I think this is a pretty neat approach to it, but there are perhaps variations on this technique right here.

My family and I are so grateful that I get to do this.
The next "regular" video I'm working on is about casting my first articulated plastic figure with ball joints. That video turned out to be almost 40 minutes long, so I chopped these clips out of it to make THIS separate video, and keep the other video more focused on the frog figure.
That's why there's not the standard introduction in this one. Sorry if this video feels a little off to y'all! :D

I'm writing some kid-friendly books with animal characters and this has me thinking that maybe I should make some action figures of them using some of these methods. There doesn't seem to be many (any?) articulating figures of animals out there and even the fixed position ones are not the same relative scale.

@@TheCrafsMan Well, I want to work at Hasbro one day and make some Transformers figures that can change from a vehicle to a robot and back again. As you can imagine, ball joints are essential parts, so it's something I'm highly interested in.

Yay! Been totally obsessed with this method lately, thinking about it all the time. Love the videos lately, keep it up, man!
try making silicone copies of the Glyos peg that can be inserted into the peg spaces of your mold. That might work well. You might also try making some castings of the Glyos pegs with some of the tough resin you acquired.
You might also try a free program called MeshMixer to combine the Glyos peg model with your Craftsman figure. You may have to model your own peg as I'm not really sure where access to a peg model might be found.

Word of the day "finesity".
If the GLYOS joints are too complicated for some folks, how about drilling a shallow hole in the arm and shoulder and using some epoxy to attach a rare earth disc magnet in each side, then you have a magnetically articulated joint. Just remember to align your magnet polarities or your arms will be having arguments with your shoulders and will never want to stick together.
I was gonna say that too but maybe use a magnet for one side only cause i could swear spinning two magnets might lead to them repelling.
@@ucitymetalhead You can buy magnets where the poles are on opposite faces of the disc, they only repel if you flip the magnet, not rotate it.

Great Video as always. I was thinking if you didn't put the whole pegs in the arms after you cast the mold wouldn't the peg be cast anyway so you wouldn't need more pegs. Thanks for what you do and I'm so glad I found the TheCrafsMan!

I like figures with 10 joints which is the rist, arm(upper arm & lower), head, the waist has a lot of joints which is to move left and right and also the leg down(upper & lower) and the ankle too

About to get my Anycubic Photon S sometime soon and was interested in maybe making some Glyos compatible parts, this was super helpful! And now I know that Marty probably wouldn't be opposed to giving me some tips if I reach out, too.

Jokes aside, Onell Design was very smart in adding a simple piece called the Switch Pin, that tiny double-peg that you cut in half to add to your figure. Switch Pins are very, very common pieces, a small handful coming with most of the accessory sets like Axis Joints, Swing Joints, and the Hub. Matt Doughty knows how much people love to add Glyos functionality to anything and everything, and if you have enough Glyos figures you soon realize you also have ammassed a nice little stockpile of Swith Pins. ^_^ At that point, chances are you'll rarely be hurting for pegs to use for mods and making.

Standing him up on the resin 3d printer aint so bad as he takes up less room on the built plate meaning you can print 3 or 4 at once in the same amount of time.
That is a super good point right there. It's all about the height, so if you've go the resin, you might as well print a few figures. :D

Ive heard people say to use hobby lobby train torches for pegs because theyre slightly thicker and go to the right size after resin shrinkage...but I just looked at them and they dont have the little ridge on it so idk how well they work with joints that have that.

CrafsMan, are you talking about using the Glyos peg as a master to make the negative space then cast a 1 piece arm with peg then the body with the socket both in soft resin? That sounds like it would work well.If your going mixed media using cast resin and the Glyos pvc peg in the final product there might compatibility be issues.Got to admit I'm really looking forward to the Frog looking guy with Ball and Socket design.

Finished a commission for a client, it was a character for 3d print and for the arm joints he wanted to use magnets so just made holes to fit the magnet in each piece.
I can imagine a crafsman figure mixed with other parts to make a super crafsman figure.

