Veteran Forester Pat Connell takes us on the ground of the lightning caused 350,000 acre Bitterroot Fire of 2000 and explains the relationship between Mother Nature, forest management, fire and logging. And, as if the 2000 fire wasn't enough, he shows us a real environmental disaster in the making...

Helicopter logging started in the 70s . We had real logging air crafts then the Boing 107 Sikorsky 61 both 11thousand lb max turn... kinda...Bell 214 8thousand lb max turn and more if needed kinda as well And the sikorsky 64 a 20 grand Mac at end of cycle and sooner if elevation is not hi. I hooked a lot of time under a 107
...&214&way to much under the 64&61 and I have a word for the forest ranger and r&r Conner Erickson Air crane Columbia helicopters Siller Brothers Croman corp and a few more companies Anyone of those out fits flew more timber in a year then r&r corner will fly in3yr. They ain't heli logging there heli brush thinning

Wicked to hear Will, were you rigging up in coastal BC by any chance or where ya Oregon Washington area? Have been around alot of different project operations with, S64, 61, Kamov, Kmax, bell 214, 107 and chinook. Completely different operation styles these guys Obviously are not going to be slinging as much wood as Croman, Erickson, VIH or any other major heavy lift company they just simply don’t have the helicopter capacity to fly wood like that, are a small business running 2 Huey’s it looks like, still heli-logging none the less. Different approach to taking wood off the hill and makes sense if they can make a go of er flying small pieces with small helicopters, wood flying is never a bad thing in my eyes.
