I camped at the base and did this hike as a teenager in the early 2000’s. The night before the hike, a group of us friends went to the bathroom late at night. Unknowingly, we left one of our friends behind in the bathroom without a flashlight. He ended up sleeping in there on the diaper changing table because he couldn’t find his way back to our camp without a light. We felt so terrible the next morning when we found out, but he did the hike the next morning and it’s now one of our favorite stories from our teenage years.
Good video! I was there in April, I'm 70 years old with COPD, but I try to keep in shape, we took the other short trail then. If I get back that way in the next year or two I might give it a shot, this was inspiring!
I hiked it recently on my every other year visit to Arizona. For some reason it was a bit harder at age 55 than it was at age 35. Must have been from all the Mexican food I ate......right?
GLOVES DUDE ! Boots rather than shoes (lots of ankle breakers on trail) and no hiking poles are my recommendations. I've done the hike/climb 3 times and would ALWAYS without exception wear light/medium gloves. I'm 61yo and live in Phoenix and may have 1 more ascent in me. But living with vertigo now, thanks to a bad experience on Mt. Elden, so maybe/maybe not. This is one of my top 3 climbs in Arizona.
I forgot my gloves, but they definitely come in handy on this hike. So what are your other 2 top climbs? I gotta say I prefer Battleship Mountain and Brown's Peak over Picacho. Spicier and better views. Still, this is a fun one.
@@JerryArizona - In 30 years, I've barely scratched the surface. But I measure my ascents of Picacho on one hand and everything else I've done at least a dozen times. Mount Elden is a great advanced climb - I went up there some years ago on an extremely windy day and that was when I acquired vertigo that I still experience a couple of decades later. If you want a short in-town trail, my exerhike trail is the Devastator Trail in Phoenix, which is a great short, sharp shock experience (more unrelenting than the Mormon trail on 24th st). th-cam.com/video/Q8txqAshvW8/w-d-xo.html
Another great video Jerry! There definitely were some "sketchy parts" near the top - glad they had the cable barriers to limit loss of life. Hope the shoulder is healing quickly. Thanks
I read the description! 😆 Love your content! We're taking our first family trip to AZ at the end of the month and I feel well prepared having binge watched most of your videos lol Thanks for sharing your adventures 😊
As much beauty as Jerry and Tina show in these videos, there SO MUCH MORE amazing scenery too be seen in Arizona (or any of the other of the 4 corners States). Nevada has some great stuff too. 🏜️✌️🖖
May I suggest a few others if you have time. Wave cave in the Superstitions is my go to when friends come in from out of town. If you’re heading up north, possibly Fossil Creek or Hanging Gardens at West Clear Creek. If your around Sedona Soldiers Pass or we just did a backpacking trip to West Fork. Google these and you may have to extend your visit to our beautiful state! And Jerry, thanks for taking us along again, hope all is well! Happy Hiking!
Your videos seemed to disappear for a while. I just finished Beth Rodden’s new book, and started looking for climbing videos of the routes she was on, and viola! Your back!
It's got a bit of scrambling to it and it's not easy, but it's not that bad either. If you don't have a problem with heights and can make the elevation, go for it.
Hope the arm is getting better. I do enjoy the channel a lot, helps me get through longer days at work. One thing I'd been curious about is how much you prepare for longer trips, or if (when you're not injured/recovering) you're usually active enough to not need extra preparation. This getting older guy really wants to get back into hiking but I'm gonna have to prepare some for anything more strenuous. Only good thing I have going for me is I don't have a lot of weight I need to shed, I just need to be in much better shape, this whole working on a computer all day thing doesn't help :D
