The PortlyLoop My DIY Brewery Glycol Chiller loop
Glycol jacketed unitank fermenters are all the rage in the homebrewing space these days. I personally think the best cooling setup is a continuous glycol loop.
In this video I will show you how I built my DIY setup. This setup works awesome! I'm using an extremely powerful and efficient penguin chiller. I'm also using it with Brewtools and BrewBuilt fermenters. I'm using solenoids and electric ball valves to actuate cooling. As well as a single high capacity 80 w DC variable drive pump.

when money doesn't matter 😞
Still run a grainfather glycol system with on/off controllers on the conical. Just set the cooling temp on the chiller 6c lower compared to the fermentation temp. Power 30W of the element is ok for a 30L unit. I hope the miniuni element will be around 60-80W max at least for the 30L unit.
Great overview of your system. I definitely don't enjoy having four or so separate pumps and temperature controllers all over the place. Once I finally figure out where I want stuff to go in my brewery I may give this a shot. Cheers!
Thank you 🍻🍻
Thats pretty badass man, nice work.
Thank you 🍻
That is a thing of beauty!!
It definitely took some planning and some work. It was worth it though thank you 🍻
Dang!!! I’ve got no glycol system and am absolutely enthralled with your set up! It is sooo nice…now I want one! Cheers Bradley 🍻
Thank you very much my friend. It definitely makes it nice.. there are downsides condensation is something to be concerned about.
I want to see that time lapse video. I am still on the fence of ditching the two spike flex ferments for the miniuni plus.
It's something I might do... I'll be honest in 2024, almost 2025. There's no reason to buy a spike unitank...
@@PortlyGentleman Not to mention their prices on them are increasing 10% tomorrow...
Yup 🤣🍻
Your glycol system is hands down the coolest homebrew setup I’ve seen yet! Nicely done:)
Thank you very much appreciated 🍻

I have one of these, two of the eight litre kegs, as well as a four litre tinyboi. I love these kegs from Kegland a lot. With my old steel keg, I have room for three brews kegged in my little appartment. The four and eight litre kegs are perfect for short travels or parties as well! Great video, man. Cheers from Norway.
I would agree 🍻🍻
awesome review. I gotta get one of those. did you get their glycol chiller?
I do have one of their units. It's pretty good energy wise and power wise when compared to others in the same category.
I just gave up on my Duofiller G2 after 9 months because the pinch valve tubes got crusty and permanently kinked where the valve pinches them. I've seen TH-cam where other brewers have this exact problem as well. This product may be too new to have witnessed similar issues, but it's probably a good idea to leave the tube outside the valve when not in use. Unfortunately on the Duofiller, that's not convenient because the valves are internal. Anyway, I just ordered my Cannular Can Filler and am excited to put it to use.
I've heard of that as well. I think you'll be happy with your decision 🍻🍻
I received my iGulu yesterday after six or so years of waiting....I'm interested to try it out but in the meantime I've invested in a Brewolution 70 and have been doing all grain beers for the past three years in 25+L batches. The only thing I cant really brew is lagers because they typically ferment too cold for my kit but then I don't drink lager anyway. The fact that they only have three recipes available.....hmmm...but it's all DME brews so after their first kit I can buy DME and hop extract to experiment with some different recipes. I'm really not going to pay 18Bucks for 5L of dodgy lager !
I'm with you 🍻
good vid. thanks
🍻🍻
According to ChatGPT: The name "iGulu" for the beer brewing machine comes from a combination of "i" and "Gulu." The word "Gulu" means "beer" in the Zulu language, while the "i" stands for "intelligent" or "innovative." So, iGulu means "intelligent beer" or "innovative beer." It reflects the machine's aim to automate and modernize the brewing process, making it easier for homebrewers to produce quality beer.
Very interesting. Maybe next time you guys will do a little more market research 😜🍻
I was about to buy one. I own you a beer. Thanks
It's my pleasure🍻 I do try to be as genuine as possible
This is awesome but can we talk about that EasyDens holder?
Thank you 🍻 yes ?
Did you buy the holder or print it?
