    Ive been watching lots of your videos over the last week or so, trying to learn excel for job interviews. I think this video has taught me the most and made me think ive cross the threshold from "novice" to "intermediate". Despite having learned about pivot tables and power query from your other videos, I think having to actually think about what formula im writing has moved me to the next level.

    Nice video Mike. IF function is like a "LOGIC BREAD". The entire purpose of this function is to hold other functions inside it together between it's two slices (opening and closing brackets) to deliver a tasty result.However the beauty of this function is it can even be used inside other function /s.Wonderful !!!

    I love that some of the Magic Tricks highlight important Excel skills. Like this one - although I have already completed the chapter on logicals from the Dragon videos, I have decided to watch this one as well. And I very much appreciate that many "must-knowns" are repeated across the excelisfun channel: cell references, formatting as a facade, proper data sets, cross-tabulation, no chartjunk, arrays etc. Excellent teaching. Thank you.

      @excelisfun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zt.5677 Well said, when you said: "Think Excel". In fact in the business, accounting, finance, data analysis, scientific world where people have to build models, if you do not complete see all tasks through the lenses of Excel, you are probably inefficient and not very good at your job. For each analytic task, you know you are good when you think in Excel; when you see all the parameters of a task, and as you think about solving the problem, the parameters fall into a spreadsheet and you see Excel formulas, functions and features to solve the problem.

    More of a theoretical than a Excel question, do you know WHY binary numbers are 1 and 0? Why is True = 1 and False = 0? Why is 1 and 0 used over any other numeric possibility?

    • @excelisfun
      @excelisfun  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well in Excel, FALSE = 0 ALL Other Non-Zero Numbers = TRUE. Try it. It works in all logical functions, Conditional Formatting and so on. But as Why Binary is 0 and 1. I am not sure, but probably because they are small... Anyone else know the history of that or the practicality of why all our devises are run by 0s and 1s?

    • @Sal_A
      @Sal_A 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@excelisfun Reason this was provoked was bc I read that Arthur C Clarke stated "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" and made me think of the binary system used in many devices. I believe numbers have meanings especially those in pairs (11, 22, 33 etc) and sometimes are used in wicked ways by numerologists, so just seeing if there is a correlation.

      Because our digital computers are all based on transistors, and they model only two states: current is blocked: zero, and current flows through: one. So they had to learn everything in base 2. Come back in a few decades (maybe just one?) and qbits and quantum computing will be more prevalent: they allow for more states and all at the same time as well (superposition).

      @@GeertDelmulle I looked into transistors and quantum physics and the more I'm researching about their founders Wolfgang Pauli and Paul Dirac the more I'm convinced that they had satanic beliefs, with statements like "God made the bulk, surfaces were invented by the devil". The eminent Jack Parsons, whom we associate with space satellites was openly a devil worshipper! This whole technology stuff is creepy and can see why Arthur C Clarke said what he said when you look into it....food for thought.

    Why are we still talking about the IF function when we have the more intuitive and efficient IFS function? Everyone knows that IF is obsolete and has completed its mission. RIP IF!

    • @excelisfun
      @excelisfun  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main difference between IF and IFS is that The IFS does not have a value_if_false, so you can never have an option that catches all others that do not match the previous TRUEs. So with IFS you always have to list all options. Both are good, but different.

    • @dannyleung2796
      @dannyleung2796 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Consider this example from Microsoft Office Support: =IFS(A2>89,"A",A2>79,"B",A2>69,"C",A2>59,"D",TRUE,"F"), the last condition "TRUE" catches all others that do not satisfy the prior conditions.

    • @excelisfun
      @excelisfun  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannyleung2796 Just like Microsoft to give a horrible example. They are idiots. That is a situation where VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP is MUCH more efficient. However, you comment about how you can force IFS to consider other situations is great! Thanks for the tip, Danny! P.S. I do have a video that compares and contrasts IF and IFS here: th-cam.com/video/BSArRLKeNaw/w-d-xo.html
