter
    (optional maple syrup).
    Instructions:
    1. take the oats and mix with 200ml of water.
    2. microwave for 2 mins (creating oaty hot water)
    3. mix in all soy powder and properly mix, until all the
    powder is mixed into the water and you end up with something that actually, just looks like regular oats.
    4. push that oat/protein mix to one side of the bowl.
    5. fill other side with frozen fruits and top with almond milk
    6. Put a scoop of peanut butter on the side and drizzle all over with maple syrup.

    I just had my dietician appointment yesterday so I'm planning on starting my own low FODMAP journey at the end of the week once I've got my head around things and been shopping.
    I just wanted to say that all the booklets she gave me state oats and oat milks as suitable. I'd hate for you to miss out on your Oatly fix unnecessarily.
    Best of luck in the coming months.

      Apple Fall Tree aw thank you for the tip! One book I have say it's not but the Monash App, which is obviously more up to date, says I can have 1/8th of a cup (30ml) 🙏🙏 yay! Admittedly I'm more of a latte-girl but I'd still enjoy an oatly cortado given the chance 😅
      How are you feeling about starting? I found the long lists of "red" foods so daunting at the beginning but once you have a few tasty recipes to fall back on it's very doable x

    My friend first introduced me to low FODMAP ways of eating because of her own IBS. I've found your videos really helpful at understanding more about it, so thank you for sharing! Having cooked for her a few times I've found it really interesting realising that things like garlic and onions aren't as necessary as I once thought. Also seeing this haul has made me realise I can probably feed her lots of sushi in the future.

    • @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject
      @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, you can never go wrong with sushi! I've also found it really interesting cooking without onion and garlic, looking back I think I relied on them a lot as an easy way to make a meal tasty. But actually there are so many other great savoury things you can add and they don't overpower the other ingredients. It's really kind of you to be researching how to cook for her btw! :)

    How are you with beans now? I’m on a venture into vegetarianism and have followed a lowfodmap diet before, ( whilst still eating meat. I discovered onions are one of my worst IBS triggers, as well as dairy.) I want to eat more beans, but because of chronic Ibs I am scared. I was wondering if you have experimented with beans, and have discovered you can eat them more with time?

      Great question! I've experienced a huge amount of improvement with both beans and onion. It's been several years but by slowly increasing portions I feel like I've rebuilt my tolerance. You could focus on legume which are easier to digest like canned butter beans, chickpeas and red lentils to start

    What do you do when you have Gerd and need to limit acidic foods as well? Also, how about enough fiber when you have IBS-C or chronic constipation? It is comfusing. I will ask my GI Doctor about it and maybe a dietitian. I am underweight now because I get so bloated, acidy, etc. that I do not eat enough.

    • @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject
      @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GERD definitely makes it a whole lot harder and really should be done with the guidance of a registered dietician, so it's good you're asking your Dr about it. I've found in general I have to eat smaller amounts more regularly, which is inconvenient but does make me feel better, which should also be easier on your stomach. I have had a few people comment/message saying they also have GERD and manage, so it must be possible xx

    So are probiotics good or bad for this because it’s so confusing to me. Sourdough I thought you had said was good because it was partially fermented already but then in a different video you were talking about how fermentable foods are not good for low Fodmap. I’m probably just misunderstanding something but it’s all kind of making my head spin💯

    • @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject
      @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, I'll try to explain. So probiotics are living microbes we eat, e.g. naturally in sauerkraut or tablets/supplement drinks. Generally speaking the high quality supplement drink kinds can help ease IBS symptoms for some people, but only if they keep taking them. It's usually recommended to not take the supplement kind while you do the low-fo diet because it will obscure your "real" sensitivities.
      FODMAPs are specific fermentable fibres and sugars which seem to be an issue for people with IBS in bigger quantities because they ferment too quickly in our gut, but there are lots of other fermentable fibres which are often fine and very good for us.
      Foods which have already undergone some fermentation before we eat them, like wheat sourdough bread, can have less of a FODMAP in them, so they're less likely to ferment too quickly in our gut.
      Does make sense? It's annoyingly complicated!

