- #88: We needed to replace the Square D pressure switch (30/50 PSI) on our Goulds well pump because it was rapid cycling or short cycling. Contacts had become pitted. We're not plumbing or well experts, but this is a pretty simple DIY project. +AMDG

I hate having to stop what I'm doing to make repairs, but there's nothing I hate more than having to make the same repair TWICE!!!! I keep a finger nail file handy (emory board) and and file down those points when needed until there's nothing left (I'm too cheap to keep replacing them)... But our water has so much iron in it that it usually destroys the rubber diaphragm below the points long before the points burn up, which also causes short cycling. Couldn't agree more - very frustrating having to repeatedly repair something. This well pump has been a HUGE blessing (our daughter won an FFA grant to fund it), but we've had issues with the pressure switch for numerous reasons since day one. I must admit though, some of it is likely my own fault - wanting to do everything possible myself and not hiring a plumber/well professional. That said, it is frustrating when the contacts would stick and you have no water. Hopefully, we have permanently solved the problem. Thanks, Randy, and God bless you and yours!

My pump's original pressure switch has the sensor pipe hard attached. So I need to get a new appropriate pipe to connect to my (2000 era Rona) pump. Not finding much googling, is there a name for that pipe?

Nice video except the part I was concerned with you didn't show! LOL How do you get the tubing on the bottom of the switch off? You showed putting it back on, but not taking it off! Maybe I don't have enough hand strength to unscrew mine, but I just cannot get it off! Can you Help? Thanks!
I get worried that switch is close and if ya bump it like I did on this furnace it was a spark and I taped over switch . But was very good info thanks

Normally if the pressure switch is going off and on like that, its because the small tubing from the impeller is clogged. Usually they clog up with rust close to impeller when they are cast iron body pump like yours. Regarding another comment earlier about them not lasting long, I live here on wet side of Big Island, Hawaii where there are thousands of catchment pumps and these Square D switches last forever as long as they don't get ants or geckos in them.
The other reason for short cycle is that there is not enough air in the pressure tank.

Pipe thread sealant is the correct name but plumbers putty is a completely different thing just a heads up great video tho 😀
So your switch is normally closed? Mine closes when energized, meaning it’s normally open.
does the tank fill up on it's own when turning back the water line?
I've had it with these Square D pressure switches I get on average 4-8 months and they go bad. Is there a equivalent switch that is a much higher quality I can use
Ants fowling contacts. Use grease to keep them out. They won’t walk through the grease. Any bearing grease will do the trick.
Did you make sure your pressure gauge was right the switch comes set at the factory. I have never seen one 12 turns off that should have increased pressure by at least 12 pounds 1 pound to a turn of the pressure switch adjustment. I think something is wrong here.
You're correct. The thing we finally figured out AFTER this video is that our pressure tank was about two feet too far away from the pump (the way we had pipes hooked up) and was the cause of the rapid cycling/destruction of contacts. Once we figured that out and fixed it, we could dial back down the pressure switch to factory settings. No troubles since.

Do these Square D pressure switches seem to have a problem? I just bought one today and it wouldn't shut off. Tried to adjust and the points were just chattering at cut on and cut off. Cleaned the points on my old unit and it works fine for now, but those points are badly burned and worn.
Good question, because we've continued to have issues with them.
@@StIsidoresFarm, I returned the Square D switch, and ordered a Centripro. But I think I got the problem fixed as far as points bounce goes. Not trying to lead you anywhere, but I made a video on the fix. If your interested, here's the link.

You used 10 gauge wire? Does that mean the pump has 30 amps to it? Is that safe?
It's always okay to use a bigger gauge than is required.