It's a 3D printer component. I got it years ago for review from Q305brewingsystems.com . He's also got a pretty decent Instagram page
Well that was my first distillation lesson. When I understand it better. I am sure I will be investing in my own micro still. Did you ever see that Russell Crow movie when he makes alcohol out of prickly pear cactus. Love it!
Thank you .. yes 🍻🍻
Hey.. has anyone from atf or any fed agency ever reach out to you?? I’m so confused! I’m a home brewer and have recently seen an explosion of distilling kits at my local brewery supplier, pics, videos, etc of ppl home distilling. Did I miss a new law being passed? Home distilling has been federally illegal for a long time and as far as I’ve ever known and can find on line it’s illegal just to own still equipment in my state. Is it just the government doesn’t care? Do you have a federal license? So many questions. Like if it’s just they don’t care and kinda ignoring it why would you opening broadcast to the world? Sry I’m ranting lol would love any information you have
If I was actually distilling, I would be breaking the law. But I'm not! It's all TH-cam, magic, smoke and mirrors all for fun. The loss on the books are extremely old. They mainly focus on tax revenue.
excited to see you go all grain one day <3
That's definitely on the way and more. Believe me I've been going crazy behind the scenes 🍻🍻
Water haha.. going by that hydrometer THATS SOME REALLY LITE ASS WATER YOU GOT THERE 😅😅😅😅😅
😉🍻
I think if you are doing a neutral you do stripping run in pot still mode coz its quicker then spirit run in reflux. But awesome video. i've just purchased the pro. waiting for my wash to ferment then will run it next week. I got impatient and ran wine through it but wasn't the best idea haha
I'm leaning towards that myself. The one cool thing about reflex mode. It will turn off all on its own which is convenient.
Saying you are only distilling water at the beginning is ridiculous 😜 🤡
Facts are facts... It's all just TH-cam magic, if you see me drinking anything, it's a store-bought spirit 🍻😉
Liquor is quicker!
@@biggirlollie 💯🤣🍻
Great video as usual! Where did you get your parrot?
Thank you, I got it straight from still spirits. It's also available on Amazon: amzn.to/3yddpPr
When I saw the black water, I was thinking the experiment went really Bad. Nice video btw
Lol yes 🤣😂 It's definitely something different... Thank you very much 🍻🍻
I'm likewise a fan of the Torpedo kegs but the price point of these PET's make it tempting
That's for sure. Like I mentioned sometimes they're on sale for around 27 bucks each. With a floating dip tube. Honestly they're really compelling.
How do you like the kegland ball locks?
To be honest, they're the only ones I would buy 🍻
I'm trying to decide between the B40 and the B80. Do you think the B80 could effectively scale down smaller batches like 5 or 6 gallons? Those are currently my usual batch sizes, though I often do 'bigger beers' with larger grain bills. I imagine that I will start doing larger batches in the future, so would like to avoid getting the B40 only to grow out of it in a year or two. WDYT? Also, thanks for all the great and informative videos!
I think the b80 can do that. Although if you're not going to do what regularly. It's a lot of waste and volume. What style of beers do you usually Brew? And what region are you in ?
I am kick-starting funding the new model. I don't really have much interest in kits. The attraction of this to me is that you can modify parts of the fermentation process including chilling. That makes it worthwhile for me. My intention has always been to modify and use my own recipes. I have brewed with grain for a while and so I may simply make a wort to ferment in device. I would be very interested to see a video with you modifying or using your own recipes. That's pretty much my plan. I will subscribe and I hope that you do
I fully understand your point.. I'll be honest if you're just using it for fermentation you could do the same thing with a mini fridge. And 4 L or 8L Oxerbar mini kegs.
@@PortlyGentleman You are completely correct. However, there are two factors you are ignoring. The first is that I quite like the idea of an automated process that you can pre-program to reach the right temperatures. I would like to have that degree of control over my fermentation temperature. The other and rather more important one is that I think I might just about be able to get away with a kitchen gadget like this. But there is no way that my wife is going to let me install another fridge in the house. I would just get into too much trouble even to suggest it.
I do get it. It's not like you could easily get a temperature controller that's Wi-Fi capable. And then set up automated profile steps. As far as the relatively compact footprint that one cannot be underrated. The units are about 22 in tall. And roughly have about a 13 to 15-in diameter.
