Thank you, going to install my new gear shift handler tomorrow, your video really helped me figure out that I didn’t have to pay for the mechanic to come install the new one. Saved me $$$$ and gave me knowledge. Again thank you!
Just wanted to say thanks. I got stuck in a parking lot and found your video on my phone. I would have never figured out how to remove the shift lever without your help. I found that once the lever was removed, I could shift and drive the vehicle - I just had to be careful not to inadvertently shift from drive to reverse since the lever that prevents that was now removed. I just got the replacement part today and installed it with no problem. Total cost for part and shipping was about $95. If I would have had to get it towed and have the dealer make the repair, I'm sure I would have been out $500 bucks or more (not to mention the hassle). I really appreciate you taking the time to put this together and post it.
For anyone that has this problem in the future, I was able to pull the shift knob in the opposite direction then push it back in normally and things were working again. I did not need to take the entire shifter out of the center console. The issue i had was my xc70 not shifting out of park.
TexasCoder....way to go! I am so glad you took the time to shoot and post this video, single-handed at that! My wife's 2004 XC90 was stuck in park at our local high school. Thanks to your video, it is now back home and I'll be purchasing a new shifter handle tomorrow! Another happy TH-cam follower. Thanks again!
Wow!!! I had this problem today after coming back from lunch, pulled in to park and it wouldn't go past Neutral... I work at a Car dealership so I wasn't overly concerned about getting home but was hoping it wasn't the Transmission. Anyways, I called one of my Techs out to look at it and he thought it was the neutral safety switch but wasn't sure. I got on google and found your video, after watching you take yours apart I went out to the XC90 and did what you showed and it fixed it. I will have to order the new shifter but at least it is driveable... Thanks so much for your help!!!
Brilliant help I got stuck in car park in middle of Hong Kong and looked up your clip while there, worked a treat got home without calling tow wagon or dealership. Thanks for your help.
Thanks for this video - was stuck this evening with this exact same problem on my wife's 2005 xc70. In my case however the plastic trigger broke completely and the actuator pin fell out. Watching this video helped me figure out the fix. Saved me much $. Thanks again!!
Thanks because a month ago it happened to my 2005 xc90 and the out of town shop I took it to said I needed a new shift actuator. I drove it broken to my local mechanic and he took apart and found change inside and said that was the problem. However, today it happened again! Since it's the weekend I took to a new shop and waiting to hear back. A couple months ago that same plastic piece fell out of my shifter! I'm going to call the place and let them know.
I've a 2004 V70, same thing, stuck in Drive/Neutral pointing in the WRONG DIRECTION.. ~:-/ Got it home and ran your vid, which gave me the push to go and have a look. Turns out that the plunger in the gear knob had disconnected.. re-connected and my mother has an brother called Robert. There is probably something broken.. and it will probably do it again.. but it's a quick and easy (5mins) fix. Thanks for taking the trouble to post this vid.. very much appreciated.
I was laying in bed and the wife whent to move her truck at 6 in the morning and was explaining to me the truck wouldn't go pass netral, all I saw was $ signs, thank God for guys like you and TH-cam so we can teach each other to avoid some of those pricey repair shops that charge on fear and not the problem itself, I must say all is great and working, thanks and keep posting
This happened to my 2004 xc90 about 6 years ago. Ended up just cutting about a 3 inch piece of bike inner tube and using a little soapy water on the inside of so I could pull it over the end of the shifter(think like a condom:) ) with the broken plastic knob depressed in the shifting position. Haven't had a problem since, except for needing to change out the tire covering since it started to tear a bit after about 5 years. Actually doesn't look bad at all on it and feels like a racing shifter. Costs nothing and you don't have to mess with pulling the shifter out. Just another option.
