Yeah the edges tend to chip from general wear-and-tear but if you either don't care or don't mind switching it out every so often it's great.
I personally use a matte film screen protector (Which I get for about £1 for a pack of 5) on top of a tempered glass one to try and protect the edges as well as reduce glare and fingerprints.
I'd use the cheapest one in combination with a good case, something foam based maybe. I've had a lot of luck with that combination on my old iPod Touch 4G. I had a Nerf case, and I kid you not, that iPod succeeded in hip height and head height drop tests without even getting scratched for two reasons. The first reason is because the case near the screen was a little higher than the level of the screen, so it kept the screen from hitting the ground. Second, if it had gotten scratched, it would have been the protector and not the actual screen.

This is why you need a decent case combined with a glass screen protector. Impacts against the corners or edges of your phone will destroy the screen, no matter what screen protector you use. The screen protector is more useful for preventing scratches to your main screen, as well as limited protection against direct screen impacts (which should be very rare if you have a decent case that has a lip on the front).

@@setalight7290 If the asphalt isn't flat enough, it can still hit the screen directly. So yes, I'd avoid dropping it on asphalt, but it'll still help greatly against corner or back impacts. Face impacts could still hit the ground directly due to asphalt's roughness.

Because the edges of the iPhone have curves, making a screen protector to curve with the edges would compromise its integrity and is very expensive to produce. So they only cover the flat portion.

I use a thick case with a good around the screen lip on my phone, and I use the cheap glass protectors. The case absorbs drops pretty well. My phone is exposed to a lot of dirt so the scratch resistance and feel of the glass is nice.

I purchased a tempered glass screen protector on eBay and it cost me £2.95. I've only had it on my phone for two weeks but throughout that time the screen protector has went above and beyond to serve it's purpose. I've lost count on how many times I've dropped my phone, it hit against a hard surface or my nephew's have roughly handled it. Despite all that the screen protector is as crystal clear and as new as the day it came. Not a scratch, crack or break in sight. I'll definitely be purchasing this screen protector in the future again. I'm actually surprised this one has lasted as long as it did considering all it's been put through. My cousin on the other hand purchased a screen protector from O2 and it cost him £24.99. He dropped his phone and the screen protector broke. His screen protector only lasted three days because it broke the first time he dropped his phone and yet my £2.95 is still going strong despite all the shit I've put it through.

So I have not officially used a screen protector of any kind since I got my iPhone 7 in 2016. I used that until I got my 8 in 2018, and again I have no screen protector installed.
The phones are mint, not a single scratch to be found on either one of them. I take really good care of my phones so I dont need one, but it seems to shock a lot of people when I show them my phone and they realize I have no protector lol. I never, under any circumstances however, put my phone in my pocket. I use clean hands only when operating device. This explains why it's mint, when I'm doing something that requires me to put my phone in my pocket, I use alternative phone instead

A simple screen protector is fine on mid range price for protecting from scratches if you wanna protect ur phone get a good case that will really help you more
The problem is that the screen protector would have protected the screen if it has a case on the phone. A good phone case protects from shock and the screen protector is really for protecting against scratches. With a good case on the phone, the screen protector might get cracked in the fall, but the the screen under it would be fine.

I use the cheap ones.. sometimes they break when I drop it. Sometimes they don't. Either way, they've always done their job and at $7/3, a pack or two over a phone's life isn't a big deal.

2 plastic screen protectors do not help at all if the phone falls on an edge (and as we seen they do nothing if the phone falls flat too)
3 a screen protector SHOULD break to "extinguish" the energy, if it does not absorbe damage it wont protect the screen, wich will get the full damage
4 10€ screen protectors (for a pack of 2-3) its the best price tag, if you want something better buy a bigass cover with incorporated glass (like in 2012 lmao)

A case is much better than a screen protector. The screen protector is only for scratches, it won’t protect your screen from a drop
