  • Glycol jacketed unitank fermenters are all the rage in the homebrewing space these days. I personally think the best cooling setup is a continuous glycol loop.
    In this video I will show you how I built my DIY setup. This setup works awesome! I'm using an extremely powerful and efficient penguin chiller. I'm also using it with Brewtools and BrewBuilt fermenters. I'm using solenoids and electric ball valves to actuate cooling. As well as a single high capacity 80 w DC variable drive pump.

    I’m jealous of your home brewing setup. Glycol would have been nice this summer with this Cali heat. 🍻

      @@blackwoodbrews The setup doesn't necessarily make the beer. It makes the beer easier though. Glycol is an all-season thing in my world 🍻

    Sweet setup! I’ve had the Blichmann chiller running pretty much nonstop for years now with no problems… hope I didn’t just jinx it!… cheers buddy! 🍻

      Thank you very much. Yeah I I know. Definitely of five or six people with early ones that had the same issues I did. It's definitely possible that they got their act together. Like I said blichmann did take good care of me. Just based on my experience as well as its power consumption compared to others, I can't recommend it. 🍻🍻

    hey Captain Bradley, well put together video thanks.
    I love that Penguin chiller but as far as I can see they only do 120 V and as far as I can see they don't do a 220V option which means pretty much USA market only, sadly.
    On the setup, I'd be slightly concerned about using PVC for glycol, especially if you are using sub zero temperatures because of embrittlement issue, though you did mention you don't go below zero, in which case you don't need glycol anyway?
    Also , I do realise you are highlighting the main glycol line manifold but do you really need such a huge ID pipe ? You mention maximising flow but you have an 80W pump and secondly most of the resistance will be in the jacketed units and the lines feeding and returning from them. Also, I like a bit of flex and turn for last minute adjustments plus flexibility to accommodate later mods so braided silicone threaded into the right sized aircon line insulation all connected up with pagoda joiners has worked pretty well for me. I agree its nice to have a tidy setup but you can achieve the same with flexible line and some creative wall fixtures.
    I wasn't quite sure what you were getting at with the venturi effect by introducing air into the glycol lines. Priming should not be an issue if you are using your chillers submersible ?

    • @PortlyGentleman
      @PortlyGentleman  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey this chiller is only available in the US I believe which is too bad. As far as PVC and getting it cold, yes maybe not ideal but I haven't had an issue yet. PVC may also be susceptible to glycol over time. Think 10 years. My system isn't designed to last this long. I won't even own this home in 10 years or if I do I won't be living in it.
      The inside the Amber of the pipe is probably a little bit large to be honest. However, the 3/4-in pipe is more rigid. And as far as air I was talking about protecting the pipes from ambient air so they don't condensate and mold.

    Great overview of your system. I definitely don't enjoy having four or so separate pumps and temperature controllers all over the place. Once I finally figure out where I want stuff to go in my brewery I may give this a shot. Cheers!

    Still run a grainfather glycol system with on/off controllers on the conical. Just set the cooling temp on the chiller 6c lower compared to the fermentation temp. Power 30W of the element is ok for a 30L unit. I hope the miniuni element will be around 60-80W max at least for the 30L unit.

    Awesome job.
    I know this video wasn't totally about it, but what do you prefer BrewBuilt X3 or the BrewTools?
    I'm on the wait list for a BrewBuilt system with there Max 4 chillier but wonder if I should switch and get a BrewTools.

    • @PortlyGentleman
      @PortlyGentleman  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That's a difficult question, especially for me!
      Honestly, I like them both. I'm assuming you're talking about unit tanks?
      Brewtools has their light version coming out eminently. So as far as price I'm pretty sure they're they're on the same level. Honestly, I think you'll be happy with either one. I am currently working on a comparison video between the two.

      @PortlyGentleman thanks I'll be looking forward to that review/video.
      I also hear spike is working on a fully jacked system. (Cone jacked as well) But won't be out for a bit .
      How about glycol chillier, it seems that you prefer the penguin chillier over the Max 4?