Thanks, this has just happened to our 2005 XC90, The same small plastic part fell out when I removed the gear shifter. I wouldn't have attempted to repair it myself if I hadn't seen your posting Thanks again you have saved me a fortune as British Volvo shop rates are crazy. Peter
Hello there, texascoder! Earlier today, my mother-in-laws 06 Volvo wouldn't go into park or reverse and the key couldn't come out of the ignition. We struggled for a while attempting to strong arm the shifter, but it wouldn't budge. I also tried calling the Volvo dealership, but it's after hours and no one could offer a solution. But then I turned to the Internet and low and behold I came across your video. I followed it step by step and I was able to put it in park and remove the key. You save
On mine the button broke but now that I saw how that comes apart, I hope that I can get it into park. Off to E Bay and order another shifter. Mine is an 06 with just about 200,000 miles and the plastic bits are starting to become brittle. I will check back after I get the part. I was kind of hoping there would be a manual override, but no such luck. Thanks for the video.
@@ItchyKneeSon Wellllllllll. It did it again and I put in another shifter and still no go. After watching a few videos, I found one young lady who had the same problem and she showed how to partially disassemble the shifter cover and on the drivers side is a small white tab that you push down and it releases until you put it in park again. I haven't had time to dig to far into it because the weather has been crappy so I am using my winter beater Buick LaCross (I didn't realize how low a regular car sits as I am so used to the Volvo) but the weather is finally supposed to get warmer (I am in BFE Montana). I am thinking along the lines of an electrical issue because the shift lever button works, but I need to go through the service manual to see if it offers a clue.
Texas Coder, I've just experienced this same problem of not being able to shift above Neutral, hence, not being able to remove my key from the ignition. Many thanks for the helpful video tutorial! It certainly has assisted in my diagnosis of the problem. I think I am going to tackle this one myself. My husband may have to assist me a little bit but then again maybe he wont...
Thanks alot for sharing 🙌 I got that plastic trigger button in the knob broken today. I'm gonna replace the same as you did. I'm based in Dubai, so gotta look if I can still find it since it's 2010 model 😉. Again appreciate the level of details in your video. Kudos to that! 💯
Me pasó lo mismo se quebró el que aaciona la palanca de cambios o el candado pero si lo pude moverle que activa es como un perrito lo fije en un guía que trae le puse Kola loca y funcionó ahora hay que comprar la pieza
Just wanted to say thanks for the video. I thought that I might have a transmission problem but I did notice the shift button was giving me trouble as well. Followed your instructions and got my shift button unstuck. Great video, saved me a ton of money!
So I pulled into the parking spot, and pushed the shifter forward, and a 2 inch stainless pin popped out on the console. I tried to put it in drive and couldnt. I did find a vid on how to take the knob off so I could look at it.After 45 minutes of playing with it I got it all back together and it worked The pin swiveled between the trigger and back of the knob, holding the cable in place. And thank goodness I had my Swiss army with me. The trigger part actual pulls out so you can put the pin back in correctly and it works. I didnt swap the part,I fixed the trigger.
Great video man! Thank you so much for going into that level of detail. My wife’s car just got that problem and your video gave me the certification I needed :-)
Thank you, going to install my new gear shift handler tomorrow, your video really helped me figure out that I didn’t have to pay for the mechanic to come install the new one. Saved me $$$$ and gave me knowledge. Again thank you!
Thank you for making this video, you helped me to troubleshoot he problem and fix it. Very much appreciate your time, you saved me a lot of money.. thanks again
The thing comes out at 12:00 These are about all the same on the S60 V70 S80 XC70 Xc90 from these years - as long as the release button is the same size, they all should be interchangeable . Cheap to grab one from Ebay/junkyard (but sure not easy to pull out indeed)
Thanks for video. Helped a lot on a successful button change. Also nice to see the parts when you’re working things out so I don’t feel like I’m the only one.
Thank you for making this video. That exact thing just happened with our 2007 xc90 & your video helped us figure that out. Once the knob is off our gear shift works fine.We have the new knob on order.