@@PortlyGentleman You could but you are not married to my wife!!!!
💯 do let me know how it works out please. I'm quite curious.
Ignorant question incoming: Can you easily replace the tap handles with the custom made, name brand tap handles or the like?
@@tedbaccich2566 easy as can be. They should just screw on and screw off. There's an adjustment nut to lock them in place so they're tight at the proper angle.
@@PortlyGentleman thank you!!!👍😎🇺🇸
My pleasure! It also looks like they're on sale right now!
I'm looking at the 8 litre version of the Oxebar keg for a mini keezer that I will be building. As always the video is really informative and fun to watch.
Thank you 8 L ones are pretty good too 🍻🍻
It's a pity they're bigger in diameter than corny kegs otherwise it'd be a no brainer to use these on my series X, specially that I'd be able to see how much beer is left in the keg. Thanks for the review and have a good workout recovery, cheers!
Thank you 🤣🍻
They got rid of the cubbies. I ordered mine after I saw this video. When it arrived there was only the main piece and no cubbies. I was thinking they forgot them. So I went back and looked more closely at photos and found that Tesla inconspicuously changed their website photo without cubbies. Same price, no cubbies so now everything will slide sideways. Who knows if there was a design flaw, or they just decided to save money, or supply issue .. who knows.
The whole storage bin definitely rattles when the sub woofers make noise. Especially the little containers
Keep the workouts going your wife will thank you later!
Lol 🤣
Great content as always. Honestly I’ve got two 20L ice bar kegs. Truly interested in your glycol setup. Have you thought about doing a video? Hope you’ll consider it 🙏🏽
Thank you very much! Yeah I've got most of what I need to put together a pretty thorough video on how to set one up. Also some improvements I would make. Let's see what I can do 🍻
They told me that the new one has an electronic pressure regulator, so in the master mode you can set the fermentation pressure.
Anything's possible lot of companies right now working on that sort of thing. Evidently it's pretty hard to get right. They are also saying the kits taste amazing...
@@PortlyGentleman I know. Actually i don't care about the kits, but for 299 It could be a nice fermenting machine for experimenting with kombucha, cider, Mead ecc ecc
@@PortlyGentleman or do you have any advice in something similar that could handle hot and cold fermentation?
I hear you. You should definitely pick one up. Let me know how it works 🍻
$100 chest freezer ... If you need something smaller, a mini fridge throw a heater in either one and a temperature controller.
I’m wondering about cleaning this vessel after fermenting. How hard is it clean the trub and especially the ring that forms at the top of the fermenting beer. In my All Rounder, I reach in with a cloth to wipe away anything clinging to the sides, but with the small diameter opening of this unit…
The inside surface is extremely slippery, The aperture is also about the same size as a glass carboy maybe actually a little bit larger. Maybe. Maybe having said that I think I would also pick up an all-rounder for fermentation.
I used to hook the Ss ball to the first loop (closest to the tube), but occasionally it sucked in gas as was drawing too close to the surface. Now I just put all of mine on the 3rd loop (far end of the filter) to have it draw from lower in the beer. Never had a problem again. Not sure about the middle; I’m not a middle of the road kind of guy!
Duly noted with all the options man. What to do 🍻
Nicely done Bradley as always. A lot of good information.
Thank you David 🍻🍻🍻
How many can U fit in to a kegerator
That depends on size of it 🍻
Really cool video thanks Bradley! These kegs are definitively a good cheap option for kegging / fermenting...
Yes and thank you 🍻
For people like me who also ferment in kegs this is nice because you can see the action! I always missed that when using steel kegs. And also see whether it's clean on the inside more easily. But hey 65C water, can it really withstand that? Fermzillas start melting at like 50C
@@mrknaldhat 100%. It'll work for that. I could be over exaggerating the temperature of the water coming off the tap. It's probably closer to 40C
music way too loud, didnt finish watching

Thanks for reviewing these PET kegs. I have been looking at these for my system.
They are extremely compelling and going to be very hard to beat 🍻
Have you seen those new wifi/rapt controlled spunding valves Kegland has on their website? Haven't seen anybody talking about those but I'd be super keen to see a video on one if you can get your hands on it.
