    Came back after some months, after I discovered you via this review Ben. Finally ordered my set today for my upcoming trip. It's even useful for a smaller, travel tripod to safely put away the geared head and the weight from top. Thank you again for your summary.

    Oh, that would be really useful for me! Thanks for showing us.
    I often need to take off my tripod head, but for slightly different reasons. One is travelling: my tripod doesn't fit into my suitcase with the head attached. The other is that I use my two tripods with a slider from time to time and for that I need to take my geared head off one of them and put simple ball heads on them so that I can mount the slider on them but still be able to balance it out. In that situation I would want two disc units I guess, one for each tripod head.

      I was thinking the same thing that this would be an awesome solution when working with a slider.

    love the Arca Swiss Quick Link set! So much easier than screwing the head off and on the tripod everytime!

    What a great product. I am always concerned I’ll damage my D4 geared head as well (infact I have dropped it out of the boot of the car before and scratched it badly). I can see the Quick Link set is available from Robert White in the UK for just under £150. Thanks for bringing this device to our attention. I’m really enjoying watching your channel after I saw you with Thomas Heaton in Death Valley.

    How interesting. Definitely seems like a useful tool on the field. I don’t have too much of an issue right now with my current tripod and ball head, but I do hope to one day upgrade to something similar to a Gitzo. These little tricks I’m sure make things a lot lot easier for you. Thanks for sharing Ben.

    I didn’t see if there was a safety locking mechanism. For example, would it come loose if you accidentally panned the camera? I have a systematic system and love just swapping plates but this does look like a great addition.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The breech lock design is very similar to a lens mount. When the plate is on the receiver, it can't spin, similar to how a lens won't spin on the lens mount once attached to a camera. The set screws prevent the disk from unthreading from the tripod head, and the the receiver from unthreading from the tripod. When those are set, it can't come loose. Also, it is very deliberate to attach and remove the tripod head. Though I show it with one hand in the video, I prefer to use two hands. There really isn't any way for it to come loose.

    i use a similar iFootage mechanism...and while it works, the spring loaded mechanism makes it a little inconvenient to use when switching heads. this seems better designed, albeit much more expensive.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, these aren't exactly cheap, but they're very well designed and I haven't had any issues in all the time I've used them. In addition to my still camera gear, I use these for my video kit so I can easily attach my slider to my tripod and then transfer the ballhead to the slider. Anything that makes the process faster and easier is worth it.

    Hi Ben, I was so impressed with the plate you reviewed, I tracked down the the Australian distributor and picked one up last week. A fantastic piece of gear. The only issue I have is the price, very overpriced piece of equipment!

    I remember feeling the same way about the bicycle seat "guts" of my BMX bike when I was a kid. The design was so dumb, and when they finally changed it in the late 90's, I was like, ...how did we send people to the moon, and yet take until now to figure out this new way of adjusting the angle of our bike seats?

    • @troyphillips1077
      @troyphillips1077 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Saville that was the wonder of the world. How did that configuration even get invented. It was so hard to deal with.

  • @Yamanotefy

    Hi Ben! Just a quick question as I received my QuickLink today and you may help me clarifying a potential issue: when you insert the disc can you fully rotate the receiver base so that the "flaps" of the disc are also fully covered by the outer ring? Mine gets 2/3 to 3/4 stuck. 2 of the 3 pins seem to slighty touch the upside of the rill at a specific point prior to be fully turned. Without the disc I could see that a thin slice of paper does not fit through the pins and the upper part. Thank you for checking.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yamanotefy When I got my sets, I had to turn it a bit in one way or the other until it was correctly oriented to work properly. It will rotate beyond the “limit” and you will feel some resistance. With my setup, I had to either tighten or loosen it an extra turn, beyond the point of resistance until it was ready to accept the receiver. It is tough to describe, but you will know when you have it oriented properly.

      @Yamanotefy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BenHorne Hi Ben! Thank you for your reply. I will try tonight on my tripod if the screw/unscrew mechanism works out when installed. The 2 pins certainly touch the upside when not mounted and prevent the disc to get fully locked.

  • @PaullindqvistSe

    @Ben Horne Thanx for the review, looks like a great solution! Is there any risk the system opens accidentally ? Can you walk with the tripod with head on, over your shoulder ? Or is there risk the collar opens up and the head falls off ?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul! Locking down the Quick-Link very purposeful and intentional, and the same is true for releasing it. I don't see any way that it would release accidentally unless it was never tightened to begin with - which would be a difficult to happen. I have indeed carried my 8x10 over my shoulder on the tripod while using the Quick-Links, so they have my vote of confidence. It's a very solid and simple design.

    I switch my systematic between a std plate for landscape and a geared column I use for work. The geared column is harder to remove so this would be a great solution, but I’m working with 10Kg scientific cameras on a Manfrotto 405 geared head. The quick links look a little small for that. Great for my landscape requirements though.
