    The wind is askew
    The air of ice
    The seagulls screech stubbornly
    The elements duel
    You keep me on course
    Don't be afraid of sinking
    Spray hits my face
I fight my way to the horizon
    For there I'll meet you
    Guide me home
    Rough endlessness
    Gone too long
    Light the fires
So that I can find you
    Climb aboard with me
    Take over the watch
    Take me through the night
    Save me through the storm
    Hold me tight
So that I can hold on
    Bring me to the end
    Don't let me go anymore
    The sky is howling
    The sea is rising
    Waves fight you back
Plunge me from valley to valley
    The forces against me
    Are ocean far away
The rain lashes from the front
    And even if it's pointless
    It shall not be
    I'll never give you up
    Take me home
    Rough endlessness
    Be gone too long
    Light the fires
    So I can find you
    Climb aboard with me
    Take over the watch
    Take me through the night
    Save me through the storm
    Hold me tight
So that I can hold on
    Bring me to the end
    Don't let me go anymore

If you listen to the album version of this song, it's his most soft song ever. Yes this song makes you want to learn German. All his songs makes you want to learn German. He is one of the most poetic songwriters in Europe that's for sure.

    • @tinisunblue

This is the moment at the concert everyone is fighting back tears of joy. I had goosebumps like never ever before in my life. The bigger the audience the more intense the goosebumps. And in Cologne "his eyes were sweating" :) or you could say he had tears of joy too.
Btw I don't think it is the softest Song ever. Listen to "Dort und hier" or "Halt mich". Or to "Deine Zeit" und "Sie", but in that Songs it is the subject that hits hard

I don't know if it helps, but here are the German lyrics:
    Land unter
    Der Wind steht schief
    Die Luft aus Eis
    Die Möwen kreischen stur
    Elemente duellieren sich
    Du hältst mich auf Kurs
    Hab keine Angst vor'm Untergehn
    Gischt schlägt ins Gesicht
Ich kämpf mich durch zum Horizont
    Denn dort treff' ich dich
    Geleite mich heim
    Rauhe Endlosigkeit
    Bist zu lange fort
    Mach die Feuer an
    Damit ich dich finden kann
    Steig zu mir an Bord
    Übernimm die Wacht
    Bring mich durch die Nacht
    Rette mich durch den Sturm
    Fass mich ganz fest an
    Das ich mich halten kann
    Bring mich zu Ende
    Lass mich nicht mehr los
    Bring mich zu Ende
    Lass mich nicht mehr los
    Der Himmel heult
    Die See geht hoch
    Wellen wehren dich
Stürzen mich von Tal zu Tal
    Die Gewalten gegen mich
    Bist du ozeanweit entfernt
    Der Regen peitscht von vorn
    Und ist auch sinnlos
    Soll's nicht sein
    Ich geb dich nie verloren
    2x:
    Geleite mich heim
    Rauhe Endlosigkeit
Bist zu lange fort (second time only: Du bist zu lange fort)
    Mach die Feuer an
    Damit ich dich finden kann
    Steig zu mir an Bord
    Übernimm die Wacht
    Bring mich durch die Nacht
    Rette mich durch den Sturm
    Fass mich ganz fest an
    Das ich mich halten kann
    Bring mich zu Ende
    Lass mich nicht mehr los
    Bring mich zu Ende
    Lass mich nicht mehr los

The term “Land unter” is difficult to translate. There are small islands (in German: Halligen) in the German tidelands that haven’t got any dikes. The houses are protected by building them on small artificial hills. About twenty times a year a storm tide floods the islands. They are covered by sea water then except for the little hills with the houses. That’s called “Land unter.” For the worst case the houses have got special, protected rooms on the upper level that will remain standing on pillars even if the whole house is swept away by the tide. There is a good YT video about “Land unter”: th-cam.com/video/udm0V9cCvqA/w-d-xo.html Thank you very much for your reactions to German musicians!

This one has a nordic coastal theme. You see it by the accordion. His wife was from the North. It's about the tides, storms, fogs of love and the desire to be held. That's why she turns on the fires in the lighthouse and he sounds the foghorn. Very Northern Country!

The reason why people say that he is hard to understand is most problably his unique singing style. Most of the times he sings clear and does not mumble or something. He defies the conventions on melodic and rhythmic singing with those staccato and long notes combined in unusual rhythmic patterns. That often leads to unusual emphasis on words and make them hard to recocnize.
There is even scientific discourse about how this is part of the reason for his big success.
However, I do love his music 😃

yeah he even sings longs notes on consonants frequently, which is against every musical theory.

The video is from a concert in Grönemeyer's home town of Bochum.
Bochum is located in what was once a huge industrial area known as the "Ruhrgebiet" and played a major role in coal mining and steel production after the war, making a decisive contribution to the German economic miracle. Text excerpt: The pit gold has brought us up again !
This song is also played every time Bochum's soccer team enters the pitch before the game and the whole stadium sings along. Pure goosebumps! - th-cam.com/video/I8o9FGrCfFg/w-d-xo.html - and from the concert in "Gelsenkirchen" with instruments and his voice - th-cam.com/video/bpGIDOBZqgMB/w-d-xo.htmlOCHUM
    Deep in the west,
    Where the sun gathers dust
    It's better
    Much better than you think
    Deep in the west
    You're no beauty
    You're grey from work
    You love yourself without make-up
    You're an honest guy
    But you're all screwed up
But that's what makes you special
You've got a pulse of steel
You can hear it loud in the night
    You're just too modest
    Your mine gold
    Has brought us up again,
You're a flower of the region
    Bochum
    I come from you
    Bochum
    I hang on you
    Good luck, Bochum
You are not a cosmopolitan city
    On your Königsallee
    There are no fashion shows
Here, where the heart still counts
    Not big money
    Who lives in Düsseldorf
You're a canopy bed for pigeons
    And you're always on coke
You've got a summerhouse in the allotment
    With a double pass
    Every opponent wet
You and your VfL (Soccer Team)

If you want to try to sing it here is the link to the official video where the words are a little bit clearer. th-cam.com/video/7fMtG7_1-pQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DVxwoqMzjxRyr6xC . I put the lyrics there, too, just search for it. And you get to see young Herbert ❤

On the subject of "you can't understand what he's singing": perhaps you can compare him in this respect to Bruce Springsteen and the pronunciation in English. Although it has to be said that Herbert is perhaps a little easier to understand. He himself says that he is not the clearest and most articulate singer on the planet. But you can see that something comes across anyway :)
