I'm 73...my dad was a truck driver; I put myself through college driving a moving van on weekends. Then I went into the trucking industry, first continuing as a union driver, then into sales and management, for the last 50 years until I retired last year I put three kids through college, without debt, purchased three houses, and live in one now that's paid for. It's hard but HONEST work and I am never ashamed to tell people my story.

I've been a truck driver since 1968 when I was 18. Pulling dry vans, Swinging beef reefers, Flatbeds, Tankers dry and wet, and dump trailers of all kinds. Been an Owner Operator and company driver. Back in the day, truck drivers were respected and made a good paycheck. They wore clean long sleeved shirts, blue jeans, jean jackets, and boots. Most were clean shaven, some had mustaches and/or goatees. They all carried themselves with pride. I used to be proud to say I was a truck driver!
Have you been in a rest area or truck stop lately? Most drivers are unkempt, dressed in sweatpants, wear flip flops, shaggy dog looking beard wearing, uncut hair, and non -English speaking refugees. They open their cab doors and a load of trash and piss bottles fall out. THIS is the image the American public sees every day! So you wonder why truck drivers are considered Low Class? Because most of them ARE! Nowadays I say I'm in Transportation or Logistics, don't want to be associated with those other Maggots.
YOU would be better off just saying you are a Businesswoman in Transportation... get less flack that way!

People also look down on farmers Truck drivers and farmers are the backbone of the country. If it weren't for truck drivers farmers couldn't get their crops to market. Trucks are vital for food, fuel ,seed and other things needed to grow food. Trucks haul everything necessary to build our homes and roads. I see a lot of videos where truck drivers complain about being stopped to have their trucks inspected for any safety violations. It's for their safety as well as other motorists. Love watching your videos. I have learned a lot about dumptrucks and especially the pup trailer. I've had always wondered how they work. Hope to see you back on the road soon 😊

Been a subscriber for along time. Now retired pilot. But I drove on days off, or filled in for drivers with different companies. They are a large difference the way we pilots are treated, than how I was treated as a truck driver! Some of the handlers or bosses on the docks act like you don’t know nothing, and treat you like crap. I want to wipe the floor with several! But keeping my cool, and just wanting to get unloaded and get away, I kept my mouth shut. I filled in for a while after retiring, then got tired of being treated like I was from a 3 world country. I totally agree. 10 years ago I restored a w900 just because I always wanted one. After I finished it, I applied for my own authority. I just wanted to run some loads from time to time. I was amazed at how poorly I was treated for being the driver everywhere I went.
Because of my other life, I would end up at events and get togethers with people with doctorate degrees. Most all of them play chess. Throughout the party I would tell everyone I am a truck driver. When they pulled out the chess board they would ask if I have ever played. I would just answer how do the pieces move. They would explain how the pieces work. Then, my truck driver self would checkmate all of them! I loved crushing thier egos!!

Truckers were professional drivers, proud to wear uniforms, keep their trucks safe, clean, provide roadside assistance. Now, hate to say the majority drive unsafe trucks, drive side by side at the same speed for miles, leave “apple juice jugs” in parking lots. It's so heartbreaking 💔 to hear this is a world over perception. If people can only realised that it's you and all the other truck-drivers who makes the economy turning and put food on the shelves of the shops so we can buy it. Just last night I was chatting with a friend of mine busy loading sulphur at a plant that's been needed in the industrial world. It's a so much needed product in certain industries and if he and colleagues can't do this highly dangerous job of driving this bomb on wheels who will do it - so people must stop there nonsense and change their minds.

As far as I can remember, it was always considered a "Last Resort" occupation, not one anybody would actually choose, mostly do to the lousy conditions of an OTR lifestyle. Meaning everything else failed. After the non-union, low paying jobs became prevalent, truckers were just considered steering wheel holders and a dime a dozen. Orientation's were weekly and companies saw such high turnover, they started treating the workers badly, further exacerbating the turnover problem. Trucks were old and loads were sparse. Drivers would sit for days with no load and not making money. Just overall not desirable.

I started driving at eighteen for Wickes Lumber. I tried OTR, and found it miserable( after six weeks). Came back home started plowing snow part-time, was then hired full-time the next July, thirty plus years later, still on the job with everything paid off. People laugh at us public works guys/gals, but without us they would be stuck in the middle of the road, also no water or sewer services. Since our trucks are multi-taskable we consider ourselves "Truck Operators ". My Grandfather was a Teamster until the day he passed, thanks to him Grandma still has a roof over her head, and both Mom and my Aunt went to college. The problem with the trucking industry is the cut rate prices, and the foreigners working for peanuts, doing stupid stuff. 99% of truck drivers are top notch professionals. Unfortunately the few ruin it for the many.