Thanks so much for making this video, I wanted to change out the shifter knob on my S80 because the wood grain or fake wood grain had cracked. But couldn't find out anywhere how to get the knob off. Thanks again
@1402pete That is awesome, thank you for watching and for the comment! I am glad you were able to repair your Volvo and the video helped! Have a great day!
Thanks so much for this. Had exactly the same problem on our XC90. Your video diagnosed it and I got it sorted super easy. Went for £12.99 lever button off eBay, easy fitment and works perfectly. Thanks again, saved a ton of time and money.
Hey Texascoder: many thanks for your video on replacing the Volvo XC 90 shift. It's been extremely helpful to me to solve this problem......cheap plastic parts that don't hold up. Just don't want to spend the ridiculous rates that the dealers charge. I want to get it right the first time......Many thanks KB in So Carolina
Helped me thanks, however apron refitting the plastic ring inside the leather gaiter fell off and straight into the cavity. While the gear stick works, it wobbles a lot and can get pulled out easily.
Also: The boot will cause same problem, before shifting to park pull boot up and shifter will go past park to signal key release. If that works for you and you forget, restart shift gears then pull the boot up etc etc . John
This was great video. I have similar problem, but mine might be a little more intense. I was driving my 2002 s60t today, I had it on drive, and then quickly put it into tiptronic (but forced it in) to down shift. It felt like something broke. Right after I couldn't put my gear back to drive, it continued to drops into the tiptronic area into first gear. Its loose as if nothing is locking in it. I got home forced the gear into park. I then took off the cover halfway, as I'm struggling to take it fully off and leather knob. I start messing with it, and now I get it into park, reverse, neutral, but drive continues to drops to fist gear ( with no control or resistance). I notice there was some iron wire thingy loose or jamed, I continue messed with it and it felt like it worked, but some how it didn't lock, continue to mess with it and it got loose, now i pulled out this big strong sturdy iron wire (looks like a small short suspension thing that bent straight, in a circle and bends out). I pulled it out as I didn't want it to drop in and get jammed some where else. It seems like there is another one in there controlling the automatic functions. Please send me any thought or suggestion, I'm sure it can be fixed, it just get in there.
@backwoodsctryboy Thank you man! I really lucked out, and it was a mechanical issue, and not an electrical one. Good call on the ETCG forum, I posted it to the repair forum so others can have access to it. I planned on doing that last night, but after this video started uploading, I went to bed :-)
@xChikox Thanks man! What did the dealer end up doing to fix yours? I freaked out too when it happened, and thought, well I am either going to have the dealer fix it, or break it more fixing it myself. Luckily, it worked out to where I found the problem and was able to fix it myself. Thanks for the comment and watching!
In my case I had a 2008 Volvo S60 Turbo that wouldn't shift out of park and something seemed to physicaly prevent the shifter from returning to park. (it would freely shift down even without using brake but the shift indicator would stay on park) I had to pull off the cover and shift lever today and found my issue to be that the internal shift rod was disconnected (it's something deep inside that the whole mechanism pulls back and forth so not the part you interact with). It should be an easy spot. It connects up to it near the top so you can see it once you get the shift lever pulled off and the veneer cover pulled out. It's super annoying to get that thing to come off so I can easy access to it. So after I pulled the top off and discovered that the shift rod thing was disconnected. I popped it back on and now everything works. :D Not sure how it came off as it seems stuck on there well enough. Maybe it was shifted too hard into park and the rod popped off. At least I know where to go if it happens again. :D
@TheTexasCoder im not even quite sure how they did it all i got was a bill for it haha all they told me was that the shifter had ceased up for some reason! no problem for the comment, always looking forward to what new fix it project you come up with!
This is happening right now to me. Out of the blue. I have a block behind my tire. Break lights come on. No difficulty shifting prior and have had no other symptoms. So my prob is an obstruction or plunger button is broke?! Same probs as you. Identical situation. I am fairly ignorant in auto mechanics 🧰! So thanks for this
Weird how that happened, this happened to me the other day in the XC90! but thanks for the tips, i ended up getting the dealer to come out and check it out and bring the car to the dealership but it kinds scared me when it happened haha good video though!