For the more strenuous stuff, I try to get in some training. Best training is hiking, but when I can't do that, I'll use a stair stepper or just a step box. This hike was actually a training hike for stuff coming up. I'm lucky enough to live in a city that has plenty of mountains in it, so finding training hikes isn't hard. Well, at least until around now when the temps start getting stupidly hot.
I was supposed to do this with a friend but I had to bag because of a shoulder injury. Once she did it she said, “you would have hated it.” Understatement of the year. Thx for confirming.
Gotta love a good via ferrata. A climber I know (Aaron Collins) has been putting one up in the Christopher Creek area. I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet.
Nice! Not sure I could do that sketchy part. Wow. PS- I always read all your descriptions if it makes you feel any better 😂😂 but I’m also what my husband calls “detail oriented” 🤷♀️😊
Whoa! Turning around might be a problem. Your touch of nature shoots are always welcome... I love to hike ~ but my back and hip problems keep me here ~ watching others hike. I do know sore! Always enjoy your hikes. Hey ~ how are your best buds? Guess they have been hole slotting these days ~~ or doing something crazy. I mean Eric and the other crazies... do any of them have a youtube channel? Thanks Jerryee.
Old Eric gets out sometimes, but seems to have been domesticated quite a bit by his girlfriend. Young Eric is probably hanging off a cliff in Sedona right now. Last time anyone saw Nick he was paddling off a waterfall somewhere in the backcountry. Hopefully by this fall my arm will be back to fully functional and I can hang with them again.
I did this a few months ago, I didn't have a lot of difficulty with it but I do remember the disappointment of reaching the saddle and then losing most of that elevation gain in a short amount of time. IMO seeing it on video makes it look scarier than it really is, I'll probably do it again on my next trip to AZ.
@@JerryArizona I love Browns Peak. I have not had the opportunity to do Battleship, it's on my bucket list. Do you remember how many hiking miles Happy Canyon was?
As this kind of being my home mountain, he is NOT lying about the downhill after the saddle section being steeper than it looks. The cables aren't there for looks, it would pretty much just be rock climbing in a lot of sections without those there and as always the GoPro makes it look flat lol. Sweet hike but be prepared for a tough workout and to be scared for your life at a few parts, particularly at the spots at 2:40 and 3:30
Very funny with the catch fences for careless hikers, I've never seen anything like it in Europe. It might be a wonderful spot for a via ferrata instead of these fences. But nice hike and nice video, many thanks from Germany Martin
If I had to rate fun scrambles around Phoenix, it would be this (favorite to least favorite): Brown's Peak, Battleship Mountain, Flatiron, Picacho, Picketpost. Picacho is fun to do, but the views just aren't as epic (and the spicy parts not as spicy) as Brown's or Battleship. I still recommend it though.
Wow much scarier than I would have thought. Have you hiked Picket Post Mountain in Superior? Its not as difficult but definitely a challenge at least for me who had only hiked up Silly Mountain. I would suggest hiking it when it cools down.
Beautifully shot, Jerry! This is exactly what I was looking for so thank you for recording the sketchy section. BTW, what camera gear do you use? I love the colors. Thank you.
Hey... give yourself some credit sir. You are 25% less efficient without use of all 4 limbs so the fact that you can do this post op during recovery is in itself commendable!
All these years I looked over at the trail while driving on the I-10. Now I’m intrigued. Always thought it a “boring, noisy hike so close to the traffic.”. WRONG.
Bei uns in old Germany sagt man: "Das muss ich nicht haben!" In English: " I mustn´t have that!" Okay, I´m 80 and even as a silver or golden surfer, there are safer places in AZ (and in your videos).

