NEW Penn Tidal Beach rod Review - A rod for All ?

  • Can a Sea Fishing Beach rod do it all ? Today i test the Penn Tidal Entry level Beach rod. Aimed at the U.K Angler with its Variety of Marks and Conditions, we put it to the test an see what you get for your money.
    I think its more relevant to ask what you get for your money rather than set a budget. At each price point for Beach rods there is Value to be found.
    The Penn Tidal 14ft is a rod for someone who perhaps only fishes with one rod. Its tip will pick out the small bites and it can winch in a Bigger Quarry too.

    Great video & review Matt. Looks like a good bit of kit. I never go over 4oz leads with my Conti rods, but if I had the need to, this rod would be top of the list. Shame about the cracked ring. Smacks of poor packaging/handling if it occured during delivery.
    I might have mentioned this before, but there has been lots going on here this year, and I just haven't found the time for TH-cam that I used to. Still grateful for your emails though, and glad to know you are doing OK. Stay safe & well, Dave. 🎣🎣👍👍

    Hi Matt bought 2 tidal 10oz arrived and both rods had damage to the rod rings one had the top eye bent with the insert hanging off, the second had a bent ring with the insert missing. Rods were packed as normal in solid rod tube. Due to illness rods were not used straignt away but a good few months later so had gone pass the returns time, had to have both rods fixed before using for the first time, sent an email to penn but never heard anythink back, good rods but very weary of rings failing.

      Hello mate, thanks for all your support over 2023 as always I appreciate these comments. I will ask around about the travel rod because it’s something a few people have been asking about. I guess most people use lighter rods in their warmer destination. There must be something available though with Norway a popular destination for example.

    A good review. I've been using a couple of Penn rods, a Rampage II Bass 11'6 2-4oz and a Squadron II Euro Surf 14' 4-6oz. I've been looking a rod that will cast a heavier lead, but like a few others have commented I much prefer 3 piece for transport. Some great deals about, and I've just pushed the button on the Penn Tidal XR 14' 3-piece for under £120 (inc. delivery).

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good work ! It used to be the case that a three piece effected the rods action and they were thought of as kids rods. As you know a lot has changed in rod building technology with no difference to the action of the blank. However with budget two piece rods you do get a bit more for your money than the three piece of a similar price. Interesting you mention that Bass rod - I haven’t owned one for years. But now I’ll look them up and dream ! Good input thanks

    • @George_Salt
      @George_Salt 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@SaltwaterAngler I'm not one for matched pairs of rods. I think of them like golf clubs and prefer to have one rod for the conditions and one that's "close enough" to fish alongside it. The bass rod is a decent compromise for travelling in the motorhome. It will cast a float, or a heavy lure, or a string of mackerel feathers, or cast a shore rig from the beach, rocks or pier. It just struggles to hold ground in a rougher sea or cast in windier conditions with the lighter lead.
      The one thing you get more of with a 2-piece is length. The difference between two 7' sections and three 4'8" sections is substantial when space is limited.

    Hi Matt, Great review. I currently fish with two Penn Tidal XR390 3 pce rods matched with Daiwa 35 QD FS reels. Cant fault the 390's for price point and fishability. Great for casting and bite detection and I believe the new 2 pce has a slightly stiffer tip so I am certainly considering an "upgrade". Thanks for your impartial review.!!

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for adding this - very helpful Stiffer tip is desirable in most rods as you say. We can get it all now as stiff tips still register the bites . Will check out the Daiwa 35s as I’ve not used them before

    what rod do you recommend for fishing after pier?

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on your methods - float, lure or bottom fishing but actually a 12/13 ft beach rod will be fine on most uk piers. I used to like a flatty fanatic or even a carp rod as long as a 3oz lead can sit in the tide.

      Yes it will work o.k for mackerel but my choice would be a rod that is suited to 3oz

    Why you tell porkie pie about where you fitted the reel? First you fitted it at armpit length then at end the reel as a good foot further up the handle.

      Whooaaa good observation 🤣! Just playing around with the balance of the rod, but if your sizing up a rod for the first time I’d stick with the arm pit method.

    Dommage que pour une video de présentation d une canne nouveau modéle .on montre une canne avec la ceramique d un anneau casser .... Too bad that for a video presenting a new model cane, we show a cane with the ceramic of a broken ring....

    You can get this rod here.... www.gerrysfishing.com/product/penn-tidal-beach-caster-13ft-4-8oz/ Im not being paid to say nice things. Gerrys sent me the rod to try and as you can see i've given it my honest opinion. I can vouch for the value of the Penn as well as Gerrys as a company.

    sorry mat , but you are better than this. You do not need to do useless tackle reviews in my opinion, but good effort. Not what you want to hear , but hey ho. tis what it is .

      No need to apologise- not sure why it’s useless though. Very often Friends here on the channel request reviews and it will be of value to many. There is a wider audience for fishing style blogs. I enjoyed trialing a new rod. Thanks for the comment

      I disagree with that. It gives a non biased 'review' from an angler not trying to sell it.

      I think your tackle reviews are very helpful to be honest. I solely bought a reel because of one, so I’d ignore Eric’s comment

      Who does not find a tackle review interesting?? Great see a non sponsored angler reviewing tackle honestly. It is an expensive sport these days. Great stuff 👍