This really sounds and seemed "stupid" from Volvo. Why all at a sudden so many things are going wrong with the Volvo? Shift stuck, Shift cap lock, indicator stuck, shift module rubbish......What a bad make of a car called Volvo? Good luck to you if your next car is also a Volvos and thank you to the helpers uploading videos explaining how to remedy or repair the never-ending disabling problems which should have been the job of Volvo, Sweden! Or at least these can be in Volvo manual but none there. All they say is their cars are so perfect but in actual fact is the complete opposite. Sort these problems, Volvo.
That's right. Volvo is the crappiest car I've ever owned, make funny noise and brake down everywhere. I can say makes more trouble than Chrysler or Kia. However it's strongest and safest car in the accident.
Great Video. Helped me get my car into park. I have to order that part. When installing new shifter knob, what gear should the car be in? The Video didn't explain that. Thanks
@heidihouston Thank you for watching and for the comment! Our Volvos are wonderfully engineered vehicles. 9 out of 10 times you will get a Service Notification message if something electrical goes wrong. With your first shop visit, if you did not have a message, then the first shop has diagnosed the issue incorrectly. I would be willing to guess that you are experiencing the same problem I did. Let me know how it turns out, and thanks again for the comment.
So you just push the new lever down in the channel?? Then do the ring and apron?? My button just broke in half and I taped it together it I need to replace it. Do I have to buy Volvo brand?? Thanks.
Love the video Sir! Just got the Gear Shift Lever and trying to install now. Running into issues putting the ring clip back on. Any tips to do this efficiently?
Hi Great Info Just a quick question : Did you have to have the selector in Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive before taking out the Shifter or does it not matter ? regards Pete
I'm dying here. did you get the shift knob off and fix the eternally condemned plastic trigger. Mines been broken for years. I just squeeze the heck out of it when it jams and it works. Sure would like to fix it.
Thank you for the comment and for watching! That is awesome you were able to get it situated! It certainly sounds like the same situation I had, and you can certainly fix it yourself! Keep me updated and let me know if replacing your shifter solved the problem. Thanks again for the comment, and I am glad the video helped!
i know its only been 8 years ago lol but do you know that part number ? jfyi your info is still being used , and your still helping someone so thanks ..
Hi again, we have our new gear shift but want to know exactly how you put it in. Do we have to pull up the whole console or can we just place it in the shaft? If so, do we tap it in place or push down hard? We don't want to break the new shifter. Thanks!
@pinhoja No bother at all, thank you for the comment and for watching. For your situation, it would be best to have a mechanic inspect the shifter and vehicle. It's hard to guess at what could be causing your issue. The safest thing to do, have a mechanic diagnose the problem. Post back what you find, I am interest in knowing the cause and fix. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
my s60 was stuck in park..i took the console off and sprayed electric cleaner..nope..brake lights came on..yes..seems to be a problem with the shifter itself..i bang the top and it works, so ill probably replace that
its winter mode I believe, you press it when its too slippery or hard to drive out and you start off in 2nd gear. but you would want to not keep it in too many times or it'll mess with the transmission
Hi, I have an XC90, and the shift gear is stock in manual position, I do not see that the knob is broken. At this moment I have my suv in may parking and took off the battery. I recently changed the ABS system due to the abs problem message. Could it be that the gear stick is loose?
Sorry to bother you although my gearbox once it gets to the driving position it does not remain there and it slides immediately to manual. Do you have any ideas - please!