This video was incredibly helpful - thank you! Would you consider making a brief video demonstrating how you go about chopping the glyos peg in half? Or could you at least tell me your process of doing that here in the comments?
Hey Yex! One thing you may appreciate, which was shared with me by a toy sculptor, is instead of cutting the peg in half (which is tricky to keep things flush and straight), consider shaving the collar off one half of the joint, drilling a matching hole in your figure/surface, and inserting that into it so that the peg is sticking halfway out, with the regular collar side out. VERY nice alternative right there. :)

To be honest, I get really nervous and intimidated about crowdfunding and such. I like to just make stuff and put it out there, with no lists and such. But I am talking with a US-based company about injection-molding. They approached me about it, I gave them some info, and I'm waiting to hear back, bracing for some expensive mold prices.
Another down-side is, I'm pretty sure they won't be able to do painting and packaging. I'm learning more and more why toy designers go with a China-based company for projects like this.
I'm pretty set on us hand-casting the frog figures, though.

@@TheCrafsMan I've been wondering about painting. Even with a clearcoat it can't be very durable. What if you painted the inside of the molds with colored resin, then cast the rest of the figure in the base color? The colored resin should bond to the filler to get a solid cast without actual paint, but the downside is you'd be mixing small batches of resin in each color other than the base, for each casting.
After watching these videos I ordered about 800$ worth of retro figures and molding clay, he makes me feel like I can actually do somethings

Oh Crafsman... Your figure needs a guitar and an amp. I'd suggest a Telecaster style guitar and a Marshall stack. Glyos peg on the back of the axe so he can twirl it around his belt buckle
You could then mold the final arm and cast arms with the peg built in, right?
Heyt! fantastic video. Couple of follow up questions just to clarify: Are you suggesting we use premade pegs? Thats what it seems you're suggesting but it seems missing from the explanation. I was watching thinking "okay but how do we make the pegs??"
Correct - I would use the existing PVC pegs. This will do a couple things: It will form the socket, and it will be a tough piece of plastic that'll likely work better for the joint than resin.

If you're 3d printing the figure can you somehow at least print the "recess" or hole in the bodies in the correct shape to receive the glyos pegs? I'm thinking if each pass of the printer is a "layer" like those slices of images frp, am MRI machine, the can't the needed indents or notches be shaped as the machine is spitting out the plastic?

couldn't you just cast the arm with a built in peg of whatever resin you use, but still do the torso as is, with the method you mention to create the socket in the torso?
would mean not needing to use loads of the seperate pegs?
That does make sense, but the PVC pegs are *super* tough. I have one or maybe two resins I've ever used that would come close, but even they might not hold up as well as these pegs.
So what you´re saying is i should buy abunch of glyos figures and copy them in order to make my own action figures like a space blt kots team or a free range vector jump guy?

Hey Crafsman! Have you ever used Ure-Fil with your resin? I'm about to act on my goal to sculpt, mold, cast and sell my own art and I am looking to make my sculptures feel like something you would get from a fancy Christmas store or a heavy ceramic tabletop piece from Hallmark. I know Ure-fil 3 is ceramic based and will give the cast a porcelain/ceramic feel to it and I was just curious if you've ever given it a shot. I have some pretty fine detail I'm worried about losing.
Make wax peg or soap pegs make your figure with resin and the soap or wax peg then when hard melt or wash out the peg maybe

Mr Crafsman, I know this question doesn't belong in this video but for the life of me, I could not figure out how to send you a message and I just wanted to know what tips, if any, you had for someone setting up a workshop and bench for the 1st time. I know you're a busy fella but I hope you can find a couple of minutes to reply. Thank you for all the inspiring video's that you make.
Hey Jerry! Or Jerry Raps! Mannn, I'm happy to help when I can. I'm curious what type of workshop and bench you're going for. I don't have a fancy setup. I've seen some NICE workbenches, with end vices, tool wells, and all that... traditional style. But I just took me some 2x4s plus 1" (3/4") wood material and made my benchtop. I didn't have enough wood to make legs on one of the sides, so I just ran angled 2xs down into the wall for bracing.
@@TheCrafsMan Well sir, the workbench is going to be 3'x8' and I plan to dim(do it myself) a soldering station(for tinkering projects, a small antique hobby sized vice(small) hot air gun, some place for a laptop and some sort of utility mat to cover the work surface. Drawing has been the extent of my artistry knowledge and now that my hand isn't so steady and my body insists that I get up and be more active, I intend to attempt many of the projects that you, yourself have made videos on with my own spins of course. And I was just hoping that you could maybe recommend some layout do's and don'ts, things that you wish you'd known when you first setup your workshop. I know this is long winded and I apologize, any help you can recommend is greatly appreciated.
