    I really like your way of making these tutorials. You don't say that "my way is the best" and so on. As you say at 2:00 "this is my way and hopefully you can learn from it". Being 67 I still have a lot to learn and videos like this is so interesting to follow and there is always new ideas to grab. Greetings from Norway!

    Most informative video I've found to date on editing mily way images. I'm a massive fan of AW, but Mike explains several different techniques of achieving similar results in a simple but unpatronising way.
    As a newbie, I'm uncertain if my processing skills are to blame for failing to capture Pro "colourful" milky way images, but I now see it is mostly because I am not in dark enough skies.
    Most helpful vid, keep up the good work, and hope for clear skies.

      Thanks so much Daren! You've hit the nail on the head there...by far the best way to get great astrophotography images is to find darker locations where you can see more of the night sky!

    Wonderful video, Mike. You are greatly talented. I have been wanting to at least try a Milky Way picture at some point this Summer. I am in the middle of the rainy season though. Once it ends I plan to hike a mountain and try to get away from the city lights. Stay safe.

      Thanks so much dude. It really is a great little technique isn't it! It works much better on some images than others but great to know about.
      That image was deep into the desert here in the UAE. It's great as it's one of the few roads without lights on it and it's nice and straight.
      We're good...playing the waiting game for borders to open now...then we're moving countries!! So from September, the content will probably be in a more lush, green environment. 😁
      I hope all is good with you guys. 👍

      Thanks Mark! and thanks for the suggestion...halos are a nightmare at the best of time...the best way I've found is to take a series of shots with bracketing and then either picking the ones with the lower exposure or blending them. 👍

    Any recommendation on how to spot the comet NEOWISE ? :) I'm not sure if from Singapore it's visible. I guess Dubai would be similar ?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Laurent,
      It looks like we wont have much luck. We've had very dusty skies here recently and it is only visible at about 4am, just before the dawn light starts to bleach it out. We have one more day before it disappears from our skies here in the middle east.
      I found this info "Comet NEOWISE is best viewed between 4 and 4:15 a.m. low in the northeastern sky. Venus is due East and should act as a reference point as the comet will be at about the same height. It's currently in the constellation Auriga, its brighter star Capella will also be in the northeast, above the location of the comet."
      So in theory, if you use skyview or stellarium, you can use this info, find venus, and if it is in your sky, you can then see if it will be there before the day breaks.
      I hope that helps. 👍

    • @laurentc.8952
      @laurentc.8952 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikesphotography Hi Mike ! Thank you for the reply. I found the perfect solution. The new Stellarium+ mobile app has the comet loaded in (maybe an idea for a next video?) in Singapore is during the evening time but over the past few day it was really cloudy and really near to the horizon, so i guess it will be quite hard here as well.

    Thanks--I do a lot of Milky Way shots, and I you have brought out several points that I found very helpful--I like your strategy with the whites, blacks, highlights, and also the tip on boosting sharpness then masking it, and being quite moderate with the luminance. I agree with you that applying clarity with a local brush can make the photo look unnnatural, but I find that works pretty well when I use a soft brush, around 35% flow and go easy on it. It can really make a difference. Also, I find that dehaze works well on MW shots. You don't use it? Thanks again--nice clear video, and I have found your flash tutorials most helpful also.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Neil! Great to hear some of the tips helped. I probably should have used the dehaze on the last image to get it to pop a little more. I'll have to try the local adjustments you suggested to see if they work for me and my editing...and that's the great thing with all of these tools we have...lots of different ways to get a great image.
      Thanks for your thoughts!! 😁👍

    Out of curiosity, can I leave it on auto iso while in manual mode to speed things up a bit?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. As it's so dark, your camera will probably ramp up the iso more than you need, making it a lot more noisy than you'd want it to be.

  • @paulm8157
    @paulm8157 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    “Stellar” post, Mike. (Pun intended). Good you had ample supply of “round to its”. 😁 WB tip super technique - useable elsewhere? By sharpening before noise reduction, aren’t you “sharpening” noise? Thought it was good practice to reduce noise first.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha! Always delivering the puns!! 😁 Thanks Paul.
      The main thing with sharpening is the mask. In refining the mask, this will reduce the amount of noise you sharpen. 😁👍

    Hi, I really like your channel, its simple and straight forward. Ive just recently started using Lightroom cc, when I previously used lr 3. Cc is more challenging to use. It doesn't import pictures in order of capture, so I cant put a pano together as everything has been messed up on adobe, I need help big time

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There should be a tag where you can get them in different orders...and one of them should be to put them in chronological order.
      Go into your library module, and then in the bottom right hand corner of the main viewer, it should have a little triangle you can click on for your view modes. Make sure you're in the multiple image library view (where you can see lots of slides in this main viewer), click on this triangle and make sure sorting is checked. Now it should have "sort" in the bottom of the main viewer. click on the little up/down arrow next to this and select "capture time" ... now it should be in the right order for you. 👍

    My lens correction has no Samyang entry. Can I install it somehow?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Trevor,
      It does seem as though Adobe have removed Samyang from the list.
      The best thing to do is to take a photograph of a grid, or something with straight lines in it. Then in lightroom, adjust it manually until all the lines are as straight as you can get them, and the vignette has been lessened. Then save it as a preset.
      Before I broke my samyang, this is what I did and it worked quite well.
      I am looking to do some more astrophotography soon, so I might have to do a video on this very subject.
      Thanks for watching 👍

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries...it all comes down to your personal preference. I don't mind editing as it brings out the best in the shot...after all...when the camera produces an image, there are certain things it will add to it, like sharpening, colour changes, etc. before giving you the jpeg.
      Also...if you shoot a long exposure, this would be like adding more light than you can see with the naked eye...🤔...and if you edit it too much, just call it art!! 😆😆😆
      Thanks for watching and commenting Luis, much appreciated! 😁👍