For someone to tell you that trucking is a low class job ask them how their food made it's way to the supermarket. How was their car delivered to the dealership. How did the asphalt get put down on the roadways they drive on.

My buddy Rick Linneman was a long hauler, owner/operator out of Wyoming for nearly his whole life. When he started talking about how the public does not understand trucking, he would always say, "The only thing in this country that isn't delivered by trucks at some point, is babies!"

I agree with you Dauminique, about everything & I agree with both of you about the tag axles, Canada should allow rigs & dump trucks to have tag axles because they help trucks when they have a heavy load on them & I would like to see a electric tag axle it might look pretty cool 😎 & what both of you said about the truck driver's I agree & I sure hope that they hurry up &get your dump truck finished & call you to go pick it up so you can get back to work driving & I hope that you make another video soon because I like watching your videos & say hello to Bobby for me & when are you going to be making another video at the auction because I like seeing the trucks & equipment they have

    Hello,
Canada and the USA are very good neighbors but are very different in important ways like medical expenses. In Canada it's free, so we don't go bankrupt when someone gets sick or injured but we are buried in expensive bureaucracy and it's paid for by taxing the population. In the US taxes are much less so it evens out I guess. We drive the same type of trucks and do the same work and have similar problems with some companies operating cheap trucks and drivers with no experience operating on the same roads and Highways. That is scary especially if your off highway logging!

Speaking of the union I reside in NC most recently a union employee was fired after 9 years of employment history but this is a new union established location. There was a paper trail of documentation of data useage not followed while completing procedures to iclude safety violation/s . My opinion this situation should've went in a different direction, decertification for task procedures not followed accordingly to data instructions , employee should've taken ownership of the event's and requested remedial training. Union has a grace period of 5 days to file a grievance but that had expired but still there are legality avenues that the employee can take.

When the F did this shift happen? 25 years in the paving/triaxle game and this is what is happening. WTF. Derivers are the scum of the earth to their own crews now. It wasnt always this way.

I like that electric rear end that is being developed. It would not be hard to do diesel electric trucks to powered those axels. Locomotives have been doing that for years with diesel electric to power those big motors to drive those train wheels and they move massive loads for a very long distance. Plus there's the benefit of fuel efficiency there too.

As someone who has worked union jobs, I hate unions. The best job I've ever worked was a non-union job. Unions are like middle-men, they just add expense and waste into the whole process and they aren't required if the employer wants to be a company that retains employees and makes others covet working for them. If they don't, then they should go downhill until their reputation puts them out of business. The only place unions still have relevance is in small towns at the town's single big employer where employees can't utilize the power of being able to leave for a different job.

There are good and honorable truck drivers. I’ve had my Class A for nearly 30 years. I’ve driven OTR, local, dedicated, and drove race transporters for NASCAR Race Teams for a few years. I’ve been there, and done that, and gave most of the tshirts away. The problem I have with many drivers anymore is a generally selfish, entitled attitude. Look where trucks park…trash everywhere. There’s no honor in that. Drivers block driveways at truck stops, leave their trucks at fuel pumps for 20-30 minutes. Some stuff has been going on since I started. Some shippers and receivers treat drivers like animals (some drivers are, but most are decent). You sit in a cage at some facilities with no access to rest rooms. I’m glad I drive local for a supply company. We serve our customers, and I’m home every night. I don’t make as much, but I have a home life and my Harley gets ridden 9-10k miles /year.

