Holden regularly punched above its weight but was let down by executive management and direction from GM

Wow I never knew Holden made such a video. It would have cost a bomb to make. Thanks for sharing, I will be checking out your other videos in the future. P.S I too had a VH, an SL optioned with the 202 and auto.

Beautiful looking car. I've heard of the Holden Commodore, because I'm not from Australia, I've never seen one in person.

The first model combined the Opel Commodore's body with the front clip from the Senator. Engine, trans and rear axle were all Holden.

@@JBofBrisbane Okay. I've always preferred GMH cars of Australia over our Chevys, Pontiac and Buicks of the USA.

You weren't missing out on much they should have stuck with the Kingswood the model before it was a real car.

Parents bought a '82 SL/X same year I was born. As young as 6 years old I remember the thing overheating, throwing head gaskets and transmissions on road trips. Great nostalgia but it was a gigantic piece of shit. Not to mention with the blue 202 you would need a kilometre of open road to overtake anyone.

This was the last Commodore to have chrome steel bumpers and those metal door handles felt great. Quite a roomy and comfortable car, my father had a 1983 yellow station wagon (SL). Pretty basic though, 2.6L six, AM only radio, no passenger door mirror!

What really dates this video is the use of Laserdisc.

Although not perfect, it's still easy to see what you're watching and listen and understand what the announcer is saying.

I don't know how people could complain about these models being too 'small'. They had plenty of space inside. It would have been larger than anything from the HK , back.
I bought a VB model 202 Trimatic......and remember that appalling am only radio. I chose not to sell my old HG Kingswood until the VB had proven itself. After i got used to the new car and was happy with it, the Kingswood went up for sale. But the trimatic in the VB was a piece of crap. The air conditioning system was also inadequate for local conditions.
The consensus now is that the best looking of the first gen Commodore was the VH S/LE, inside and out. I'd have to agree.

Sadly GMH (Holden) no longer exists as a company. Thankfully, I still have a 2002 VY Berlina wagon- all original in pretty good condition- to keep the Australian built car dream alive. To some extent anyway! Thanks for the upload, even though I'm 5 years late lol

It looks so much like the Opel Senator !!

    • @SCREAMILLUSION
      @SCREAMILLUSION 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The body is loosely designed upon the Rekord and the front end upon the Senator, Opel then took this hybrid of designs Holden was planning and made their Commodore C, which is a misconception that ours was based upon that car when in fact it was that car made by copying Holden!!!

The Starfire 4 remained on sale in NZ through to VK...even though the Tech 4 was being exported from Adelaide by that time. The development cost of the 1963 Red Motor was amortised over, and over many times.

I was thinking that they didn't mention power steering as a standard fitment in the SL/E,or was that optional ?
In the SL & SL/X , they seem to list the 2.85 litre (173 cubic inch) engines as a standard fitment in them,we have found that engine gave better fuel consumption than the 202 engine in our old HQ Kingswood.
My brother has inherited my late grandfathers 1983 model VH Commodore, I think it's an SL with the 4 speed manual,I think it has air conditioning but no power steering & blue the 173 cubic inch engine,it is still all original but the kilometres are unknown apparently because the odometer stopped at 329,000 kilometres, the engine probably just needs a reseal because it doesn't burn oil & runs good,it's just a leaker & all of the pollution stuff on the exhaust has been cut off & silver soldered up,maybe they couldn't be bothered replacing the EGR valve, maybe that's faulty because that has had a blanking plate fitted onto the inlet manifold where the exhaust pipe side is supposed to heat it up.
It would need the vacuum lines put back in as well as the air cleaner heater pipe to pass a blue slip inspection with that engine,it depends on if your best mate is a mechanic who was bodgy or not !!!!
Holden seem to push the 173 engine as a standard option for some reason, maybe aside from the fuel consumption issue, there's bugger all difference in power, rather torque between the 173 & the 202 which was probably Holdens attempt to build a six which was better suited for towing as it had more torque, which is why they weren't optioned with the Borg Warner 5 speed transmission which the 173 powered car was as they were mainly for 4 cylinder cars such as the Mitsubishi Sigma.
I'm not sure what people are playing at, it's like half of the Holdens saying they are pulling out of the Australia as far as manufacturing goes whereas the other half such as myself say they're staying, I haven't had a job for nearly the last 6 years as if they wonder why I would never go to or get onto that one of vars (German) that's actually a Ford !!!!
What, do they think I'm mentally deficient ????

Russell Booth you finally got a reply!! Your brothers VH could be put back on the road with new gaskets and maybe a new rear seal if needed.
Hopefully the car has dry storage for now.
The panel between the rear window and boot lid was where they rotted first. GMH guaranteed the body for 5 years back in the day. I once had a VH SL 202 auto. T’was a good reliable unit. Got traded for an HZ wagon when I had my first born arrive in 1990.
Hardly see the old Commodores around anymore.

Should have V8 engines mentioned. SLE with 5.0litr would be good find. SS even more desirable if you can find one.

Other than SS, the V8 wasn't standard with any model.

in 2019 vh sle are worth a bomb now if your able to find one in good condition they are becoming very scarce these days I've seen em go for as high as $60,000 unfortunately they weren't looked as back in the day as toranas and Monaros that's why there is so few around people didn't look after them when they had em it's changed tho over the years people who have them now do and they are a popular car these days the youth of today love em and the bad ones are getting restored parts are quiet easy to come by if you no were to look the sle chrome nos are hard to get tho this was a good video I didn't like the interior of this sle dark blue was the best I think