Way too long. Go watch the other video that's 38 seconds. This guy makes it look way more difficult than it is. Sorry for throwing shade, but c'mon man. 40 min video for a job you can do in under a min.
my volsvwagen car got the gear locked up ? when i turn on the car i can't move yje gear to D or N but when i turn off the car i can move it from P to N to D ,,,,?????? any answer please
So I'm having the same issue. My question is, mine only seems to do it when it is really cold. Warms up and it shifts. What are the chances the shifter knob lever breaks (little plastic piece falls out or whatever is being described) when it's pulled off? You'd think if it was broke, it wouldn't be an intermittent problem but just not shift...it seems as if I jiggle the cable that goes to a small green circuit board in clear sight, it corrects and shifts. Hard to tell. I don't want to yank the shifter off only to break it in the process. When I push in the lever on the shifter knob to shift, should I feel some kind of mechanical click or pressure? When I push it in there is no resistance or sound that it's doing anything. If it were broke, would it still shift on occasion?. I appreciate your video, time and help. You've saved a lot of people, a lot of money. Kudos for that bro! Good karma is a great thing. Keep it up. If you could email me any answers or advice, I'd be forever grateful. More than I already am! Thank in advance, you Rock. gratefuphanz at gmail.com
Just yesterday I had same issue- stuck in Drive or Neutral only. Local dealer parts guy and service guy scared me into having it towed to them for diagnosis and repair because they said it could be a couple different problems and since there is no returns on electrical items(one suggested possible problem was the park safety neutral switch on the Trans for $200) I had them fix it and it was the shift knob! But now dealer says i need shift lock solenoid? anyone know how/where located to replace?
@SLOROB55 Thanks for the comment and for watching! Yes, this did fix my issue, and it has held up nicely. Let me know how your fix goes, and thanks again for the comment!
Super, helped in a time of panic! Two questions...my 2005 XC70 is stuck in park, can the shift lever be pulled out while in park? I ask because the metal guide along the indicator panel is narrow while in park and widens out in neutral. Second, when installing the new shift lever, do I simply shove it into place?
great help!!! whew the top part of shift gear actually cracked and fell off and I was like STUCK!!! then I google and found yr video.. THANKS!!! was able to switch off; park and get the key out; tried to yank out the gear stick (SO I REPLACE NEW ONE) but still cant manage to do so - HOW did you get it out ??? - I don't want to use brute strength ---- PSE HELP..
@SovetskieSoldat Thanks for watching and for the comment! To be honest, I do not have the DVD setup in my XC90 and I am not sure how you would turn yours off. In your situation, the best thing to do would be to take it to your mechanic and have them diagnose the issue. When you do get it fixed, post a comment and let us know how it turned off.
I appreciate the video and dont want to sound ungrateful but that video was about 36 mins way to long. Gear shifter broke get a new one is all I need to hear/see.
Thank’s, so greatful! I work at Volvo Cars in Gothenburg Sweden, so it’s it’s a bit funny that a Texan saved my day :-)

thanks for the vid!!! just happened to my wive's 05 xc90!!! ordering a new shifter!
(Quick summary) Just change the shift knob. Shift knob button malfunctioned. Your welcome.

Thanks for the great Video! Realy Helpfull. I didnt buy a new knob though, but repaired the old one with 2 component glue.
thanks for the video insight into removing shift knob.. after watching i just put a tyrap under boot ring so there was no need to remove trim
thats fricken cool...quick diagnosis.....this would be an awesome post to the etcg forum!

John
thanks this was the problem with my 2005 V70
You made me look like a Superhero, glad you posted, Thanks
(it would freely shift down even without using brake but the shift indicator would stay on park)
I had to pull off the cover and shift lever today and found my issue to be that the internal shift rod was disconnected (it's something deep inside that the whole mechanism pulls back and forth so not the part you interact with).
Not sure how it came off as it seems stuck on there well enough. Maybe it was shifted too hard into park and the rod popped off. At least I know where to go if it happens again. :D
Thanks.... That fixed my problem.
@TheTexasCoder im not even quite sure how they did it all i got was a bill for it haha all they told me was that the shifter had ceased up for some reason! no problem for the comment, always looking forward to what new fix it project you come up with!
👍Thanks man! Excellent instructions. Worked out great.