    I’m not vegan but I have so many food sensitivity issues that I don’t think I could survive being a vegan. Lol! My doctor laughed when he saw my test results and said “you are sensitive to everything except fish, chicken, white potatoes, and oranges.” Can’t have legumes, soy, dairy, eggs, tomatoes, grains (oats included), or yeasts. I’ve been very strict with my diet for almost a year and just found out onions, mango, shellfish, and avocado just started bothering my gut.
    What the hell are white potatoes?
    Anyways, suspecting I have IBS. Will be asking my doctor to test me for it.
    Uncertain on what to make without all the things I can’t have. Is it possible to be vegan without soy, legumes, and grains? Lol

      MyLife 2.0 MyLife 2.0 oh man, that really sucks! Especially when you don’t have a clear answer why you’re sensitive to so many things. Since this video I’ve learnt to eat very well without animals products, legumes, some grains and soy (plus high FODMAP veggies) but I can see with all your additional sensitives you’re running out of options!
      Is your dr helping you in any other ways besides restricting your diet further? E.g. probiotics xx

    • @Beafree
      @Beafree 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carrie Gill honestly no, my doctor hasn’t really told me anything. Early on after the test I tried going vegan so started eating quinoa but was still having issues. He told me my gut was obviously messed up quinoa was not a wise choice for someone like me.
      Anyways he hasn’t directed me at all. I’ve tried going to other doctors but they seem just as clueless. I’m seriously treating myself or trying to figure this out on my own. Was looking into enzymes and probiotics but not sure which is best.

      A lot of people who have trouble with most legumes can find edamame to be less bothersome. Also canned lentils that are well rinsed can be ok. Both of those are lower fodmap too and are great ways to get protein without bothering most people's stomachs. Even though edamame is soy it seems to bother people a lot less than other forms of soy.

      Hi Sandra ☺️ I can honestly say, yes I do! I'm still learning my "limits" for some FODMAPs over the course of several days, but generally, I don't get really bloated/an upset stomach anymore (unless I've knowingly overindulged in something)... You know, I've not really thought about how different I feel until now 🤔 It's strange because before what my stomach was up to used to dominate my thoughts so much and now it rarely does. Are you thinking of it giving it a go? x

      Carrie Gill Thank you so much for answering :) and yes I'm devinetely giving it a try because I don't konw what otherwise would help. I'm from Germany and since I spend my holidays in Tunisia last year my stomach goes crazy. I tried so many things and my doctor says I have the IBS Syndrom because after many physical examinations I'm at least "healthy". And as you said, there are days where you forget about the symptoms and have a normal life but then there are days where you you have stomach cramps and all these pain :(
      Do you have any tips and tricks for the beginning? (Sorry for my english, hope you understand it anyways) :)

Also that lupin is possibly the worst thing I can eat and I end up looking 8 months pregnant within half an hour of eating Tesco's own brand free-from ice cream cones.

    Wtf....I came here to learn something but instead I just kind of stared at the screen and fell in love. At the end I had absorbed absolutely nothing 🤪. Groovy!

    This was a really helpful video, thank you so much. As another low FODMAP vegan who started today - and also worries how she'll get her calories in - I'm still a bit overwhelmed and often confused when I find contradicting information on food. Luckily, my nutritionist is very helpful (and responsive!). I'm so motivated to give my tummy its well-deserved rest (which I deserve too!) and will be sharing recipes on my blog (soon) and photos of what I eat on IG (www.aliciouslog.com / instagram.com/aliciouslog).
    Looking forward to more of your videos (actually just watched your "What I eat in a day", that's how I found you).
    Best regards from Vienna, Austria,
    Alice

      Aw thank you! I just followed your Instagram 😀 I'lm looking forward to seeing your recipes! I'd definitely recommend the Monash FODMAP app, I'm guessing your nutritionist probably has too, as the best source of info on the FODMAP diet as they are the original researchers and creators. How is your first day going? x

      Thank you! Makes it much easier to follow you back on IG :)
      Yes, I downloaded the app and cross-checked it with the list I received from my nutritionist (who's also vegan - makes things so much easier!) as she said that while some veg were low FODMAP in Australia they were medium or even high in Europe. Who would have thought?
      My first day is going ok in that I'm eating while trying not to eat to much at once just feeling a little bit hungry all day. Will have friends over for dinner though so there's a lot of looking forward to a not-too-big bowl of carrot and parsnip risotto :)

      So frustrating isn't it! I did feel better in other ways, like I had so much more energy for running, but my IBS took a hit before I knew about FODMAPs 😖

    Doing some research and stumbled upon your channel. I subscribed and I'm eager to learn! Does this mean that you have to be high fat lower carb? I have been doing high carb low fat. There's something that's causing me ibs symptoms a couple hours after a meal not processed that i cook myself. I don't know where to start to find out what it is?

      Hi Yvonne, I'm so happy to hear you've just discovered the lowFODMAP diet! It's been almost a year for me now and it's changed my life so much. It shouldn't change your macros at all, just the amount of specific fermentable sugars and fibres in your food. I'd recommend watching the video I made called "The Low FODMAP Diet Protocol Explained". You can find it here under the "Course Curriculum" section xx
