I loved this thing, I got one for my birthday back in the 70's. It was a lot of fun and the thing went pretty high. Unfortunately I wanted it to go higher, so I replaced the small clear plastic tank with a metal one with 3-times the capacity. Armed with the upgraded fuel tank I fired it up and let it go. Go it did, up, up, up and out of site, gone forever never to be seen again. I guess it joined up with several estes rockets that met the same fate.

orange70383 I was lucky to live behind a huge field and did the exact same thing with the bigger tank and lost it as well then bought a new one and using the stock fuel tank lost it too but found it high up in a tree a few weeks later about 1/4 mile from where I launched it. Once I learned about wind direction (DUH?) I got real good at launching it then chasing it with my brand new 1978 Yamaha DT100E Enduro motorcycle and catching it as it was landing. If only we would have shot Super 8mm movies of this. My dad really got a kick out of watching me do this. Aw, the good ol' '70's! :-D

@@HappySillyFace I had a brand new Suzuki DS100 at the time, my dad brought it home one evening in the back of his Ranchero, I had no idea he was getting it and I was freaking out for a week looking at that beautiful bike. I'd been riding a Honda 50 mini-trail and now I had a peppy 2-stroke with 5-speeds. I road it endlessly. It made my childhood.

@@orange70383 How cool. My brother got a Mini-Trail 50 in 1969 and I got a CAT Eliminator mini-bike with a pull starter like on a lawn mower and being only 8 years old, I had trouble getting it started but eventually learned. We got these on his birthday, which is Christmas and he is STILL mad at our parents for making him wait until he turned 11, but they figured they should get me something too and my bike would be slower, which it was until some older neighbors bought it from me and bypassed the governor. That thing was FAST then. 🤪
As far as flying toys, I am way overdue for buying a drone and really like the 4K videos I see on TH-cam so I may have to finally get one. 🙂

Does anyone remember the Cox Flying Saucer? It was a blue plastic doughnut with a 049 engine in the middle. My first flight went up, away, then crashed right into a tree trunk. It was destroyed. The props sliced through the inner ring on impact and the braces that held the motor broke. From that point on, I had an 049 motor without anything to use it in. But, as a little boy, it was just cool having it. Those were the days.

Got one of these for Christmas one year. Dad and I were all too eager to "tune it in" outside on a really chilly Christmas day. His hands got fuel all over them and he lost his grip due to the bitter cold. We stood there and watched the copter go straight up, over our house. My sister and I started running after it when my mom called us back saying, "get your jackets on!"
We had been standing outside for who knows how long, but NOW we need jackets???!!!! Not thinking, but being good kids, we went in and grabbed our jackets. Went outside to the silent blue skies. No sound, no copter. It was lost. We lived in a pretty built-up area with houses all around. Not sure if it ever wound up in someone's yard, on a rooftop, or if someone saw it come down and picked it up. After that, we got into Cox cars. At least then we could pick up the pieces. Lol.

I received a cox plane for Christmas when I was about 11. I set it up, got it running and it almost flew a complete circle before I crashed it. That was the end of my cox plane. I never did control line again. I also spent about 20 grand on flying RC helicopters. Now I stick with drones, they fly themselves. Technology is saving me thousands!

I used to have one when I was a kid. If the engine was set a bit rich, it would hover and go with the wind, only when the fuel started to run out, it climbed , and then autorotated back down. I still have the rotor system , it now lifts a balsa gunship lookalike. If the plug was left loose (by accident), the engine worked between idle and full power, so it landed, took off, hovered, etc, That was fun, but too risky to lose the plug. I used to have all kinds of COX products, Fokker D7, the dragster, Yukon Patrol floatplane, etc, my friend had the Sopwith Camel and the Action Van, another had the Jeep, one had the Stuka, here in Finland they were popular in the seventies. I bought new ones lately from the ebay to fly them with my childhood friend who had the Camel, but he passed away, now I have Fokker D7 again, 2 Camels I planned to fly with him, Piper Grasshopper, Fokker triplane, and several balsa U-control planes with COX engines. Just no-one to fly with anymore...

Had one back in 1978. I was not satisfied with it's low altitude flights, so I replaced the small gas tank with a larger airplane tank. My friends and I launched it one day, watched it disappear into the clouds, but could still hear it running for several minutes. Never did see it again. Undisputedly, I won highest altitude award in the neighborhood.

I wanted a helicopter back in the 90's but the hobby shop kind of steered my now ex-wife away from getting a radio controlled heli due to the cost and the likelihood that I would crash. She got me one of these. I still have it out in the garage in a bin, just as it came back in the early 90's. I don't even think I ever started it. As a joke my wife got me a little Syma helicopter back in 2012. That got me started, since then I spent over 20 grand on RC helicopters, building them, flying them, crashing them and rebuilding them. I did the whole flybarless and 3D thing but most of my helicopters are now sitting in the garage in new condition covered with plastic. I still even fly the helicopter simulator from time to time. Now I'm into quads. I'm guessing I've spent around 5 or 6 thousand total on them.
It all started with this guy and I still have it!

I have the Cox Comanche version of this helicopter and half the time it flies it sputters to about maybe 100 feet up and conks out and autorotates back down. Worked great, but since it's an "Estes Cox" product, it wasn't built nearly as well as the original shown in the video. The fuselage finally split in two. I found one on eBay with a siezed engine, but a good fuselage, and I put my working motor and gear back on. Retired it and now it hangs in my hobby room.
But this video gave me an idea, I wonder if a small electric motor can be added in the tail section to counteract some of the engine torque and maybe make it fly smoother? They make drone motors that weigh only a few grams and since my chopper has the .049 motor, might be able to balance it and counter at least some of the torque.

Oh man! At 51, I'd nearly forgotten about owning a heli very similar to this about 78-9.
I cherished it so much that I would never even fly it for fear I might never see it again lol.
I guess that may have been part of the incentive to begin building / flying RC aircraft which I COULD have control over.
That was a really cool little engine tho, wish I had kept up with it.