Probably. I seemed to have the same issue. Last time was much easier. Maybe they've raised it over the years?
Junk food😊
Looks like angel's landing. Not for me but thanks for taking me along and glad you made it safely.
Nice! Good to see you out there. Good luck with the continued recovery.

Wow , that beautiful ❤
Picachu peak is always sick, keep up the hard work and adventures 😎🤙
Another great video Jerry! There definitely were some "sketchy parts" near the top - glad they had the cable barriers to limit loss of life. Hope the shoulder is healing quickly. Thanks
I've always wondered about the "sketchy" sections of this hike. Thanks for sharing, Jerry!
Look for TH-cam videos of people coming down this trail on bikes, for a new definition of "sketchy".

You should check out Razorback Ridge on the northwest side of the saddle, it looks like a cool hike without the crowds.
I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the suggestion!
Your videos seemed to disappear for a while. I just finished Beth Rodden’s new book, and started looking for climbing videos of the routes she was on, and viola! Your back!
I was out for shoulder surgery for a while, but I'm back out there at it again. Probably be a while before I'm canyoneering, but I'll get there.
This was fantastic upload my friend. Outstanding scenery 🔥🔥🔥

Good to see you out! Couch sitting is best enjoyed after a good hike.

I think I said a lot of four letter words the first time I got to that saddle. I do not like to give up elevation gain.
That's a Fun Trail. Love that Sketchy Stuff...................
Personally, I prefer Brown's Peak or Battleship Mountain over Picacho. Still worth doing at least once though.
@@JerryArizona I love Browns Peak. I have not had the opportunity to do Battleship, it's on my bucket list. Do you remember how many hiking miles Happy Canyon was?

really like the classical music

Now that you mention it, this would make a better via than a hike. Why didn't someone think of that already?
That looks badass! Its definitely going on the list

Wow much scarier than I would have thought. Have you hiked Picket Post Mountain in Superior? Its not as difficult but definitely a challenge at least for me who had only hiked up Silly Mountain. I would suggest hiking it when it cools down.
I've done Picketpost. Honestly felt the loose gravel in the 'chute' was more dangerous than Picacho. Been meaning to get back and hike it again.
Love the cabling!!..
It would be super sketchy without it, for sure.
Beautifully shot, Jerry! This is exactly what I was looking for so thank you for recording the sketchy section. BTW, what camera gear do you use? I love the colors. Thank you.
This was a GoPro 11 and Canon EOS R for the macro shots. The 11 is my favorite GoPro by far. Love the images from it, and its rugged.
Thank you Jerry! Btw you and Tina are doing some amazing hikes recently! I’m enjoying all your hikes!
Nice little hike with some spicy 🌶️ parts. Now you can have some Mexican food afterwards…
Picacho Peak is an excellent place to climb, but unfortunately there are many accidents. Months ago a man died there.
Yay! You went south for a change!
I probably won't try this one...maybe a decade ago. And oh yeah; I did read the description 😂, great music choice whatever it is.
Wow, very sketchy indeed! Surprised so many people make it up there.
Agreed. I didn't see anyone turn around that day. And it's pretty sketch in a few parts.
Wow some sections seem more sketchy than Angel's Landing :) Speedy recovery 🤘
It's not that bad. And the exposure isn't nearly as much as at Angel's.
Just what the doctor ordered! 🤣
I wonder how many people exercise the when in doubt chicken out philosophy on that trail. Hope your recovery is going well!
Never saw anyone turn around on this trail. It's not as bad as it looks, really.
it almost seems to qualify for a via Ferrata! Wow!
Hey... give yourself some credit sir. You are 25% less efficient without use of all 4 limbs so the fact that you can do this post op during recovery is in itself commendable!
No thanks. Was the down trail the same as the up?
Same trail. And yes, it's worse going down.
OMG....how the hell do you get down that thing😮
Very carefully. Going down is definitely worse than going up.
Hooray! Uh, he'll no!
All these years I looked over at the trail while driving on the I-10. Now I’m intrigued. Always thought it a “boring, noisy hike so close to the traffic.”. WRONG.
It's got some spicy parts. Not the best views with the highway right there, but it will keep you on your toes once you get to the saddle.
gloves... why did you do it without gloves? LOL Anyways, shoulder must be feeling better if you tackled Picacho which is awesome too see!
Bei uns in old Germany sagt man: "Das muss ich nicht haben!" In English: " I mustn´t have that!" Okay, I´m 80 and even as a silver or golden surfer, there are safer places in AZ (and in your videos).
That sketchy part is very sketchy!
