How To Make Fake Concrete Rocks (Part 2)

  • I have a horrible history of trying to make realistic fake rocks. My first attempt was with regular concrete and I FAILED! Concrete was sliding off the walls and making a huge (and heavy) mess. For our first escape room we ended up using monster mud, a blend of latex exterior paint and drywall joint compound. It worked, but needed constant touch-ups. When we tried Buddy Rohodes Vertical mix for our new escape room, it was love at first rock!
This is part two of my rocks tutorial - part one covers how to cut and shape foam.
See part one here: • How to Make Fake Rocks...
A few more tips and tidbits that I didn't include in the video:
    - The concrete is mixed with water and RAMP (a Buddy Rhodes product to help bind everything) The ramp should be used as soon as possible from when it was opened. We had some problems using RAMP that had been sitting for a few months. In our experience, the mix will harden more quickly and not bind as well.
    - I use half a bag of concrete at a time. This makes it easier to mix and gives me enough time to get it all on the wall before it begins to harden.
    - I recommend trying out a bag of Buddy Rhodes to see if you like it before committing to a whole project. Making an entire rock cave is a huge commitment!
    - The support staff at Buddy Rhodes is AMAZING! I feel like I was on the way to becoming fast friends with them! If in doubt, give them a call - they know their stuff.
    - measuring stuff is time consuming. For the liquids, I measured once and then marked off the volume on a container. That way I had to fill to the line each time and not measure again.
    - The mix is somewhat flexible on consistency. Follow the instructions but know that you can go a little harder or softer depending on what you need.
    Hope this helps! Rock on!

How many bags of the vertical mix did you end up using?

Oh wow! Great question. I didn't keep track, but it was A LOT (this was for an entire room). I'm thinking 17+. I was doing small bits at a time and buying as I went to keep from having too much extra. The fluid you mix with it does have a shortish shelf life so we never bought more of that than what we could use quickly.