I grew up in a sawmill family north of Seattle and I also worked in the woods. Is the 'no dead axles' rule a Canadian thing? I knew that tag and drop axles were available in the US, but they were uncommon. I now live in Sweden and the whole trucking industry is completely different here than the US and Canada. I will not go into much detail, but the differences in Sweden very numerous and are quite unusual. All the bridges, overpasses and utilities are set much higher. I have not measured the height of the log trucks, but they look to be about 17' or 5+ meters. Also, I have yet to see a single set of weigh scales. They drive all winter long and pull some very long and heavy loads. I'll bet that at least 80% of all heavy trucks are set up with tandem axles, with a single driver and a drop axle. I honestly do not know how they do it with 4 months of their driving is on compact snow and ice. Their freight system is amazing. You can get almost anything shipped from anywhere to anywhere in Sweden within two days; three days at the most. The Swedes have really figured out how to make work work. I do not know what the percentage of drivers are women in Sweden, but it is A LOT. I'll bet that it is at least 15% and I have no idea what it is in the US.
I've driven close to 2,500,000 miles in my life in all manner of vehicles and I have never had an 'at fault accident.' I've been hit several times, but I've never hit anyone. I had a great 1988 Peterbilt 377 with a Cummins 444 and an RTOO14618 that I used in my log home design/build business. I wasn't driving full-time and long haul was not my primary employment. The truck was originally a lumber long hauler up and down the west coast. It was then converted to a dump truck. When I bought it, I set it up with a quick change system so I could run as a dump truck with and without my equipment trailer or go to a fifth-wheel and pull my 43' aluminum flatbed. I live about an hour east of Portland, Oregon and traffic just kept getting worse and worse. It got to the point where the fun was gone from driving. Every day I was going to drive, I'd do my mechanical check, then fire up, and do the electrical/light check. I'd then climb in and sit there until air came up. It got to the point where I would sit there and think, "Is to day the day? Is today that some idiot pulls a stunt where I have to choose to hit a car with kids in it or put my truck into a guardrail or in the ditch or over a bank just to avoid killing some idiot that was not paying attention. I'll bet that if you checked to see who was at fault for any car versus truck accident, you would find that 90% of the time, it was the car that caused the accident. Too often, it is the truck that gets blamed. I finally sold my truck and trailers. I miss not having the truck, but not the stress of too many vehicles on the road.
I really enjoyed your conversation about companies, wages and images. What you were talking about is what I grew up around in our sawmill business. Dad and Mom knew that we were nothing without our employees. They took good care of our crew and many of the things they did were the nonmonetary things that they could help with to make their lives easier. They were what I call 'Eisenhower Republicans.' If you want a really good read sometime, google '1956 Republican Party Platform." It will amaze you. Any more, we have it exactly ass backwards. Unions saved the US, but they could be what kills the country too. On thing that really pisses me off is the attitude that many union members have of, "F**k you! I got mine, go get your own." What they don't realize is that, "If it isn't working for all of us, it isn't really working for any of us." And don't get me started on the sleep apnea issue!
I realize that times have changed, but we need to make some big changes in our educational system. I learned to work at an early age. Now it seems that no one wants to sweat or get dirty. What a lot of young people don't get is that there is a certain dignity in work well done. The attitude toward people in the trades is very, very different here in Sweden. The false class consciousness issues that are in the US do not seem to be here. I put myself through college and have several degrees, but I have spent my entire life in a blue collar world. Getting a college education does not consign you to 'a life under LEDs' by any stretch of the imagination. I love to work. It keeps me in shape mentally and physically. I never have had a concept of retirement. If you don't love what you do, why the hell are you doing it?! If you love what you do, why would you ever stop doing it.\
Keep up the excellent work. I love what you're doing. Remember, "It all comes down to physics," "Never bet against gravity because it has no conscience." and "Everything is a tool to a chimpanzee."

There is an issue with modern automatic transmissions, the manufactures have removed the dipstick from most of them
So in order to get the tranny fluid level checked, you either take it to dealer or hire a tech whom is in the know.
Add that issue in on top of the abuse passenger most vehicles suffer, and these machines will fail.
As you are well aware of Dominique. an expensive commercial truck will become unreliable and broken in short order if not constantly maintained.

I did 25 years in a fuel truck in Puget Sound. I hated every minute of it. Its not that its not a respectable job but its not a nice job. Shitty traffic, middle managers, crappy dispatchers, whiney customers, standing in the rain all night, breakdowns, rushing around for no reason, standing in the rain all night, cleaning up leaking fittings, more shitty customers whining about this or that, unexpected days off, ridiculous job sites you cant get into but you have to fill the tank or else, mechanics who cant change a lightbulb let alone fix a kingpin or an engine that wont idle, other drivers trashing the trucks. Uniform allowances are gone. Health insurance is unaffordable. Companies merge and senority is lost. Working days off to make up for lost days during the week. Our union was completely useless but they took money out of every check. Then the cameras came, 4 outside, one inside watching the driver, trucks autobraking then you get bitched at cause the truck braked. And. I was making the same money (80k) that I was making in 1998-2000. Did RN school and make more money working 3 days a week, zero BS, flexible sheduling, free healthcare, can go to the bathroom any time I want. Also fuck 167. Seriously.