Hi Great Info
Just a quick question :
Did you have to have the selector in Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive before taking out the Shifter or does it not matter ?
regards Pete
It did not matter. You just have to pull REALLY HARD and steady... just don't have your face close to it, I learned that the hard way. 😐
Hi thanks have removed and replaced now with new.
Hi Nice video have the Same. Only That its gett to Park and neutrale. Dont schift into drive. Will try Tomorrow a new shiftknop. 😂hope it works lol
Do you know how to uninstall that sterio? Or how to imput an AUX port?
Thanks again for watching and commenting!
my s60 was stuck in park..i took the console off and sprayed electric cleaner..nope..brake lights came on..yes..seems to be a problem with the shifter itself..i bang the top and it works, so ill probably replace that
What does the "w" stand for on the lower right? How does it work?
its winter mode I believe, you press it when its too slippery or hard to drive out and you start off in 2nd gear. but you would want to not keep it in too many times or it'll mess with the transmission
Hi, I have an XC90, and the shift gear is stock in manual position, I do not see that the knob is broken. At this moment I have my suv in may parking and took off the battery. I recently changed the ABS system due to the abs problem message. Could it be that the gear stick is loose?
Should be a recall item don’t you think?
Worked like a charm - thanks!
Sorry to bother you although my gearbox once it gets to the driving position it does not remain there and it slides immediately to manual. Do you have any ideas - please!
Thanks it has worked
Just looking for any help, honda is telling me my car is needing $1600 in repairs to replace the throttle body and computer to fix the same issue!!!
Way too long. Go watch the other video that's 38 seconds. This guy makes it look way more difficult than it is.
Sorry for throwing shade, but c'mon man. 40 min video for a job you can do in under a min.
No kiddin. It's like people have never heard of editing.
Where
my volsvwagen car got the gear locked up ? when i turn on the car i can't move yje gear to D or N but when i turn off the car i can move it from P to N to D ,,,,?????? any answer please
@mamurao Thank you, I am glad you liked it!
hi... I have a 99 toyota camry,,, Everytime i shift the shifter from the parking to the reverse it is hard ...Is it a transmission problem
Hey can you tell me how to turn off the DVD? It doesn't have a turn off button and it drains my battery.

Hey friend it's me purple this is my new channel
I need help w s60 shifter replacement
Super, helped in a time of panic! Two questions...my 2005 XC70 is stuck in park, can the shift lever be pulled out while in park? I ask because the metal guide along the indicator panel is narrow while in park and widens out in neutral. Second, when installing the new shift lever, do I simply shove it into place?
great help!!! whew the top part of shift gear actually cracked and
fell off and I was like STUCK!!! then I google and found yr video..
THANKS!!! was able to switch off; park and get the key out;
tried to yank out the gear stick (SO I REPLACE NEW ONE)
but still cant manage to do so - HOW did you get it out ???
- I don't want to use brute strength ---- PSE HELP..
awesome video !!!
Please I need the link to the 38 sec video recommended by Adrian Gilmore. Please help me.
Thanks for the most unhelpful video ever
Thank you
@SovetskieSoldat Thanks for watching and for the comment! To be honest, I do not have the DVD setup in my XC90 and I am not sure how you would turn yours off. In your situation, the best thing to do would be to take it to your mechanic and have them diagnose the issue. When you do get it fixed, post a comment and let us know how it turned off.
❤️👍🏼👍🏼
you just broke the whole car. I ain't doing this
Can’t see anything
Getting motion sickness
This car is not for me thanks for the video
I appreciate the video and dont want to sound ungrateful but that video was about 36 mins way to long. Gear shifter broke get a new one is all I need to hear/see.
+Sky Rostova I'm not the only one that feels this way...troll get a life
Your intentions were good, but learn to edit. Way, way too long.!!!!!
Holy mackeral what a long video that could be done in 5 minutes. Make a script on what you did, and edit the unecessary banter.
