You just saved us from a costly repair! We were displaced by hurricane Michael in Panama city, our car is our only asset and means of employment. Our shifter started acting up today and we were at a loss. My wife suggested looking up TH-cam videos for a fix and your video saved us! Thank you thank you thank you!
Good video. I added key lube to that actuator spring on the red part and it has worked flawlessly. The spring was full of gunk so I cleaned it and lubed it up. It has worked for the last 50 shifts key removals
ATTENTION EVERYBODY! Give this a shot that "button " slot thing you guys see her moving .. put some wd 40 on it and on the brake switch itself too .. you can find that switch right where the brake pad is add some wd40 i tried this on my volvo and it worked like a champ .. hasnt shut off on me since .. i think this issue only happens in cold temperatures!! Let me know if this works for yall.
You saved me. The Volvo dealership was LOST on how to engage the override. They changed the solenoid and relieved me of $450 and guess what? Same problem. I will live with it for now and consider it an additional safety measure
Volvos TRULY ARE PIECES OF SHIT...GARBAGE...JUNK....PILES OF SHIT....over complicated. Junk....TRASH...I hope the cheap wanna be who sold me this pile of heartaches sees this.. Truly srcond rate, actually third rate unreliable shit boxes of cars....NEVER....EVER....EVER....NEVER...EVER....never buy a piece of pure toilet paper volvo....truly accursed ugly, UNreliable piles of pure SHIT... Xc 70......MOST ACCURSED pile of vomit ever conceived. ...the best volvo is one Driven off a cliff....
Thank you so much. After so many failed attempts and useless videos, i finally ran across yours!! This worked so fast! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!
Thank you so much my darlin'!! You are the greatest! I knew there was a way to bypass it when it happens but your video is so straight forward. All I needed was a pocket knife & your video. I was back on the road in less than 3 mins! XOXOXO
Great job - and thank you very much (all the way from Australia😁). Your advice enabled me to get the car out of the driveway so I could take another car.
Check brake lites, if not lighting up, check fuse, (same fuse as shift lock) if yes, move drivers seat all the way back & front up, use a dime or regular screwdriver on a lock tab on the side console cover, rotate left quarter turn, pull out & move back to remove cover. Release tab to move shift out if park.
Excellent tip !!! do not need it right now, just go my 2003 xc90 but in case needed will try to remember this or look it up !!! how long did you look to find this ???
This works!!!!! thank you. update though when I went to put my car back in park my key would not shift all the way in order to take it out, the little white button lever that you pushed down to get the car out of park has to be pushed back up in order to finish turning the key to shut the car off and fully put the car back in park. at least for me. hope this helps someone too. after this the car would go out of park and turn on and shut off just fine.
Thanks I had this with another volvo and forgot what I did last time.... I guess it happens over time to most volvos....like the tear on drivers seat...LOL
My stuck shifter was caused by the spring loaded button (at the top of the knob itself) being broken (cracked inside where the pin engages the long rod that goes down into the assembly to release the selector to change gears). I got a new button repair kit and fixed for good. See this video th-cam.com/video/8GU5hpj8Yn8/w-d-xo.html

Thanx you! I was trying all this with the engine running. You are the only one that mentioned to have the car off with the key in the ignition!!!
You've always had to wait for it to work up before I could drive thank you so much. It fixed the ignition situation also.
this absolutely worked for the short term, but does anyone know a permanent fix for this?

So after you push the button down then start car and can ur the gear?
